Best Home Energy Monitors for Tracking Heating and Electricity Waste

Best overall: Emporia Vue 3 Home Energy Monitor. It combines stated ±2% accuracy, one-second data, solar support, and enough current-transformer (CT) inputs to monitor a whole panel plus many individual circuits. For a three-phase installation or threshold-based alerts, Shelly 3EM is the stronger fit. Neither device is a complete heating audit: an electricity monitor can reveal electric heaters, heat pumps, water heaters, blowers, and other loads, but it cannot directly measure gas, oil, propane, duct leakage, insulation, or air leakage.

The useful buying decision is therefore not simply which monitor is “most accurate.” It is whether you need total household demand, circuit-level diagnosis, three-phase measurement, alerts, or a broader assessment of the building and heating system.

Choose the monitor by the question you need answered

A whole-home monitor clamps CT sensors around the service conductors in the electrical panel and reports the combined demand of the home. That is enough to identify an overnight baseload, a large appliance cycle, or an unexpectedly high peak. It cannot tell you which circuit caused the change unless the system also supports branch CTs.

Branch monitoring adds a sensor to selected breakers or conductors. You can then separate electric resistance heat, a heat-pump compressor, an air-handler blower, a water heater, a dryer, an electric vehicle charger, or a kitchen circuit. This is the level of detail needed to connect a heating bill with actual electrical operation.

Three-phase homes, workshops, and some larger properties need a meter designed for three phases. A single- or split-phase monitor may produce incomplete or misleading totals if its phase arrangement does not match the panel. Check the service configuration and the product’s approved wiring arrangement before buying.

  • Need a whole-home baseline and circuit diagnosis: Emporia Vue 3 is the most versatile choice in the supplied specifications.
  • Need three-phase measurement or threshold alerts: Shelly 3EM is designed for that use case.
  • Need to find heat loss through the building envelope or fuel system: Use monitor data as evidence, then arrange a professional energy evaluation.

Why an electricity monitor cannot measure all heating waste

Heating is often the largest energy service in a home, but the energy may not enter through the electric panel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that space heating and air conditioning together accounted for 52% of U.S. household annual energy consumption in 2020. The U.S. Department of Energy’s current Energy Saver guidance says heating and cooling use more energy than any other home system and commonly represents 43% of a typical utility bill.

An electrical monitor sees the input to electric equipment. It can measure a resistance furnace, baseboard heater, electric boiler, heat-pump compressor, circulation pump, air-handler motor, or electric water heater. It does not directly see natural gas burned by a furnace, propane delivered to a tank, oil consumption, heat escaping through an uninsulated wall, duct leakage, infiltration around windows, or a thermostat that is poorly scheduled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction prevents a common misdiagnosis. If the monitor shows a large, sustained load whenever the thermostat calls, investigate equipment operation and controls. If heating costs are high while electrical demand remains modest, the missing energy may be in a fuel bill or in losses from ducts and the building envelope. DOE describes whole-house weatherization and energy evaluations that examine insulation, air sealing, HVAC condition, the electrical system, and major baseload appliances.

Emporia Vue 3: best all-rounder for whole-home and circuit data

Emporia’s 2024 technical specification lists ±2% measurement accuracy and real-time readings at one-second intervals. The same specification supports up to three 200-amp mains CT channels and sixteen 50-amp branch CT channels. That combination lets a household start with a whole-home total and add branch sensors where the data matters most.

What it can reveal

  • A high overnight baseload that persists when the home is unoccupied.
  • Long, flat demand from electric resistance heat or a water heater.
  • Compressor and blower cycling from a heat pump or central HVAC system.
  • Large, predictable peaks from dryers, ovens, EV charging, or workshop equipment.
  • Solar production and the relationship between generation, household use, and grid import when configured for solar monitoring.

Emporia’s product collection lists configurations for whole-home, three-phase, flexible-sensor, solar, alert, and EV-charger-compatible applications. The specific Vue 3 installation still has to match the panel’s phase arrangement, voltage limits, available space, and CT ratings. Confirm those details before purchase rather than assuming that every configuration supports every service entrance.

Where Vue 3 is a good fit

Choose it when you want to identify which circuits drive heating-season peaks, when you expect to add branch sensors over time, or when solar and EV loads belong in the same dashboard. Sixteen 50-amp branch channels provide substantially more circuit visibility than a mains-only installation, although a panel with more circuits than available channels still requires prioritization or additional hardware.

Important installation checks

  • Verify whether the service is single-phase, split-phase, or three-phase and whether the supported configuration matches it.
  • Confirm the panel voltage and the current rating of every mains and branch CT you plan to use.
  • Check that the enclosure and panel have physical room for the monitor, wiring, and CT leads.
  • Have a qualified electrician perform panel work where local law, insurance, or the equipment instructions require it.

Shelly 3EM: best for three-phase measurement and threshold alerts

Shelly describes 3EM as a professional three-phase meter that can monitor whole-home, circuit, or appliance consumption in real time. Its alert function can notify you when consumption crosses a preset threshold. That is useful for detecting a heater that remains on, a freezer or pump that fails to cycle normally, or a total load that exceeds a chosen limit.

