The safest all-purpose setup in Over the Hill is a recovery-minded explorer loadout: keep the always-available winch, then select a portable anchor, wooden planks, a repair kit and a portable camp. Add tool slots early, and spend your first 125 Pebbles on first-level tires, suspension, protection, winch and tool-slot upgrades. This combination keeps a vehicle recoverable, improves grip and clearance, and gives you enough flexibility to stay away from cabins without turning every mistake into a failed run.
What to carry on a normal exploration or resource run
Start with five functions rather than five specific items: recovery, crossing or traction, vehicle repair, route flexibility and resupply. The winch covers basic recovery and is always present in the inventory, so it should be your default solution whenever a usable tree or another vehicle is available. The selected tools fill the gaps that the winch cannot.

| Inventory choice | Job it performs | Why it belongs in the baseline kit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winch | Pulls the vehicle toward a tree or another vehicle | It is always available, so every run has a basic recovery method | It needs a suitable anchor point or another vehicle |
| Portable anchor | Creates an anchor where a normal tree is not usable | Extends recovery coverage in open or awkward terrain | It is a selectable, limited-use tool that replenishes at a campsite |
| Two wooden planks | Bridges short gaps or add traction under a vehicle | Useful for small crossings and situations where wheels cannot find grip | The supply is limited for the outing and replenishes at a campsite |
| Repair kit | Restores vehicle condition in the field | Protects a long run from ending because of accumulated damage | It is limited-use and must be replenished at a campsite |
| Portable camp | Provides a resupply point away from a cabin | Lets a long route carry its own recovery and repair reset | It is a selected tool, so taking it means giving up another utility slot |
| One flexible utility slot | Adapts to the route, such as a car jack or another situational tool | Keeps the loadout useful when the map objective is unusual | Exact carry limits and replenishment timers have not been published |
For most outings, select the portable anchor, planks, repair kit and portable camp in addition to the standard winch. If the trip is short and close to a cabin, replace the camp with a route-specific utility item. If the trip is long, the camp is usually worth more than a rarely needed specialist tool because limited-use items replenish when you visit a campsite.
Why recovery comes before speed
A resource run fails when the vehicle is immobilized, not when it takes a few extra seconds to climb a hill. The recovery guide for Over the Hill documents winching to a tree or another vehicle, and using a portable anchor or jack when the normal approach is unavailable. If recovery still cannot be completed, the practical fallback is to return to a cabin or merchant.

Use the winch first
Try a tree or a co-op vehicle before consuming a limited-use item. A stable anchor and a controlled pull can free the vehicle without reducing the supplies you need later in the route. In co-op, a teammate’s vehicle can serve as the anchor, giving the group a second recovery option without spending an anchor charge.
Spend the portable anchor on coverage, not convenience
Carry the anchor for stretches where trees are absent, badly positioned or inaccessible. It is most valuable after you have committed to a route that cannot quickly return to a cabin. Because it is limited-use, avoid deploying it for a minor alignment problem that a different approach can solve.
Reserve the jack for a genuine immobilization
The car jack is listed among the selectable tools, but the available documentation does not establish a universal quantity, exact activation conditions or a timer. Treat it as a specialist recovery option when your route makes a conventional winch or anchor unreliable, rather than assuming it replaces either one.
The 125-Pebble upgrade baseline
The community database’s “Recovery-minded explorer” recipe costs 125 Pebbles and includes first-level tires, suspension, protection, winch and tool slots. It is explicitly an editorial starting point, not a playtested universal best build. Use it as a purchase order for a new vehicle, then adjust after you learn which terrain and run lengths you actually choose.
| Upgrade area | What it improves | Why it is early priority | How to evaluate the next level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tires | Grip on wet, steep or loose surfaces | More grip reduces wheel spin and lowers the chance of needing a recovery tool | Choose another level when the vehicle repeatedly loses traction on your regular routes |
| Suspension | Clearance and ability to negotiate uneven ground | Clearance prevents terrain from becoming a hard stop | Upgrade when rocks, ruts or broken ground are contacting the vehicle before the wheels can climb through |
| Protection | Resistance to damage during rough travel | Preserves vehicle condition when a route cannot be driven cleanly | Add it before cosmetic spending if damage is forcing early returns |
| Winch | Recovery capability | Recovery is the insurance that turns a difficult line into a recoverable mistake | Prioritize it while you are still learning map approaches or driving alone |
| Tool slots | Number of selected field utilities | More slots let you carry recovery, repair and route tools at the same time | Increase slots when you are leaving one essential tool behind to fit another |
Do not read the 125-Pebble recipe as a claim that every vehicle, map or play style has the same optimum. The database reports 21 vehicles, 42 wildlife entries, 16 upgrades, 197 cosmetics and five areas, but those are community-database orientation figures rather than developer-published statistics. The breadth of the content makes a flexible baseline more useful than a rigid “best” build.

