For Bluetooth-first portable listening, the JBL Flip 7 is the strongest all-round alternative identified by TechRadar. Choose the Bose SoundLink Max for a larger premium speaker, or the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 and Edifier ES20 when compact size matters. None of these is established as a drop-in replacement for Cove P1’s Wi-Fi-based whole-home system.
What the JBL Cove P1 actually is
JBL presents Cove as a whole-home audio family, with the Cove P1 serving as its portable model. The P1 accepts both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth input, works with the JBL One app and other Cove and Bar MK2 devices, and can be paired with another P1 for stereo playback. Those features put it in a different category from a simple Bluetooth speaker. You can use it away from home, but its defining advantage is that it can participate in a connected JBL listening system.

JBL’s Cove P1 product page claims up to 14 hours of playback, IP56 water and dust resistance, and Dolby Atmos Music support. The same page lists a 120 W RMS output, a 3.0.1-channel system, and a 50 Hz–20 kHz frequency response measured at -6 dB. These are listed manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of loudness, bass extension or sound quality. The product page also says USB playback is available in US and Central American versions, so that input should not be assumed for every regional model.

The wider JBL whole-home audio information explains the ecosystem positioning. If you only want to stream from a phone over Bluetooth, much of what makes Cove different may be unnecessary. If you already use compatible JBL equipment and want the P1 to join it, a rugged Bluetooth-only speaker will solve a different problem.

TechRadar’s roundup, updated October 9, 2026, names Flip 7 its best all-rounder Bluetooth speaker, SoundLink Max its best premium Bluetooth speaker, and discusses Wonderboom 4 and ES20 as compact choices. Those labels and sound comparisons are the publication’s editorial judgments, not tests performed for this article. Product prices, stock and regional specifications change, so verify them before buying.
1. JBL Flip 7: the simplest Bluetooth-first replacement
Choose Flip 7 when your definition of portable listening is straightforward: carry a speaker, connect a phone or tablet over Bluetooth, and use it outdoors without treating Wi-Fi or whole-home grouping as essential. JBL describes Flip 7 as portable, waterproof and drop-proof in its Bluetooth speaker catalog. TechRadar’s October 9, 2026 roundup calls it the best all-rounder Bluetooth speaker for most people.
This is the closest alternative in use case, not necessarily in architecture. The P1 is explicitly a Wi-Fi-and-Bluetooth product inside JBL’s whole-home platform. The evidence cited for Flip 7 establishes a rugged Bluetooth role, but does not establish Wi-Fi streaming, JBL One app integration, compatibility with Cove or Bar MK2 devices, or stereo grouping with a Cove P1. Treating Flip 7 as a replacement for those functions would overstate what is documented.
Why Flip 7 makes sense
- You primarily play music from a phone, tablet or computer over Bluetooth.
- You want a speaker designed for portable, wet or rougher use rather than a home-only networked setup.
- You prefer a familiar JBL portable format and do not need the P1’s whole-home controls.
- You want the broadest, least complicated recommendation among the alternatives covered here.
When not to choose it
- Your requirement is Wi-Fi playback from compatible services or control through JBL’s whole-home system.
- You need the P1’s documented Dolby Atmos Music support, 3.0.1-channel specification or USB input where that regional feature is offered.
- You are replacing a Cove P1 that is already grouped with other Cove or Bar MK2 devices and expect the new speaker to join that group.
2. Bose SoundLink Max: the larger premium comparison
SoundLink Max is the option to consider when portability still matters but you are willing to carry a substantially larger speaker for a higher-end Bluetooth presentation. TechRadar lists Bluetooth 5.3, up to 20 hours of battery life, IP67 protection and a weight of 4.7 lb (2.1 kg), and identifies it as the best premium Bluetooth speaker in the roundup.
The weight is the key trade-off. At 2.1 kg, SoundLink Max is portable in the sense that it can be moved between rooms, taken to a destination or carried with planning, but it is not the same type of grab-and-go object as a compact speaker. Its IP67 listing also represents a different stated protection level from Cove P1’s IP56. An IP code describes resistance under specified test conditions; it does not tell you that either speaker is indestructible, suitable for submersion beyond its rating, or immune to charging-port damage.
Choose SoundLink Max when
- You want the longest stated battery figure among the products with a number in the cited comparison: 20 hours.
- You value a larger premium Bluetooth speaker and can accept 2.1 kg of weight.
- You want IP67 listed protection and do not need Cove’s Wi-Fi or JBL whole-home integration.
Look elsewhere when
- You regularly carry the speaker over long distances, where 4.7 lb becomes the dominant inconvenience.
- Your listening system depends on Wi-Fi, JBL One or grouping with Cove and Bar MK2 products.
- You are choosing solely from battery numbers. Runtime depends on volume, content, wireless conditions and other use variables, so the 20-hour figure is a listed claim rather than a guarantee for every session.
3. Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4: compact with more bass weight
Wonderboom 4 is aimed at readers who want a genuinely compact speaker and prefer a fuller low-end character. In TechRadar’s comparison, Wonderboom 4 has more bass weight than the Edifier ES20. The roundup lists both compact models as IP67-rated.