Why three-phase capability matters

In a three-phase service, loads are distributed among phases. A meter designed for that arrangement can report each phase and the combined total, helping you see imbalance or a high draw concentrated on one phase. It is also suitable when a workshop, heat pump, or other large load is wired across a three-phase supply.

Use the specified CT ecosystem

Shelly’s support documentation warns that substituting CTs from another brand can make measurements inaccurate or unreliable. Use the CT types and wiring methods specified for 3EM, and verify that the sensor rating fits the conductor being measured. Threshold notifications are only useful when the underlying installation is correct.

Where 3EM is a good fit

Select it when three-phase support is the primary requirement, when you want a simple whole-home or selected-circuit meter with real-time data, or when automation depends on crossing a defined power threshold. If you need a large number of separately monitored branch circuits, compare the available channel count and expansion path with your panel plan before deciding.

How to choose the right specification

Phase compatibility

Read the electrical service label or ask an electrician whether the home is single-phase, split-phase, or three-phase. A monitor must measure every energized phase that contributes to the loads you want to track. For split-phase North American panels, the two hot legs usually need to be sensed so the reported total includes both. For three-phase service, use equipment explicitly designed and configured for that arrangement.

Whole-home versus branch channels

Start with the circuits most likely to answer your question. For heating, that may be the heat-pump breaker, resistance-heater elements, air-handler blower, boiler pump, or electric water heater. Add EV charging, a dryer, or a workshop circuit if those loads obscure the heating pattern. A mains-only monitor can still show when total demand rises, but it cannot prove which appliance caused the rise.

Sensor ratings

CTs are rated for a maximum current and must fit the conductor and installation method. A 50-amp branch sensor is not a substitute for a mains sensor on a 200-amp service. Never force a CT around a conductor or use a sensor outside the manufacturer’s approved range.

Accuracy and time resolution

Accuracy matters when you are comparing a small standby load with a large heater, while time resolution determines whether short compressor cycles are visible. Vue 3’s published ±2% figure and one-second data are unusually concrete buying criteria. For Shelly 3EM, the supplied documentation establishes real-time operation and alerts but does not provide a directly comparable accuracy number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data access and connectivity

Before installation, determine how readings reach the dashboard or automation system, whether the device needs a reliable home network, and how data can be exported for comparison with utility bills. A monitor that records only a live display is less useful for weather-adjusted analysis than one that retains historical intervals. Confirm retention and export behavior in the current documentation for the exact model and firmware.

Install and configure a monitor safely

Electrical panels contain lethal voltages even when individual breakers are off. Follow the product manual and local electrical code. If you are not qualified to work inside the panel, hire a licensed electrician.

  1. Document the service. Record the panel make, service rating, phase arrangement, main-breaker rating, and the circuits you want to observe.
  2. Map the target circuits. Label the heating, HVAC, water-heating, EV, and major appliance breakers before sensor placement. Do not rely on an old or inaccurate panel directory.
  3. Confirm sensor ratings. Match every mains and branch CT to the expected current and conductor size. For Shelly 3EM, use only the CT types specified by Shelly.
  4. Plan physical placement. Check that the monitor, CT leads, and communication wiring fit without pinching covers or interfering with breakers.
  5. Install with power isolated as required. The electrician should follow the manufacturer’s shutdown, isolation, grounding, and enclosure instructions and verify that the panel can be closed safely.
  6. Configure phases and circuits. Assign each CT to the correct phase and label it with the breaker or load it measures. A swapped phase can create incorrect totals even when every sensor is functioning.
  7. Validate the readings. Turn a known load on and off, such as a kettle or heater, and confirm that the expected circuit and total respond in the correct direction. Compare the monitor’s accumulated energy with the utility meter over a representative interval.

A practical workflow for finding heating waste

  1. Establish a baseline. Collect data across representative cold and mild days, including overnight periods and times when the home is unoccupied. Record outdoor conditions and thermostat schedules.
  2. Compare with bills. Reconcile the monitor’s electricity total with utility-bill kWh. Differences can come from billing-period dates, solar export, meter boundaries, or loads not included in the monitor configuration.
  3. Label and isolate circuits. Watch each heating-related branch for sustained demand, repeated cycling, and overnight operation. Note whether the load appears only during a call for heat or continues afterward.
  4. Pair energy with runtime. Compare electrical traces with thermostat calls, occupancy, and fan settings. A blower that runs continuously has a different remedy from a compressor that cycles normally but serves a poorly insulated house.
  5. Investigate the dominant cause. Check thermostat settings, equipment schedules, filters, refrigerant or combustion-system service records, and control wiring. Do not change several variables at once.
  6. Escalate when the data is incomplete. If heating costs do not match electrical demand, arrange a professional evaluation of fuel use, ducts, insulation, air sealing, windows, and HVAC condition.
  7. Measure one change at a time. Compare weather-adjusted periods after a schedule change, maintenance visit, insulation upgrade, or air-sealing job. The monitor documents a change in energy use; it does not by itself prove why savings occurred.