Choose the loadout for the route
General exploration and resource collection
- Keep the winch as the default recovery method.
- Select a portable anchor for tree-free or awkward sections.
- Take the two wooden planks for short gaps and traction problems.
- Carry a repair kit so accumulated damage does not force a premature return.
- Use the remaining slot for a portable camp on long routes, or a specialist utility item on a short loop.
- Increase tool slots early so recovery equipment is not sacrificed for a collection tool.
This is the closest thing to a universal setup because it covers the most common failure modes without depending on a particular area.
Steep, wet or rocky terrain
- Prioritize tires before extra engine power when wheel slip is the recurring problem.
- Prioritize suspension when the vehicle is grounding on rocks, ruts or abrupt transitions.
- Keep protection ahead of cosmetic upgrades if impacts are draining vehicle condition.
- Carry the anchor and planks even when the route looks short; difficult terrain can turn a small detour into a recovery problem.
- Use the repair kit after a damaging section rather than waiting until the vehicle is nearly unusable.
Extra engine power cannot compensate for a vehicle that cannot maintain contact with the surface or clear an obstacle. The practical order is grip, clearance and protection, with recovery tools available throughout.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Long routes away from cabins
- Take the portable camp instead of relying on a distant cabin.
- Carry the repair kit because a return trip doubles the distance exposed to damage.
- Keep both the portable anchor and planks unless the route has clearly documented alternatives.
- Plan a campsite stop before the inventory is depleted; limited-use tools replenish there.
- Leave room in the tool selection for the objective’s utility item only after recovery coverage is secure.
The camp is not merely a convenience on a remote run. It changes the route’s resupply distance and lets you replenish limited-use tools before the return leg.
Photography or collection outings
These trips often need more utility equipment than a simple drive. Add tool slots early so you can carry photography or collection tools without removing the anchor, repair kit or planks. If the route stays near a cabin, omit the portable camp; if it crosses a remote area, keep the camp and add slots rather than dropping recovery coverage.
Co-op expeditions
Over the Hill supports online co-op for up to four players, and vehicles can winch to one another. Divide responsibilities instead of giving every player an identical inventory:

| Player role | Suggested emphasis | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lead explorer | Winch, anchor, planks and tires or suspension | Handles route finding and first contact with difficult terrain |
| Recovery specialist | Anchor, jack, repair kit and protection | Maintains a second recovery chain when the lead vehicle is stuck |
| Photographer or collector | Extra tool slots and objective-specific utilities | Preserves the group’s recovery equipment while carrying mission tools |
| Support driver | Portable camp, repair kit and a flexible utility slot | Provides a mobile resupply plan and a second vehicle for winching |
Coordinate before entering the map so the party does not spend every slot on the same low-use item. At least one vehicle should retain an anchor and repair capability, and the group should know which vehicle will act as the winch target when a climb fails.
A practical pre-departure checklist
- Identify the route’s resupply distance. Mark whether the run stays near a cabin, reaches a merchant, or requires a campsite stop. The farther the route is from a reset point, the more valuable the camp and repair kit become.
- Classify the terrain. Steep, wet and rocky routes call for tires, suspension and protection before power or cosmetics. A flatter route can devote more capacity to objective tools.
- Confirm recovery coverage. The winch is automatic inventory; verify that a portable anchor is selected if trees may be missing or unusable, and add a jack when the route has known immobilization risks.
- Reserve traction help. Take the two wooden planks when the route contains short gaps, soft approaches or places where a small amount of extra traction can avoid a recovery.
- Pack vehicle protection. Select the repair kit for any outing where returning immediately would be costly or impractical.
- Decide whether the camp earns a slot. On long or branching routes, take it. On a short loop with a nearby cabin, convert that slot to a route-specific tool.
- Check tool-slot capacity. If the objective requires a utility item that would displace recovery equipment, buy an additional tool slot before leaving.
- Set a turnaround rule. Decide in advance whether you will return to the last cabin or campsite after using a key tool, taking major damage or losing the planned route. This prevents a salvageable setback from becoming an unrecoverable one.
How to recover a stuck vehicle without wasting the run
1. Stop applying throttle
Wheel spin can deepen the problem and use time without changing the vehicle’s position. Pause, inspect the nearest solid anchor and choose a recovery line before trying again.
2. Try a tree or another vehicle with the winch
The winch is the no-cost first attempt. In co-op, have a teammate position a vehicle where the pull changes the angle rather than simply dragging straight backward.
3. Change the line before spending a limited-use tool
If the first pull fails, reposition the vehicle or the supporting vehicle when possible. A better angle can solve a problem that looks like a lack of power.
4. Deploy the portable anchor or jack when the normal anchor is unavailable
Use the portable anchor for a missing or unsuitable tree. Use the jack when the vehicle’s position requires that specialist recovery method. Because both are selected, limited-use tools, spend them only after simpler options are exhausted.

