Scale AI, Labelbox, SuperAnnotate, Encord, V7 Labs (Darwin), Appen and iMerit form a practical 2026 shortlist for image and video annotation. They are not interchangeable: Scale AI, Appen and iMerit primarily sell managed labeling capacity; Labelbox, Encord and V7 Labs are software-led platforms; SuperAnnotate spans both models. The right choice depends on your modalities, label complexity, throughput, privacy requirements, domain expertise and whether your own team will operate the workflow.

Use the comparison below to narrow the field, then run a representative pilot. Measure accepted-label cost, agreement, correction rate, edge-case handling, reviewer calibration and export reliability before signing a large contract.

What image annotation and labeling providers do

Computer-vision models learn from examples in which people or automated systems mark the objects, regions, actions or attributes that matter. A provider may supply the annotation software, the workforce, or both. Typical outputs include bounding boxes, polygons, semantic-segmentation masks, instance masks, keypoints, lines, cuboids, classifications and frame-by-frame tracks.

The work becomes more demanding when data includes video, LiDAR or other 3D sensors, geospatial imagery, DICOM studies, unusual camera angles, tiny objects, severe class imbalance or safety-critical decisions. A vendor that is excellent for thousands of ordinary product photos may be a poor fit for radiology or autonomous-driving data.

Managed services handle recruiting, training, scheduling and quality operations for you. Software platforms let your employees or contractors label data in a controlled environment and often add model-assisted tools, APIs, dataset management and evaluation links. Hybrid providers combine a platform with optional managed teams.

Seven providers at a glance

Encord Software-led multimodal platform Computer-vision and multimodal datasets Curation, traceable labeling, natural-language search, metadata filters and embedding similarity Regulated or evaluation-heavy teams linking data to model performance Commercial terms are not stated publicly in the supplied material
V7 Labs (Darwin) Software platform with managed options available from the provider Images, video, radiology and other visual data Model-assisted auto-annotation, AI Review rules, SDK and dataset exports Visual, video and medical-imaging workflows Confirm current edition and volume pricing
Appen Distributed managed workforce Image, text, video, audio, geospatial and multimodal data Calibrated contributors, review, agreement checks and statistical sampling Enterprise programs needing broad geographic and modality coverage Confirm workforce geography, security and price during procurement
iMerit Specialist managed service with platform support Complex computer vision, healthcare and physical-AI data Human-in-the-loop teams and quality monitoring Domain-heavy projects where expert review is essential Confirm delivery footprint, certifications and quote

There is no defensible universal ranking. Comparison sources published in 2026 emphasize that modality, scale, security, domain expertise and service model determine the best choice.

1. Scale AI: managed annotation for high-volume programs

Scale AI is the clearest fit when you want a vendor to operate a substantial labeling program rather than hand a small team a self-serve tool. Comparison coverage describes broad support for images, video and sensor data, together with workforce operations designed for enterprise throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why teams choose it

  • Managed staffing, task routing and operational oversight reduce the internal work required to recruit and coordinate annotators.
  • Its scope extends beyond still images, which is useful when a project combines video frames or sensor captures with ordinary camera data.
  • It is suited to programs where consistent delivery and capacity planning matter more than a lightweight do-it-yourself interface.

Questions to settle before contracting

Ask how the proposed team will be trained on your ontology, how difficult examples are escalated, which reviewers are assigned, where data is processed and how subcontractors are controlled. Request service-level definitions for throughput, rework and acceptance, not just a per-task estimate. The provider’s 2022 AI Readiness Report said 48% of respondents selected computer vision when asked which types of machine-learning systems they work on; that is a survey statistic, not a market-share measure or a guarantee of performance for your dataset.

2. Labelbox: a configurable enterprise training-data platform

Labelbox appears in 2026 comparisons as a platform for image, video, text and additional modalities. It is aimed at organizations that want to configure workflows, connect storage and model systems, and operate annotation with their own staff or selected contractors.

Where it fits

  • Model-assisted labeling can help a team start from predictions and correct them instead of drawing every shape from scratch.
  • Integrations are useful when data scientists need a repeatable path from source files to labeled datasets and then to training or evaluation.
  • Configurable projects can accommodate different taxonomies, review stages and user roles within one organization.

Procurement considerations

Labelbox pricing is plan- or quote-dependent in the available material, so do not infer a current rate from an old blog post or a third-party table. Clarify whether charges are based on seats, storage, workflow volume, model-assisted operations, managed labor or a combination. Confirm export formats, API limits, retention settings and the treatment of data generated by model-assisted tools.

Best use cases

Choose this model when your team wants control over ontology and review but may need extra capacity for a deadline, a new modality or a sudden increase in volume. Internal experts can define difficult classes and adjudicate edge cases while an external team performs routine work in the same operating environment.

What to validate

  • How handoffs work between your employees and the managed team.
  • Whether reviewer roles, consensus rules and audit history are available at the project level.
  • Which formats are supported for import and export, and whether object IDs remain stable across revisions.
  • How the quote separates platform access, labor, project management and rush capacity.

A hybrid arrangement can reduce lock-in, but it also creates responsibility for deciding which tasks stay internal and how both groups are calibrated.

