Short answer: Kualo, GreenGeeks, and DreamHost are the most defensible choices from the published evidence available for websites seeking web hosting powered by renewable energy. Kualo makes the clearest direct and certified claim for specific facilities; GreenGeeks publishes the most precise renewable-energy matching figure; DreamHost describes renewable electricity in the grids serving its data centers but provides less detail. The right choice depends on your visitors’ geography, the hosting tier you need, and whether you require physical renewable supply, certified procurement, or an accounting match.
Evidence-based shortlist
“Green hosting” is not one standardized product category. Providers can use renewable electricity at a facility, buy renewable power through a market or certificate program, match consumption with renewable-energy purchases, or make a broad statement about the electricity mix of the grid serving a data center. Those approaches are not interchangeable, so the comparison below labels the evidence rather than treating every sustainability claim as equivalent.

| Provider | Renewable-energy evidence | Geography stated in the evidence | Hosting scope or location information | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kualo | States that its U.S. data center uses 100% renewable energy certified by Green-e; its U.K. data center uses green-sourced power procured on the Open Energy Market. The Green Web Foundation directory lists Kualo’s shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting as powered by 100% renewable energy. | United States and United Kingdom facilities are specifically described. | Shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting are listed by the Green Web Foundation. | Which facility will host your account, whether the certificate or procurement coverage applies to that facility and term, and whether your selected plan can be placed there. |
| GreenGeeks | States that every watt it uses is matched 300% by renewable energy. | Four global data-center locations are listed, but the evidence does not establish that every location has identical physical power arrangements. | Choose the location that best serves your audience and confirm the plan and region available there. | How the 300% match is calculated, which instruments are used, the accounting period, and whether your account’s facility is included. |
| DreamHost | Says its data centers are powered by grids that obtain electricity from many renewable sources. | Grid-based statement; no facility-by-facility percentage is given in the reviewed material. | Mainstream hosting option; confirm the exact product and data-center region. | The renewable share for the facility serving your account, the measurement period, and any certificates or reports supporting the statement. |
This is a shortlist, not a claim that one provider is universally best. Kualo has the strongest directly documented facility claim. GreenGeeks offers the clearest quantified matching commitment. DreamHost may suit readers who value a mainstream host and accept a less-quantified grid statement.
What “green hosting” actually means
Direct renewable electricity
A data center may buy electricity through a contract tied to renewable generation or operate under an arrangement in which renewable power is delivered to the facility. Kualo’s statement about its U.S. facility is unusually specific: it says the site uses 100% renewable energy and that this is certified by Green-e. That identifies both a percentage and a certification framework, but you should still ask which facility will serve your account and for what period the certification applies.

Certified procurement and market instruments
Power on a shared grid is physically mixed. A provider can support renewable generation by purchasing certified renewable electricity or related instruments even when electrons from a particular generator cannot be traced to an individual server. Kualo says its U.K. data center uses green-sourced power procured directly on the Open Energy Market. Treat that as a procurement description rather than assuming that every second of electricity consumed by the facility is physically renewable.
Renewable-energy matching
GreenGeeks says every watt it uses is matched 300% by renewable energy. A matching claim is an accounting or procurement commitment: the provider purchases or supports an amount of renewable energy that is three times its stated consumption. It should not automatically be rewritten as “every server is physically powered by renewable electricity at every moment.” Ask whether the figure is annual, which instruments qualify, and how the provider handles changes in demand.
Grid-based renewable statements
DreamHost says its data centers are powered by grids that obtain electricity from many renewable sources. That is a broader grid description. It does not state a percentage or identify a certificate for each facility in the reviewed material, so use it as a less-quantified claim. A grid’s renewable share can vary by region and over time, which makes the exact facility and measurement period important.
Provider profiles
Kualo: clearest facility-level documentation
Kualo is the strongest fit when your priority is a direct, facility-specific renewable claim. Its current provider statement says: “Our U.S. datacenter uses 100% renewable energy, as certified by Green-e, and our U.K. datacenter uses green-sourced power procured directly on the Open Energy Market.” The distinction between the two locations matters. The U.S. statement includes a 100% figure and certification; the U.K. statement describes the source and procurement route without assigning a percentage.
Independent directory evidence adds useful scope. The Green Web Foundation directory lists Kualo’s shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting as powered by 100% renewable energy. Directory coverage is valuable because it is separate from the provider’s own marketing, but it does not remove the need to confirm the facility and plan you will receive. A shared plan could be assigned differently from a dedicated server, and a provider can change locations as capacity changes.
Kualo also says it uses low-power servers and technologies including NVMe drives, LiteSpeed Cache, and Redis to improve performance and reduce energy use. These measures address efficiency as well as electricity sourcing. Faster storage and caching can reduce the server work required for a page request, although the provider’s statement does not quantify an energy saving for any individual website.

