1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a Kindle, send an EPUB through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service; do not assume a raw EPUB copied over USB will open. For a Kobo, copy a non-DRM-protected EPUB to the e-reader over USB. The two routes differ because Kindle accepts EPUB as a Send to Kindle input, while Kobo’s documented computer-import method is a direct file copy.
Send an EPUB to a Kindle with Send to Kindle
Amazon lists EPUB as a supported file type for Send to Kindle. You can upload the file on the web or email it to your Kindle’s Send to Kindle address. Amazon says the service sends documents to your Kindle library and devices or apps at no additional cost; availability on linked devices depends on the delivery and library settings.

Upload the EPUB on the web
- Open Amazon Send to Kindle and sign in to the Amazon account associated with your Kindle.
- Choose the EPUB file to upload. Amazon’s help page lists a maximum web-upload size of 200 MB per document.
- Turn on Add to your library if you want the document added to your Kindle library for linked Kindle devices and apps.
- Send the file, then connect your Kindle to the internet so it can receive the document. Delivery and availability can vary by device and sync state.
Amazon accepts EPUB as an input, but its documentation does not promise identical formatting or rendering across devices.

- Find the Send to Kindle email address for the Kindle device or app in your Amazon account.
- In Manage Your Content and Devices, add the address you will send from to the Approved Personal Document Email List.
- Attach the EPUB to an email addressed to the Send to Kindle address and send it. You do not need to add explanatory text for the file to be processed.
- Connect the Kindle to the internet to receive the document.
Amazon’s current email guidance allows up to 25 attachments and a total message size of 50 MB. It also says ZIP files can be used for larger sets of files; the service opens and converts them. These are service limits in Amazon’s help documentation and may change.

Can you transfer an EPUB to Kindle over USB?
Amazon documents USB file transfer, but that is not the same as confirming that every Kindle can open an EPUB copied directly to storage. For an EPUB, Send to Kindle is the documented route. If you still need to use USB for other supported files, follow the instructions for your computer and Kindle model.
Windows
Amazon says a connected Kindle appears as an external storage drive in File Explorer, where you can browse or transfer files. Its USB article does not establish that a raw EPUB copied this way will open on every Kindle model.

Mac
Amazon’s guidance says Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024 need a separate app for USB transfers on Mac. In the Send to Kindle for Mac app, use USB File Manager and drag files or folders into the Kindle’s Documents folder. Amazon says older Kindle models released before 2024, except Scribe, do not need a separate app for Mac transfer. These model-specific USB instructions do not make direct EPUB copying a substitute for Send to Kindle.

Put a non-protected EPUB on a Kobo over USB
Kobo’s computer-import instructions apply to non-protected EPUB and PDF files. This method copies the book to the Kobo you connect; it does not add the imported item to your other Kobo e-readers or apps.
- Turn on the Kobo e-reader and connect it to your computer with a USB cable.
- When the e-reader displays Computer detected, tap Connect.
- On the computer, open the KOBOeReader drive.
- Drag the EPUB file into the drive. You do not need to create a special folder.
- Eject the KOBOeReader drive from the computer before unplugging the cable.
- After the Kobo imports the book, find it under My Books.
Kobo recommends connecting directly to the computer and trying the included cable. Some USB-C hubs may not detect the e-reader. See Kobo’s computer-import instructions for the current steps.

Other Kobo import options
Kobo also names Google Drive and Dropbox as ways to load non-protected files. The setup and availability can depend on the model and the relevant Kobo instructions, so check the current Kobo Help Centre rather than assuming every e-reader supports the same cloud-import process.

What DRM means for EPUB transfers
DRM, or digital rights management, restricts how a purchased or borrowed ebook can be opened and moved. A file can have an EPUB extension and still be protected. Kobo’s documented USB import method excludes protected files; it is for non-protected EPUB and PDF files. Kobo links to separate instructions for protected content, but the computer-copy steps above do not unlock or convert it.

Amazon’s policy, effective January 20, 2026, allows verified purchasers to download EPUB and PDF files only for books confirmed as DRM-free. Amazon says DRM-protected books cannot be transferred to non-Kindle devices through this download route, and borrowed titles, including Kindle Unlimited books, are excluded. This does not mean every Amazon purchase can be exported. See the Amazon KDP DRM-free download policy for the conditions.
Fix common transfer problems
The EPUB does not arrive on a Kindle
- For email delivery, confirm that the sending address is on the Approved Personal Document Email List and that the file is attached to a message sent to the correct Send to Kindle address.
- Check the email attachment count and total size against Amazon’s published limits, and make sure the Kindle is connected to the internet.
- If using web upload, check that the file is within Amazon’s stated 200 MB maximum and that Add to your library is enabled if you expect it to appear in the library on linked devices.
- Confirm that the file is an EPUB and consider whether it is protected. An EPUB extension alone does not establish that a file is DRM-free.
The EPUB does not appear on a Kobo
- Check that the Kobo displayed Computer detected and that you tapped Connect. Without that step, the computer may not show the e-reader as a drive.
- Try a direct connection to the computer instead of a USB-C hub, and use the included cable if available.
- Verify that the EPUB is non-protected and that you copied it into the KOBOeReader drive, then ejected the drive before unplugging.
- Look in My Books after the device has had a moment to import the file.
Sending a file is different from delivering a purchased Kindle book
Use Send to Kindle or the applicable USB method when you have an EPUB file to import. Amazon’s manual delivery instructions cover books already in your Amazon account and registered Kindle devices; they are not instructions for importing an arbitrary EPUB file. If you want to move an Amazon-purchased book to Kobo, first establish that it is a confirmed DRM-free title and that you are an eligible verified purchaser under Amazon’s policy.