That sound description is comparative, not an objective promise that Wonderboom 4 will sound better in every room or at every volume. Bass perception changes with placement, nearby surfaces, listening distance and the type of music being played. The practical advantage is size: Wonderboom 4 belongs in the compact category rather than competing directly with the larger Cove P1 or SoundLink Max on scale.
Wonderboom 4 is the better fit for
- Travel, small rooms, kitchens, desks and casual outdoor listening where a small enclosure is an advantage.
- Listeners who prefer a more bass-weighted balance among the compact options discussed by TechRadar.
- People who want IP67 listed protection but do not need Wi-Fi multiroom features.
It is not established as a substitute for Cove P1’s Wi-Fi streaming, JBL One app control, Dolby Atmos Music support, stereo pairing within the Cove family or the P1’s listed 120 W RMS and 3.0.1-channel design.
4. Edifier ES20: compact with more midrange definition
Edifier ES20 is the other compact choice in TechRadar’s comparison. The publication describes it as offering greater midrange definition and tonal accuracy than Wonderboom 4 in its reviewer’s comparison, while listing both as IP67-rated.
Choose ES20 if voices, acoustic instruments and the center of a mix matter more to you than a bass-forward presentation. As with any listening judgment, the result depends on program material and placement. The description is useful for choosing between these two compact speakers, but it should not be presented as a universal laboratory ranking.
ES20 is a sensible choice for
- Podcasts, dialogue-heavy video and music where vocal clarity is a priority.
- Listeners who want a compact, IP67-listed speaker and do not need a larger premium enclosure.
- Buyers who are comparing the two compact models on tonal balance rather than ecosystem features.
ES20 remains a Bluetooth-oriented compact alternative in the evidence available here. There is no documented basis for saying it joins JBL’s whole-home system or reproduces Cove P1’s Wi-Fi functions.

Connectivity is the decision that matters most
Start with the source of your music, not the wattage printed on a box. Cove P1 explicitly combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and is designed to work with other JBL whole-home devices. A Bluetooth-only alternative can be excellent for personal listening while still being the wrong purchase for a networked house.
Rank #3
- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
- Write down the sources you actually use. If every session starts with a phone nearby, Bluetooth may be enough. If you want the speaker to pull music over your home network, note that as a non-negotiable requirement.
- Decide whether grouping matters. Cove P1 can work with other Cove and Bar MK2 devices through JBL’s ecosystem. If synchronized rooms are part of your routine, exclude products whose ecosystem compatibility is not documented.
- Separate replacement from supplement. A Flip 7, Wonderboom 4 or ES20 can supplement an existing Cove system for travel, but the cited information does not show that any of them can replace the P1 inside that system.
- Check regional features. The P1 page specifically limits its USB playback note to US and Central American versions. Confirm the exact model page for your country before relying on an input or specification.
Portability, protection and physical scale
Portable does not mean one thing. A speaker can be portable because it has a handle, because it fits in a bag, or simply because it is not permanently installed. Compare the format you will carry with the environment where you will use it.
| Priority | Most suitable direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest practical footprint | Wonderboom 4 or ES20 | TechRadar treats both as compact options and lists IP67 protection. |
| Premium speaker that can still move between locations | SoundLink Max | It offers the largest stated battery figure here but weighs 2.1 kg. |
| Portable Bluetooth use with a rugged JBL positioning | Flip 7 | JBL describes it as waterproof and drop-proof; TechRadar rates it the all-rounder choice. |
| Portable use plus networked home audio | Cove P1 | It is the only model in this comparison explicitly documented with Wi-Fi and JBL whole-home compatibility. |
Protection ratings should be read as boundaries, not marketing shorthand for unlimited outdoor use. Cove P1 is listed at IP56, while SoundLink Max, Wonderboom 4 and ES20 are listed at IP67 in the cited material. The numbers indicate different test categories for dust and water resistance; they do not establish identical durability in drops, heat, sand, salt water or repeated exposure.
Battery claims: compare the conditions, not just the number
JBL claims up to 14 hours for Cove P1. TechRadar lists 20 hours for SoundLink Max. The other alternatives in the cited material do not have a battery figure that can be compared responsibly here. Up to figures are best treated as ceiling estimates under the manufacturer’s or publication’s stated test conditions, not as a promise that every listener will obtain that runtime.

