Valve describes it as a SteamOS PC with standalone capabilities. A gaming PC is needed only if you want the computer to run games and stream them to the headset. The deciding factor is whether the games you want are supported for standalone play or you plan to use PC streaming.
How Steam Frame can play games
Steam Frame has two distinct play modes. In standalone mode, the headset runs a supported game itself. In PC streaming mode, a computer runs the game and sends its video and audio to the headset. Valve calls the device primarily designed for high-quality PC game streaming, while also describing it as a full PC running SteamOS that can run games entirely on the headset without a connection to another computer. Steamworks Development explained these capabilities on June 4, 2026.

Can Steam Frame play games without a PC?
Yes, provided the particular game works in standalone mode. Having a game in your Steam library does not by itself establish that it will run on the headset without a PC. Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified program is intended to indicate how games work out of the box on the headset, including performance at default graphics settings, text and interface legibility, and controller usability.
Compatibility can change, so look up the current standalone status of each game you care about rather than relying on general Steam or SteamVR support. Valve lists a Snapdragon 8 Series processor, 16 GB of RAM, SteamOS, and 256 GB or 1 TB storage options with microSD expansion on its Steam Frame product page. Those specifications describe the headset; they do not mean every PC game in your library is supported standalone.

Can you stream your Steam library to Steam Frame?
Steam Frame is designed to stream games from a PC. In this mode, it is the computer—not the headset—that runs the game, so a gaming PC is relevant and must be suitable for the games and VR setup you intend to use.
Valve says Steam Frame includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated link between the headset and PC. That means the product is not described as requiring a separately purchased streaming adapter. It does not guarantee a particular streaming result: network conditions and the physical environment can affect the experience. Valve also describes foveated streaming as typically offering “over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth”; that is a Valve product-page claim, not an independent comparative test.

Do SteamVR’s PC requirements apply to standalone play?
No. SteamVR’s listed PC requirements concern using SteamVR on a computer; they are not requirements for games that run directly on Steam Frame. Valve’s SteamVR listing gives requirements for the PC route, including a Windows computer, processor, memory, graphics card, and network connection. Do not use those requirements to decide whether a game is supported in Steam Frame standalone mode.

- Choose standalone play if you want to use the headset without a connected computer. Check that your specific games are marked for Steam Frame standalone use.
- Choose PC streaming if you want the computer to run the game and send it to the headset. Plan around your PC and wireless setup, rather than assuming standalone support.
- Consider both if you want flexibility: some games may suit standalone play while others may be played through a PC stream. Verify compatibility title by title.
Valve also lists Zenni prescription inserts and an Arcturus Vision camera among compatible accessories. Neither is required for standalone gaming or PC streaming.
