There is no verified one-size-fits-all winner among Instapaper alternatives. If you want a broader reading and annotation workflow, Readwise Reader is a documented option: it handles more than web articles and can bring highlights and notes into the reading process. If you mainly want a simple read-later queue, compare candidates by the devices you use, offline behavior, migration needs, and price before switching.
How to choose an Instapaper alternative
Start with the job you need the app to do. A basic save-for-later queue is different from a system for reading newsletters, marking up PDFs, and keeping searchable notes. Compare the following before moving your library:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Reading workflow: Do you need an inbox and archive, or also feeds, filters, highlights, and notes?
- Content formats: Are web articles enough, or do you want to save newsletters, PDFs, EPUBs, videos, or other material?
- Offline access: Check whether saved content is cached and what you must do before losing connectivity.
- Migration and portability: Find out whether imports preserve tags, highlights, reading status, and other metadata, and what export options are available.
- Platform coverage: Confirm support for your phone, browser, desktop, and any e-reader workflow you rely on.
- Price: Compare the current free tier, trial, subscription billing, or one-time purchase on each product’s official page.
The available comparison results name Matter, Raindrop.io, Wallabag, and GoodLinks as candidates, but current official details for those apps were not established here. Their features and prices are therefore not compared as verified facts.

Readwise Reader is worth considering if your saved reading extends beyond ordinary web pages. Its official overview lists newsletters, EPUBs, PDFs, videos, tweets, and other formats, alongside highlighting and annotation. That breadth may suit readers who want saved material and their notes in one workflow; it may be more than someone needs for a straightforward article queue.

Offline reading depends on caching
Reader supports offline use, but saved material needs to be cached first. The Reader documentation says to open the web app before going offline. On mobile, open the app so the document text is cached. Do not assume that an item you have not opened will be available without a connection.
Current listed price
Readwise’s pricing pages list a 30-day trial, followed by $9.99 per month when billed annually or $12.99 per month when billed monthly for Readwise, including Reader. These are the listed subscription terms, not a guarantee of future pricing; check the official pricing page before subscribing.

What to expect when moving your library
Readwise documents import routes for Instapaper, Matter, and Raindrop.io. The details differ by source, and an import should not be assumed to reproduce every part of the original library. After moving a collection, inspect a representative sample of older, newer, archived, and tagged items.
Importing from Instapaper
Readwise’s Instapaper import instructions describe a direct connection. Archived items map to Reader Archive; the 10 most recently saved unarchived items map to Inbox; other unarchived items map to Later. The documentation warns that some private Instapaper content is unavailable to third parties.
Rank #3
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
The same instructions note a possible Instapaper API export bug that can limit an export to 500 items. If the direct route appears incomplete, Readwise recommends downloading an Instapaper CSV and uploading it instead. Check the resulting library rather than assuming either route transferred everything.
Importing from Matter or Raindrop.io
For Matter, Readwise documents an email-mediated import and says that tags and document locations are not supported by that import at this time. For Raindrop.io, its documented route is to export bookmarks as a CSV and upload the file; the CSV needs a URL column, while a title column is optional. These are specific to the documented Reader imports and do not establish that other apps preserve the same data.

Which alternative fits your workflow?
- Consider Readwise Reader if support for several content types and a reading-plus-annotation workflow matter to you, and its subscription suits your budget.
- Look for a simpler queue if you mainly save articles to read later. Check the candidate’s official information for your required platforms, offline behavior, and organization tools rather than choosing by an unverified ranking.
- Prioritize a careful migration if your existing library contains important tags, highlights, or private items. Verify what the destination imports and exports before making it your only copy.
The documented details support evaluating Reader on its format coverage, offline caching, price, and import behavior. They do not establish a feature-by-feature winner against Matter, Raindrop.io, Wallabag, or GoodLinks.