4. Encord: multimodal curation and traceable labeling

Encord positions its platform around data curation, traceable labeling and the connection between dataset decisions and model performance. Its workflow supports natural-language search, metadata filters and embedding-based similarity before annotation, helping teams find representative or problematic examples rather than labeling blindly.

Why evaluation-heavy teams consider it

When a model fails on a narrow visual pattern, the important task is often locating similar cases, checking their metadata and tracing the correction through later dataset versions. Search and curation features can shorten that loop. This is particularly relevant for regulated products, where a team may need to explain why an image was included, who changed a label and which model version used it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claims and due diligence

Encord’s product material says it is “trusted by 350+ computer vision teams” (vendor claim, 2026). That figure should not be read as an independent adoption ranking. Ask for a demonstration using your own taxonomy, and verify role-based access, audit logs, retention, data residency and export behavior before treating the platform as suitable for a regulated workflow.

5. V7 Labs (Darwin): visual, video and radiology workflows

V7 Labs’ Darwin documentation covers image and video annotation, radiology labeling, dataset management and model-assisted auto-annotation. The platform is a strong candidate when a project needs visual-specific tooling plus a documented software-development interface.

AI Review and validation rules

Darwin’s AI Review feature applies natural-language validation rules, highlights annotations that do not conform and tracks rule versions. V7 states that processing takes 4–8 minutes; treat that as the provider’s documented processing estimate, not a guaranteed end-to-end turnaround for every dataset. Rules can be useful for checks such as required classes, size limits or relationships between objects, but human reviewers still need to resolve ambiguous imagery.

SDK and export fit

The Darwin SDK documents imports, dataset operations and exports including COCO and CVAT. Confirm that the chosen export preserves masks, tracks, attributes, image or frame identifiers and any review metadata your training pipeline requires. For radiology, separately verify DICOM handling, access controls, regional processing and the qualifications of reviewers who will see protected health information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Appen: a distributed managed workforce

Appen is described in 2026 provider comparisons as an enterprise annotation service spanning image, text, video, audio, geospatial and multimodal data. Its operating approach uses calibrated contributors, review processes, inter-annotator agreement checks and statistical sampling.

When its model is useful

Appen can suit organizations that need a large, geographically distributed workforce or several modalities under one procurement relationship. Calibration is especially important when a project has subjective classes: contributors first work through labeled examples and feedback before production tasks are counted.

Contract checks

Workforce geography, security controls, subcontracting, language coverage and availability can change by program. Confirm the actual countries and facilities assigned to your project, not just the provider’s global footprint. Request definitions for agreement, sampling frequency, rework and escalation, then connect those measures to payment and acceptance. Pricing and current workforce details should be confirmed during procurement.

7. iMerit: specialist teams for complex and domain-heavy data

iMerit is positioned as a specialist for complex computer vision, healthcare and physical-AI programs. Its model combines an annotation platform with human-in-the-loop teams and quality monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why specialist coverage matters

In healthcare, robotics or physical-AI datasets, a correct label may depend on anatomy, sensor geometry, operating conditions or a safety rule that a generalist annotator cannot infer. A specialist team can embed domain-qualified reviewers and create escalation paths for uncertain cases instead of forcing every item into a simplistic class.

Verification points

  • Identify the credentials and experience required for primary annotators, reviewers and adjudicators.
  • Ask how rare events are sampled so that agreement scores are not inflated by easy negatives.
  • Confirm current delivery locations, certifications, access controls and retention for your target region.
  • Define how the platform records reviewer decisions, corrections and model-assisted suggestions.

For safety-sensitive projects, require an auditable chain from source file to final accepted label and document who is authorized to override a disputed annotation.

Managed service or software your team runs?

Choose a managed service when you have a large backlog, a fixed launch date, limited annotation operations experience or a need for recruiting and workforce management. Choose software-led operation when your subject-matter experts must label the data themselves, the ontology changes frequently or your security policy prevents external personnel from viewing raw files. A hybrid approach is practical when internal experts handle taxonomy and adjudication while an external team performs repeatable production work.

Decision factor Managed service usually wins when… Software-led operation usually wins when…
Capacity Volume is high or unpredictable and staffing is not a core competency You have a stable trained team and can add capacity internally
Domain knowledge The provider can supply qualified specialists and a documented review chain Your own experts must make nearly every semantic decision
Privacy Contractual controls and approved facilities satisfy your policy Raw data must remain inside your controlled environment
Ontology changes Changes are infrequent and can be rolled into formal retraining Frequent iteration requires your team to edit rules immediately
Operations You want the vendor to schedule, calibrate and monitor workers You already have project management, QA and data-engineering capacity

