What Is Multistreaming? A Complete Guide for Live Streamers

Multistreaming sends one live program to multiple platforms at once. Compare local outputs, cloud relays, and hosted studios, then plan capacity and check platform rules.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—is broadcasting the same live program on more than one platform at the same time. You can send separate outputs from your computer to each platform, send one feed through a cloud relay, or use a hosted studio that produces and distributes the show. The right choice depends on your upload capacity, computer, preferred production workflow, platform rules, and the formats your viewers need.

What multistreaming means

YouTube Help defines the practice simply: “You can go live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time.” A single live production can therefore be available to audiences on services such as YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, or LinkedIn at once. It does not guarantee that more people will watch, or that engagement or revenue will increase; those outcomes depend on the audience and how the event is run.

Multistreaming is about distributing a live program, not necessarily producing it. You still need a way to capture or create the show—such as an encoder or hosted studio—and an eligible account on every destination.

Three ways to send a live show to multiple platforms

Approach How it works May suit you if… Trade-offs to check
Local encoder with separate outputs Your computer and streaming software encode and send a stream to each destination. You want direct control over your encoding workflow and have enough computer and network capacity. Combined outbound bitrate, CPU/GPU load, encoder configuration, and managing each destination’s stream key.
Local encoder plus cloud relay Your encoder sends one feed to a relay service, which distributes it to the destinations you choose. You want to keep using OBS or another local encoder but avoid sending a separate local feed to every platform. Relay compatibility, destination caps and plan terms, an additional service dependency, per-platform setup, and policy compliance.
Browser-based studio A hosted studio handles the live production workflow and sends the show to connected destinations. You value a simpler production setup, guest participation, or integrated comments over maintaining a local encoder workflow. Browser and device needs, supported platforms, features and destination limits by plan, price, and layout controls.

Local outputs: more direct control, more local capacity required

With separate local outputs, the computer encodes and uploads each destination’s feed. YouTube’s illustrative planning example adds a 6 Mbps output and a 4 Mbps output for a combined 10 Mbps target, then recommends an upload connection around 1.5–2 times that total—15–20 Mbps in this example—for stability. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee: real performance depends on the connection, encoding workload, and stream conditions.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Cloud relay: one local feed, another service in the path

A relay receives one feed from your encoder and distributes it onward. YouTube describes this as sending one high-quality stream to a cloud service, which then sends copies to the other destinations. Restream’s OBS guide describes a similar workflow: connect channels, connect OBS to Restream, then start the broadcast from OBS. Restream also describes unified chat and aggregated analytics; these are vendor-described features, not independent performance findings.

A relay can reduce the number of outbound feeds your computer sends, but it does not remove every constraint. Your connection must still sustain the feed to the relay, and the computer still has to produce that feed. You also rely on the relay service and its supported destinations and plan limits. YouTube notes that cloud services often involve a subscription, although some offer limited no-cost plans.

Browser studio: production and distribution in one hosted workflow

StreamYard describes a browser-based studio with direct platform integrations, custom RTMP options, consolidated comments, and landscape or portrait streaming. Its page, accessed in 2026, listed one destination on Free, three on Core, and up to eight on Advanced and Teams. The same page listed a paid starting price of $20/month for new users in the first year when billed annually. These are vendor-published plan terms and prices, which may change; check the current page before choosing a plan. A hosted studio’s device needs, production features, and destination options differ from using your own encoder with a relay.

Plan bandwidth and computer capacity

For separate local outputs, add the target bitrates of all simultaneous destinations, then plan for upload headroom. YouTube’s example is 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, or 10 Mbps combined, with 15–20 Mbps upload recommended for stability. The 1.5–2-times figure is guidance, not a promise that a connection will remain stable.

  1. Set the bitrate target for each output, based on that destination’s requirements and the stream you intend to send.
  2. Add the simultaneous output bitrates to estimate the total outbound load.
  3. Plan for upload capacity around 1.5–2 times that combined target, using YouTube’s guidance as a planning reference rather than a guarantee.
  4. Test under realistic conditions with typical audio and motion, then monitor each destination’s stream-health indicators during the event.

For a relay workflow, the computer sends one feed to the service rather than a separate outbound feed to every destination. The relay’s ingest requirements, your connection quality, the chosen bitrate, and your computer’s encoding workload still matter. Avoid treating vendor statements about “the same load” or standard broadband as universal performance guarantees.

Check destination eligibility and rules before you schedule

YouTube channel readiness

YouTube Help says a channel needs to be verified and live streaming enabled. Its current help page also lists a minimum age of 16, no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days, a limit of 10 active streams per channel, and a limit of 3 active streams per stream key; both stream limits apply at once. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take at least 24 hours. These platform requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current help guidance before a scheduled event.

