What Free includes—and what its limits mean
Free includes web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, GPT discovery and use, image creation, and 500 MB of Library storage, according to OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ. OpenAI says everyday text chat is unlimited subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. That does not mean unlimited access to every model or tool.

Tools have their own limits. File uploads, image generation, voice, and data analysis can each become unavailable when their respective allowance is reached. GPT use follows the account’s model limit; when that limit is reached, use pauses until it resets. These separate allowances matter if your typical session depends on a particular tool rather than ordinary text chat.
When Plus is the right personal plan
OpenAI lists Plus at $20 per month in its September 9, 2026 ChatGPT Release Notes. The same notes describe it as “best for steady, day-to-day use.” OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says Plus has higher rate limits than Free, but that does not establish a fixed allowance for every model or feature.

Plus is a reasonable choice if you use ChatGPT regularly and Free’s limits interrupt work often enough to justify a recurring fee. Check the feature and model access shown for your own account: plan names do not guarantee identical access across models, regions, or rollouts.

OpenAI describes Pro as designed for people who rely on AI for high-stakes, complex work in its About ChatGPT Pro tiers guidance. Its September 9, 2026 release notes list Pro at $100 and $200 per month; they describe the $100 tier as built for longer, high-intensity Codex sessions and say it offers higher usage than Plus.

Pro is for people whose heavy use or particular advanced workflows make the higher cost worthwhile. It is not a purchase of unlimited access to every advanced model. OpenAI’s current model and limits guidance describes model-specific allowances, including weekly or shared allowances depending on tier. ChatGPT may display a reset time, and another model may remain available after an allowance is reached. ChatGPT Work and Codex allowances are separate, so check the current plan details and in-product limits for the work you actually do.
As of September 10, 2026, OpenAI said new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200 were paused, while existing subscriptions were unaffected by that announcement. This is a dated status, not a guarantee of future availability; confirm the purchase option shown to you.

When to choose Business, Enterprise, or Edu
Individual subscriptions and organization plans solve different problems. Business, Enterprise, and Edu add a managed workspace, where administrators can govern access and, depending on the plan, usage. A team should compare administration and spending controls as well as model access.
Business: a centrally managed team workspace
Business uses per-seat limits for advanced features. A workspace may also purchase credits shared across users, which can be used after included per-seat usage is exhausted. The optional pool and commercial terms depend on the plan and workspace setup. OpenAI explains the mechanics in its flexible pricing guidance.

Enterprise: organization controls and contract terms
Enterprise is aimed at organizations needing enterprise-grade security and privacy, administrative controls, and eligible models and native tools. Access is still subject to workspace model permissions. OpenAI’s Enterprise model access guidance explains that a plan name alone does not guarantee every employee sees every model.
Edu: university deployments
Edu is a university plan. Like Enterprise, it uses shared contract-level credits under OpenAI’s flexible pricing guidance, with usage and controls determined by the institutional arrangement. Universities should confirm pricing, included usage, and access with OpenAI under their agreement.
How to compare limits and model access
There is no single usage cap that describes every ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI says limits depend on plan, model, and—on managed workspaces—workspace settings. The model-and-limits guidance may show a reset time, and the product may make another model available when one allowance is exhausted. Treat the limits shown in your account as the relevant current information rather than relying on a number from an older plan description.

A practical way to choose

- Choose Plus for regular personal use. Compare its current account-specific model and tool access with what you need, rather than assuming every allowance is fixed.
- Consider Pro for sustained, heavier work. Check the relevant model, ChatGPT Work, or Codex allowance and current tier availability before committing to the higher monthly cost.
- Choose an organization plan for administration. Compare workspace permissions, included usage, credit arrangements, and contract terms with your administrator or OpenAI sales contact.
- Recheck before purchase. Pricing, feature rollout, limits, and availability can change; consult OpenAI’s current pricing information and the settings shown in your account or workspace.