Volume is especially important. A speaker used near maximum output generally consumes more power than one used for background listening. Wireless signal conditions, content with heavy bass, voice-assistant activity if present, temperature and battery age can also affect a session. When battery life is central to your decision, look for the full test methodology and charging behavior for the exact regional model rather than ranking products by a single headline number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sound and wattage: why 120 W does not settle the comparison
Cove P1’s product page lists 120 W RMS and a 3.0.1-channel system. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s stated design, but they do not by themselves predict how loud or satisfying a speaker will sound in your room. JBL’s comparison guidance explains that wattage alone does not determine perceived loudness; placement, room size and background noise also matter. See the JBL Bluetooth speaker comparison guidance for that context.
Use the numbers as one part of a decision:
- RMS output: a listed electrical specification, not a universal loudness score across brands.
- Channel configuration: P1’s 3.0.1 description indicates a more elaborate listed speaker layout than a small single-enclosure portable model, but it does not guarantee a particular soundstage in every placement.
- Frequency response: P1’s listed 50 Hz–20 kHz range is measured at -6 dB. The tolerance matters; a range without its measurement condition can be misleading.
- Listening judgments: TechRadar’s bass-weight and midrange-definition comments are useful for choosing between Wonderboom 4 and ES20, but they remain reviewer assessments rather than universal measurements.
For an outdoor purchase, also consider how far you will stand from the speaker and how much ambient noise you face. A compact model that sounds balanced indoors may need a different volume level outside, while a larger model may be harder to carry to the location where you actually listen.

A practical buying process
- Confirm the reference product. Make sure you mean Cove P1, the portable Cove model. Its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, JBL One and whole-home features are the baseline against which alternatives should be judged.
- Mark Wi-Fi as required or optional. If required, none of the alternatives above is documented as a full Cove-system replacement. If optional, continue to Bluetooth-first models.
- Set a carrying limit. If 2.1 kg is acceptable, SoundLink Max becomes viable. If you need a small bag-friendly speaker, compare Wonderboom 4 and ES20 first.
- Choose the sound priority. Pick Wonderboom 4 for the bass-weighted comparison described by TechRadar, ES20 for its stated midrange definition and tonal accuracy, or a larger model when scale matters more than minimum size.
- Check protection for the actual environment. Compare the listed IP ratings, then consider rain, dust, poolside use, salt water and drop risk separately. Do not assume an IP rating covers every hazard.
- Verify the exact regional listing. Confirm inputs, wireless features, included accessories, battery claims and dimensions on the product page for your market. P1’s USB playback note is already region-specific.
- Check current price and stock immediately before ordering. Prices, discounts and availability are volatile, and the cited specifications may vary by region or revision.
- Use the return period intelligently. Test the speaker in the room and at the outdoor distance where you will use it. Listen at realistic volume instead of judging only from a short maximum-volume demonstration.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming every portable JBL speaker joins Cove
The JBL name does not establish compatibility with the Cove whole-home system. The available evidence specifically documents P1’s relationship with JBL One, Cove and Bar MK2 devices; it does not document that relationship for Flip 7.
Using IP67 as a reason to ignore size
IP67 may look better on a specification sheet than IP56, but a heavier speaker can be less useful if it stays at home because carrying it is inconvenient. Match protection and physical format to the places you actually visit.
Treating battery claims as laboratory rankings
Only SoundLink Max and Cove P1 have a battery number in the cited comparison, and the figures come from different sources. Do not infer that the unlisted products have shorter or longer runtime.
Choosing by wattage alone
Output power is not a cross-brand loudness scale. Room size, placement, background noise and the speaker’s acoustic design all affect what you hear.
Ignoring regional editions
USB playback on P1 is specifically identified for US and Central American versions. Other inputs, colors, bundled accessories and availability can also differ by market, so check the local product page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFinal recommendations by listener
- Most people who only need Bluetooth: JBL Flip 7, because TechRadar identifies it as the best all-rounder and JBL positions it as waterproof and drop-proof. Treat it as a Bluetooth alternative, not a documented Cove-system replacement.
- Best premium, larger-format option: Bose SoundLink Max, if 2.1 kg is acceptable and the listed 20-hour battery claim and IP67 rating matter more than compactness.
- Best compact bass-oriented option: Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4, based on TechRadar’s comparison describing greater bass weight.
- Best compact clarity-oriented option: Edifier ES20, based on TechRadar’s comparison describing greater midrange definition and tonal accuracy.
- Best choice when Wi-Fi whole-home audio is essential: Keep the comparison anchored on Cove P1 itself. None of the alternatives covered here is documented as reproducing its Wi-Fi, JBL One and Cove/Bar MK2 integration.
The right alternative depends less on a single sound or power number than on whether you need a networked home speaker or a straightforward portable Bluetooth device. Decide that first, then weigh size, protection, battery claims and sound priorities against the conditions in which you will actually listen.
