The best green screen for live streaming is the one that covers everything your camera sees behind you, fits your room, and can be set up and lit evenly. For a seated face-camera shot, a compact pop-up or chair-mounted screen may be enough; for full-body framing or several people, look for a wider backdrop and a support system. Before buying, frame your shot and check the camera preview.
How to choose a green screen for your stream
Start with the shot, not a product label. A screen must cover the full background area you want to replace, including the edges visible when you move. Set up your camera where it will normally sit, frame yourself, and use its preview to estimate the width and height needed. Leave extra coverage if you move, lean, or expect more than one person in the shot.

Match the size to the camera framing
- Seated face-camera: A smaller panel can work if it fills the visible area behind your head and shoulders.
- Full-body framing: Choose a screen tall and wide enough to remain behind you as you stand or move.
- Multiple people or a broad shot: Plan for substantially more width and height, plus floor space for the backdrop and its support.
There is no single best screen dimension for every streamer: camera distance, lens field of view, subject movement, and room layout all change the coverage required.
Consider storage and setup time
Collapsible case or roller screens and pop-up panels suit frequent setup and teardown because they deploy and store quickly. Folded fabric is flexible and portable, but can crease and may need separate poles, stands, and clamps. A chair-mounted screen can save floor space for a seated webcam shot, though chair fit and coverage at the edges can be limiting.

Compare dimensions, mounting hardware, stands, clamps, and any included lighting. When blue may make sense
Blue is an alternative to green, not a universally better choice. The more useful color depends on the scene, lighting, and what the subject is wearing or holding. Choose a surface that contrasts with the subject and can be lit evenly.

- Position the camera and frame the shot. Use the actual camera view and intended streaming position; a screen that looks large in the room may still leave gaps at the frame edges.
- Mount and smooth the backdrop. Secure fabric so it does not sag or shift. Address visible folds, since uneven folds and shadows create different shades for the keyer to interpret.
- Light the backdrop as evenly as practical. Avoid strong bright spots and deep shadows across the keyed area. A non-reflective fabric can help avoid distracting reflections, but lighting needs depend on the room and the gear you already own.
- Check the subject against the key color. Green clothing or objects can disappear with a green key; reconsider clothing, props, or the key color when they overlap.
Configure OBS chroma key
OBS’s Chroma Key filter removes instances of a selected color from a source. It is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Add it to the camera source, then tune it while watching the live camera feed rather than relying on a preset.

- Select the camera source in OBS and open its Filters.
- Add a Chroma Key effect filter. Choose green or customize the key color to match the backdrop.
- Adjust Similarity gradually. This controls how aggressively OBS removes pixels near the selected color. Raising it too far can remove parts of the subject.
- Set Smoothness to soften the edges of the removed area. Watch for a halo or an overly soft outline.
- Use Spill Reduction to reduce traces of key color around the subject’s edges.
- Inspect hair, shoulders, and movement. Move as you normally would on stream; refine the controls if edges break up, colored fringes remain, or background patches survive.
OBS documentation dated 2022-01-12 lists default values of 400 for Similarity, 80 for Smoothness, and 100 for Spill Reduction. They are software defaults, not recommended universal settings; the right values depend on the camera, backdrop, and lighting.
Can you use software instead of a physical screen?
NVIDIA Broadcast offers AI background removal, replacement, and blur without a physical backdrop. It may suit a creator whose computer meets NVIDIA’s requirements, but it is not a universal substitute: availability depends on supported hardware and software. NVIDIA’s page lists Windows 10 64-bit and a qualifying RTX GPU, including GeForce RTX 2060 or higher in the listed requirements. It also lists at least 8 GB of RAM, specified driver versions, and an internet connection during installation. The page has shown different app version references (2.2.0 and 2.2.1); verify the current requirements on NVIDIA’s page before installing.

Common problems and fixes
- Unkeyed patches remain: The screen may not fill the camera frame, or its color may vary because of folds, shadows, or uneven illumination. Reposition or smooth the backdrop and improve evenness before increasing Similarity.
- Hair, clothing, or shoulders disappear: Similarity may be too aggressive, or the subject may contain the key color. Lower Similarity, check the selected key color, and adjust clothing or props if practical.
- A green fringe appears around the subject: Improve the backdrop lighting and tune Spill Reduction while watching the camera preview.
- The screen keeps slipping or sagging: Check that the support is compatible with the screen and firmly secured; fabric setups may need additional poles or clamps.
- The backdrop is not visible where expected: Recheck the camera’s actual crop, position, and field of view. Increase coverage or adjust the framing rather than assuming the listed screen size guarantees a clean key.
- AI background effects are unavailable: Check NVIDIA Broadcast’s current operating-system, GPU, memory, and driver requirements; a non-qualifying configuration may need a physical screen or another supported option.