Recognize common load signatures

Electric resistance heat

Resistance elements usually create a large, steady load while energized. Several stages may appear as distinct plateaus. If that load runs for long periods during mild weather, check thermostat staging, auxiliary-heat settings, outdoor-unit operation, and insulation before assuming the heater itself is defective.

Heat pumps

A heat pump generally shows compressor cycling plus a smaller indoor-blower load. Auxiliary or emergency resistance heat can create a sudden step up in demand. A monitor can show when that stage operates; a technician must determine whether the cause is a control setting, low outdoor temperature, defrost operation, or equipment fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Air handlers and fans

A blower that runs continuously produces a persistent smaller load. Compare its schedule with thermostat fan settings, ventilation controls, and humidity equipment. Continuous operation may be intentional, but it should be explainable.

Electric water heaters

Water-heater elements often appear as long, high-power cycles, sometimes overnight. Compare those cycles with occupancy and hot-water use. Insulation, setpoint, recirculation, and a leaking hot-water fixture can change runtime without changing the heater’s rated power.

Baseload and standby consumption

When the home is empty, refrigerators, networking equipment, pumps, alarms, and standby electronics form the baseline. A high baseline is worth investigating separately from heating. Switch off one circuit at a time only when it is safe and you know what equipment it serves; never disable life-safety systems or medical equipment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When the monitor does not explain the heating bill

A low electrical trace does not prove that the home is efficient. Gas, oil, and propane systems can consume substantial energy outside the electrical panel. Combustion appliances may also run efficiently while the building loses heat through the attic, walls, floors, windows, or leaky ducts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arrange an energy evaluation when fuel use is high, rooms are unevenly heated, the HVAC system runs for long periods without reaching the setpoint, or the monitor shows no electrical load corresponding to the reported heating cost. A qualified assessor can inspect insulation levels, air leakage, duct condition, combustion equipment, controls, and ventilation. DOE guidance indicates that combining maintenance, equipment upgrades, insulation, air sealing, and thermostat improvements can reduce heating and cooling use by 20% to 50%; the achievable result depends on the home and the work performed.

Use a thermostat as a control layer, not a substitute

An ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat can provide feedback about the energy consequences of settings and can help control runtime. ENERGY STAR’s product criteria require certified smart thermostats to give residents some form of feedback about those consequences. That feedback complements a monitor: the thermostat explains calls for heat and schedules, while CT data shows the electrical response.

Use the two datasets together. If the thermostat reports a short call but the heater remains energized, investigate controls or wiring. If the thermostat reports long calls and the electrical load is normal, look at equipment capacity, airflow, insulation, and air leakage. Avoid assuming that a lower setpoint always saves energy if it triggers expensive auxiliary heat or creates comfort problems that lead to manual overrides.

Troubleshooting inaccurate or confusing readings

  • Total is roughly half of the utility bill: Check whether one phase is missing, a mains CT is reversed, or the configuration does not match the service.
  • A branch shows power when the appliance is off: Verify that the CT surrounds only the intended conductor and that it is assigned to the correct circuit.
  • Readings jump when loads start: Inspect CT placement, loose connections, phase assignment, and network interruptions. Compare a known load before changing settings.
  • Solar appears as consumption: Confirm whether the sensor is measuring generation, household load, or grid import/export and whether the dashboard’s sign convention is correct.
  • Alerts trigger too often: Set thresholds above normal startup surges and short cycling, then review the alert window and delay options available for the model.
  • Historical data has gaps: Check network coverage, device power, account retention, and firmware status. Do not infer a low-energy day from missing intervals.
  • Temperature and energy disagree: Align timestamps, thermostat schedules, utility billing dates, and outdoor-weather data before drawing conclusions.

Decision guide

  • Choose Emporia Vue 3 if you want one system that can start with mains monitoring and expand to many branch circuits, with a published ±2% accuracy figure, one-second readings, solar options, and EV-related configurations.
  • Choose Shelly 3EM if your installation is three-phase, you prioritize real-time threshold notifications, or you want a professional meter for selected circuits and whole-home measurement using Shelly’s specified CTs.
  • Choose a monitor plus an energy evaluation if heating uses gas, oil, or propane; if the home has comfort complaints; or if electrical data cannot account for the fuel bill.
  • Add a smart thermostat when schedule control, runtime feedback, and occupant behavior are part of the problem. Keep the thermostat and monitor as complementary tools.

Costs, availability, and realistic expectations

Current prices, inventory, sellers, commissions, and regional program availability change frequently and are not fixed specifications. Check the current manufacturer or retailer listing for the exact model, CT bundle, shipping region, and installation requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No universal dollar saving can be attributed to buying a monitor alone. Savings depend on which loads the data exposes and whether you correct them. Treat the device as a measurement and verification tool: establish a baseline, make a defined change, and compare weather-adjusted results over comparable periods.

Bottom line

For most homes that want both total demand and circuit-level clues, Emporia Vue 3 is the strongest all-round recommendation from the published specifications. Shelly 3EM is the better match for three-phase service and threshold alerts. To find heating waste rather than merely electrical waste, combine either monitor with thermostat/runtime information and, when the numbers do not line up, a professional whole-house energy evaluation.