5. Use planks for a short gap or traction problem
Planks are not a replacement for a recovery line. Place them where they can help the wheels cross a small break or regain traction, then drive with controlled inputs rather than trying to brute-force the obstacle.
6. Repair before the return leg
If the vehicle has taken damage, use the repair kit before committing to more difficult terrain. A damaged vehicle has less margin for the next mistake, and a remote return exposes it to additional hazards.
7. Abort to a cabin or merchant when recovery is not completing
The recovery guide identifies returning to a cabin or merchant as the fallback when the vehicle cannot be recovered in place. Treat that option as part of the plan, not as a failure: the point of a recovery-minded inventory is to preserve the run whenever possible and retreat before the vehicle becomes a permanent obstacle.

Buy tool slots when objectives compete with survival
Tool slots are the most direct way to add capability without removing recovery coverage. They become especially valuable for photography and collection outings, where a utility item may otherwise displace the repair kit or anchor. The community recipe includes tool slots at first level for this reason.

If the same route repeatedly leaves the wheels spinning, tires are a better next purchase than cosmetic parts. Better grip reduces the number of situations in which planks or a winch are needed.
Best Value
Raise suspension for repeated grounding
When the chassis catches on rocks or ruts, suspension addresses the cause rather than the symptom. More engine power is useful only after the vehicle can clear and maintain contact with the terrain.
Raise protection when damage, not traction, ends runs
Protection is the right follow-up when the vehicle can complete a route but arrives with too little condition for the return. Pair it with the repair kit on remote trips.
Delay cosmetics until the route is reliable
The database lists 197 cosmetics, but cosmetic progression does not solve a stuck vehicle, a missing anchor point or a damaged drivetrain. Buy appearance items after the recovery, terrain and carrying systems match the routes you actually drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon mistakes and corrections
| Mistake | What goes wrong | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving without an anchor because the winch is available | A tree may be absent, too far away or unusable from the vehicle’s position | Carry the portable anchor on remote or open routes |
| Using every slot for objective tools | A successful collection attempt can leave no repair or recovery option | Buy tool slots before adding more specialist equipment |
| Choosing engine power before tires or suspension | The vehicle still slips or grounds, so power does not solve the route’s real constraint | Prioritize grip and clearance, then evaluate power |
| Skipping the repair kit on a long loop | Small impacts accumulate and make the return leg the most dangerous part | Carry repair and use the camp as a planned resupply point |
| Saving the camp until the inventory is empty | The nearest resupply point may be too far away to reach safely | Plan the campsite stop before the limited-use tools run out |
| Treating the 125-Pebble recipe as universal | A community starting point may not fit every vehicle or terrain choice | Use it as a baseline and adjust by observed failure mode |
| Assuming exact carry limits or timers | Published material does not establish those values | Rely on the in-game inventory and campsite feedback rather than an invented number |
What is known—and what is not—about inventory limits
TechRadar identifies the portable anchor, two wooden planks, portable camp, repair kit and car jack as selectable tools and reports that these limited-use tools replenish at campsites. The available official Steam support metadata identifies Funselektor Labs Inc. as developer and publisher, lists an October 14, 2026 release date, and describes PC and online-play support. Contemporary coverage reports co-op sessions of up to four players.
No authoritative final-release table establishes exact carry limits for every tool, the precise number of uses per outing or a universal replenishment timer. Those values can vary by final implementation or update, so this guide deliberately uses the confirmed tool roles and the in-game inventory display rather than guessing. When planning a run, check the quantities shown before departure and again after a campsite visit.
Recommended setups at a glance
| Run type | Core tools | Upgrade emphasis | Resupply plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short general loop | Winch, anchor, planks, repair kit, flexible utility | First-level tires, suspension, protection and tool slots | Cabin or merchant nearby; camp optional |
| Remote resource run | Winch, anchor, planks, repair kit, portable camp | Tool slots, protection and terrain upgrades | Scheduled campsite stop |
| Steep or rocky route | Winch, anchor, planks, repair kit, jack or camp | Tires, suspension, protection before extra power | Camp if the route is far from a cabin |
| Photography or collection | Winch, anchor, repair kit, objective tools and extra slots | Tool slots first, then terrain and protection | Camp only when the route is long |
| Four-player expedition | Distribute anchors, repair kits, camp and objective tools across vehicles | At least one recovery-focused vehicle; add slots for specialists | Coordinate a campsite stop and use vehicles as winch anchors |
Bottom line
For a dependable first loadout, keep the winch, select a portable anchor, two planks, a repair kit and a portable camp, then buy the 125-Pebble recovery-minded explorer baseline: first-level tires, suspension, protection, winch and tool slots. Adapt one slot to the route, add tool slots before specialist equipment, and treat campsite resupply as part of long-run planning. This approach does not promise a single universal optimum; it gives every exploration or resource trip a recoverable answer to the problems most likely to end it.