Accounts, stream keys, and RTMP details

YouTube’s instructions for streaming across platforms say to have active accounts in good standing on the other channels. Depending on the encoder and destination, you may need each service’s stream key and RTMP server URL. Treat stream keys as credentials: use the correct key for each destination and do not publish or share it. A mistaken or exposed key can prevent the intended broadcast or let someone else stream to the channel.

Twitch simulcasting policy

Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ says not to use Twitch to direct viewers to a concurrent stream on another platform. Its examples include links or prompts in profile material, banners, QR codes, broadcast titles, go-live notifications, and chat commands. Read the current Twitch policy and the rules of every other destination before you promote or run a simultaneous broadcast; platform policies can change.

Can you stream horizontal and vertical video at the same time?

YouTube Live Control Room can provide a horizontal 16:9 version and a vertical 9:16 version at the same time. YouTube says viewers use one shared live URL and the same chat, and vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed. The vertical composition may be created by cropping or adjusting the horizontal layout, so a scene designed for a wide frame may not translate cleanly to a phone screen.

YouTube lists differences between the formats in features including clickable links, ads, 4K broadcast, premieres, and live redirect. With a third-party encoder, use the appropriate stream keys and matching content for each orientation. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. Check the current feature and setup requirements before going live.

Prepare for both aspect ratios

  • Keep faces and important on-screen text inside the parts of the frame that remain visible in both orientations.
  • Review overlays, scene changes, and shared-screen material in both 16:9 and 9:16 layouts.
  • Confirm that your encoder or production tool can send the required formats and keys before the event begins.

Choose a setup by comparing the workflow, not just the platform count

Before settling on a tool, compare the details that affect your actual show:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Destinations: Are the platforms you need supported directly, or will you need custom RTMP setup? What are the current destination caps?
  • Local resources: How many outputs will your computer encode and upload? Can its CPU/GPU and internet connection handle that workflow?
  • Formats: Do you need horizontal and vertical versions at the same time, and can the tool handle each layout as intended?
  • Production needs: Do you need guests, scene controls, or a browser-based setup, or do you prefer to produce the show in your existing encoder?
  • Chat and moderation: Can you see and manage comments across the destinations you plan to use?
  • Policy and plan fit: Check each platform’s current rules alongside the service’s supported features, destination limits, and price.

For example, Restream describes a cloud relay integrated with OBS, while StreamYard describes a browser studio with integrated production features. Their descriptions are not independent benchmarks; weigh their current documented features and terms against your setup rather than assuming one workflow will perform identically for every creator.

Troubleshoot common multistreaming problems

What you notice Possible cause What to check
One or more destinations drop, buffer, or show poor stream health. The combined local upload demand exceeds available headroom, or the connection is unstable. For separate local outputs, add their target bitrates and compare the total with your real upload capacity. Reduce the load or use a one-feed relay workflow if appropriate, then monitor each destination’s health indicators.
The computer struggles as the show starts. Multiple local encodes may be demanding too much CPU/GPU capacity. Check encoder workload and whether your setup is producing a separate encode for each destination. A relay may reduce separate local outbound feeds, but the computer must still encode the feed sent to it.
A destination does not receive the broadcast. The destination may not be enabled for live streaming, or its account, stream key, RTMP URL, or service integration may be incorrect. Confirm account eligibility and live-stream access, then check that the correct destination and current stream credentials are configured in your encoder or service.
The vertical version is missing or badly framed. The vertical format may not have been configured before the start, or a crop may cut off important content. Configure the required orientation, content, and stream key before going live. Preview both frames and keep essential content within each composition.
You can’t find a Twitch-safe way to promote the other live destination. Twitch’s simulcasting guidance restricts directing viewers from Twitch to a concurrent stream elsewhere through several promotional mechanisms. Review Twitch’s current Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ and remove prohibited prompts, links, or other redirection before the event.

Keep copyright and channel policies in view

Multistreaming does not change the rights you need for the content in your broadcast. Before sending a show to multiple services, verify that you have permission for its music, video clips, images, and other material on each destination. Platform rules and account restrictions also apply separately; being allowed to stream on one service does not establish that the same content or promotion is allowed on another. Check the current policies for every platform you plan to use.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded, prerecorded video live on YouTube 24/7; it is not a multistreaming relay for a live camera show or a way to broadcast to Twitch, Facebook, or other platforms. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Visit StreamNeo or start the free trial.