How to select a provider step by step

  1. Write the ontology before requesting final bids. Define every class, attribute, relationship, allowed overlap, “unknown” state and example of an edge case. Include whether the task is detection, segmentation, classification, keypoint, tracking or 3D annotation.
  2. Inventory the data. Record image and video counts, average resolution, frame rate, file formats, sensor types, DICOM or personally identifiable information, languages, geographic restrictions and expected monthly growth.
  3. Set acceptance rules. Decide how much boundary error is acceptable, how missing objects are handled, what agreement target applies and who adjudicates disagreements. A single accuracy percentage is not enough for imbalanced or safety-critical data.
  4. Shortlist by operating model and modality. Remove providers that cannot support your required data type, residency or workforce arrangement before comparing features.
  5. Run a representative pilot. Include ordinary examples, rare classes, low-quality frames, occlusion, glare, motion blur and the hardest domain-specific cases. Do not let a vendor select only easy images.
  6. Measure accepted-label cost. Track first-pass labels, reviewer corrections, rework, rejected items, management time and storage or platform fees. Divide total cost by labels that pass your acceptance gate, not by raw tasks submitted.
  7. Test exports in your real pipeline. Load COCO, CVAT or another required format into your training and evaluation tools. Check masks, tracks, attributes, IDs, coordinate systems, timestamps and character encoding.
  8. Negotiate measurable service levels. Specify throughput, turnaround, reviewer coverage, defect thresholds, escalation time, rework obligations and what happens when volume or class definitions change.
  9. Complete security and legal review. Verify data residency, encryption, access logging, retention and deletion, subcontractors, incident notification, model-training rights and audit access. Put these terms in the contract.
  10. Start with a controlled production tranche. Recheck calibration after the first batches, monitor drift in agreement and correction rates, and expand volume only when the quality trend is stable.

Quality controls that matter more than a headline accuracy number

  • Calibration: reviewers and annotators label the same training examples and discuss disagreements before production.
  • Consensus: multiple people label difficult or high-risk items, with an adjudicator resolving conflicts.
  • Inter-annotator agreement: report agreement by class and difficulty, not only as one blended score.
  • Statistical sampling: randomly inspect accepted and rejected work so quality checks do not focus only on obvious failures.
  • Rule validation: enforce requirements such as one class inside another, minimum object size or mandatory attributes.
  • Versioned audit trails: retain who created, reviewed and changed each annotation, the rule or model used, and the reason for an override.
  • Edge-case queues: route ambiguity to trained specialists instead of silently forcing a label.

For medical, autonomous-driving and other safety-sensitive datasets, require domain-qualified review and an audit trail. A fast workflow that cannot explain disputed labels creates risk that is difficult to remove later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost, throughput and commercial questions

Public, apples-to-apples pricing is not established for these seven providers. Quotes can combine labor, platform access, project management, quality review, storage, model-assisted operations, rush capacity and minimum commitments. Per-image or per-object rates therefore do not predict your final cost.

Ask each provider to price the same pilot specification and show assumptions for image complexity, object count, video frame sampling, revision rounds and acceptance thresholds. Request separate line items for setup, ontology design, calibration, production, adjudication, export and ongoing support. Compare the resulting cost per accepted label and the internal time your team must contribute.

Also ask what happens when your ontology changes, a class becomes much rarer than expected, volume falls below a minimum, or you need a second region or language. A low initial rate can become expensive if rework, minimums or change orders are opaque.

Security and compliance checklist

  • Where are files, backups and annotation interfaces hosted?
  • Can you restrict access by project, role, device, network and geography?
  • Are subcontractors used, and can you approve or reject them?
  • How are source files, temporary downloads, exports and deleted records handled?
  • Does the provider use your data to train its own models or improve shared systems?
  • What logs, penetration-test summaries, certifications or audit reports are available?
  • How quickly will the provider notify you of a suspected breach?
  • For health, biometric or location data, which regional and sector-specific rules apply?

Do not treat a general security page as a contract. Have your legal and security teams verify the exact service, region, subcontractors and retention schedule attached to your order.

Which provider should you choose?

Start with Scale AI or Appen when the primary problem is managed capacity across a large or varied program. Consider Labelbox when your organization wants a configurable enterprise platform and will operate much of the workflow. SuperAnnotate suits teams that want a platform but may also need managed labor. Encord is oriented toward curation, traceability and model-evaluation loops. V7 Labs Darwin is compelling for visual, video and radiology workflows that benefit from validation rules and documented exports. iMerit deserves attention when healthcare, physical AI or other specialist knowledge dominates the task.

Those are fit recommendations, not guarantees. A representative pilot with your ontology and hardest examples is the only reliable way to compare accepted-label quality, turnaround and total cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does image annotation cost?

The available provider comparisons do not establish a current, comparable price table. Obtain like-for-like pilot quotes and calculate total cost per accepted label, including review, rework, platform, storage and project-management charges.

What is the best option for medical images?

V7 Labs documents radiology workflows, while Encord and iMerit address traceability or specialist, healthcare-oriented operations. Require DICOM handling, regional privacy controls, qualified reviewers and an auditable review trail before selecting any provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a startup buy a managed service or annotation software?

Use managed capacity when staffing and operations are the bottleneck. Use software when your own experts must control every label and raw data cannot leave your environment. A hybrid pilot can test both approaches without committing to a full rollout.

How can I compare providers fairly?

Give each finalist the same ontology, representative sample, acceptance thresholds and export requirements. Compare agreement, correction rate, edge-case handling, turnaround and cost per accepted label rather than a headline per-task price.
