For clear iPhone video sound, choose the recording mode for the playback and editing you want—not because one mode guarantees clearer speech. Open Settings > Camera > Record Sound and select Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono if your iPhone offers those options. On iPhone 16 or later, Spatial Audio is the default; earlier iPhone models record in Stereo, according to Apple’s iPhone User Guide. For noisy or windy scenes, keep in mind that Apple’s automatic wind-noise reduction applies to Spatial Audio or Stereo video on iPhone 16 or later.
Choose the recording mode for how you want the video to sound
The modes change the way audio is recorded and played back. Apple does not describe any of them as universally clearer for dialogue, so the best choice depends on your intended playback and editing workflow.

| Mode | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Spatial Audio | Creates immersive playback from all directions on supported playback devices. | Choose it for immersive playback or if you want to use Audio Mix in Photos on a supported recording. |
| Stereo | Separates sound between the left and right channels; multiple iPhone microphones capture stereo sound. | Choose it when you want left/right separation or your editing workflow calls for conventional stereo. |
| Mono | Plays the same audio in both ears. | Choose it when identical playback in both ears suits your project. |
These descriptions concern the recording and playback format, not a promise of better speech intelligibility. If a speaker sounds distant or is hard to hear, changing modes alone may not address the cause.

What iPhone wind-noise reduction does—and does not do
Apple says that on iPhone 16 or later, wind noise is automatically reduced when video is recorded in Spatial Audio or Stereo. The feature is not described as eliminating wind, and Apple’s statement does not establish that the same behavior applies to earlier iPhone models. Apple’s guide says you can turn off Wind Noise Reduction to change that setting.

When to use an external microphone
If the speaker is far from the phone, a microphone closer to that person can be a more relevant solution than switching between Mono, Stereo, and Spatial Audio. Apple confirms that supported models of AirPods and AirPods Pro can serve as a microphone when recording video in supported camera apps. Check that your AirPods model and camera app support the feature before relying on it; availability is not universal.

Adjust supported Spatial Audio recordings in Photos
For supported Spatial Audio recordings, Photos offers Audio Mix options after capture. Apple documents these effects:
- Standard: plays the original recorded audio.
- In-Frame: reduces sounds and voices from sources not visible in the frame.
- Studio: reduces background sounds and reverb to make the audio sound more like a studio recording.
- Cinematic: places voices on a front-facing track and leaves environmental noises in surround.
You can adjust the effect and background-noise levels in Photos. Audio Mix is an editing option, not a guarantee that processing will fix audio that was captured poorly. See Apple’s instructions for editing audio in Photos for supported recordings and controls.