Questions to ask Kualo:
- Will the account be hosted in the U.S. or U.K. facility, and can you choose?
- For the U.S. facility, what certificate period and facility boundary does the Green-e claim cover?
- For the U.K. facility, what does “green-sourced” procurement cover and how is it documented?
- Are shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud products all available in the region you need?
GreenGeeks: strongest quantified matching statement
GreenGeeks publishes the most specific numerical matching claim in this comparison: every watt it uses is matched 300% by renewable energy. The number is easy to understand but easy to overstate. It describes a matching commitment, not proof that the physical electricity entering each server is renewable at every instant. Your sustainability report should call it a 300% renewable-energy match unless the provider supplies stronger evidence for a physical supply arrangement.
The provider lists four global data-center locations. Location selection therefore becomes part of the environmental and performance decision. A site close to your visitors can reduce network distance and latency, while a different region may have a different grid mix. The published evidence does not establish that all four facilities use identical physical renewable arrangements, so obtain location-specific clarification before treating the 300% figure as a facility-level attribute.
Best fit: a buyer who values a clear, quantified renewable matching commitment and wants several global locations, provided they are comfortable distinguishing matching from physical supply.
Questions to ask GreenGeeks:
- Does the 300% match apply to the specific data center selected for my account?
- Is the figure calculated monthly, annually, or over another accounting period?
- Which renewable-energy certificates, contracts, or other instruments are included?
- Can you provide the reporting period and retirement or cancellation records for the instruments?
DreamHost: mainstream option with a broad grid statement
DreamHost says its data centers are powered by grids that obtain electricity from many renewable sources. That can be meaningful, but the statement is less quantified than the claims above. It does not provide a renewable percentage or a facility-by-facility certificate in the reviewed material. Do not convert “many renewable sources” into “100% renewable” or a fixed percentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDreamHost can be appropriate when you want a mainstream hosting provider and are willing to evaluate sustainability using a broader grid-based description. Ask for the exact facility serving your plan, the grid region, the renewable share used in the provider’s statement, and the period on which that information is based. If the answer remains general, record it as an unquantified grid claim in your procurement notes.

How to compare renewable claims fairly
1. Separate the claim type
Write the claim in the provider’s own category: direct renewable supply, certified procurement, renewable-energy matching, or grid-based statement. A 100% certified facility claim and a 300% matching claim answer different questions. The first speaks more directly to a named site; the second describes the relationship between consumption and renewable purchases.
2. Check the geography
Ask where the servers will run, not merely where the company has an office. Kualo identifies U.S. and U.K. facilities. GreenGeeks lists four global locations. DreamHost’s statement concerns the grids serving its data centers. If your audience is concentrated in one country, choose a region that balances latency, data-residency obligations, and the provider’s strongest renewable evidence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Match the evidence to the hosting product
Confirm that the renewable claim covers the product you intend to purchase: shared, VPS, dedicated, cloud, WordPress, or reseller hosting. Kualo’s independent directory listing explicitly includes shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting. For the other providers, obtain product- and facility-specific confirmation rather than assuming that a statement about the company covers every tier.
4. Examine efficiency as well as generation
Renewable procurement does not make inefficient infrastructure irrelevant. Ask about server generations, storage, caching, cooling, virtualization, and utilization. Kualo specifically cites low-power servers, NVMe drives, LiteSpeed Cache, and Redis. These are practical efficiency measures, but no quantified per-site reduction is established, so compare them as design practices rather than promised savings.
5. Demand a time period
“Renewable” can describe a contract that changes annually, a certificate retired for a defined period, or a grid average measured over a particular interval. Record the year or accounting period, the facility, the instrument, and whether the figure is recurring. Without those qualifiers, a precise-looking percentage can be misleading.

Choose by website scenario
Small brochure site or portfolio
Start with the nearest suitable facility and a shared plan whose renewable coverage is documented. Kualo is the clearest option when its U.S. or U.K. facility matches your audience and plan requirements. If location or features do not fit, compare GreenGeeks’ nearest data center and document the 300% figure as a match rather than physical supply.

Content-heavy publication
Prioritize caching, storage performance, and predictable scaling alongside renewable evidence. Kualo’s stated use of NVMe, LiteSpeed Cache, and Redis is relevant to this workload. Ask whether those technologies are included on your chosen tier and whether traffic spikes move the account to another facility.
Application requiring a VPS or dedicated server
Confirm the exact facility before ordering. Kualo’s directory coverage includes VPS and dedicated hosting, which makes its evidence easier to map to these products. For any provider, request written confirmation that the server will remain in the renewable-covered region for the contract term.
International audience
Use the provider’s location list to place servers near major user groups, then compare the sustainability evidence for each region. GreenGeeks lists four global locations, but the reviewed claim does not establish identical physical arrangements at each one. A slightly more distant facility with stronger documentation may be preferable to a nearby location with only a general statement.
Site with formal sustainability reporting
Keep an evidence file containing the provider’s wording, facility, product, certificate or matching method, accounting period, and date checked. Kualo’s Green-e reference and Green Web Foundation listing provide two distinct evidence types. For GreenGeeks, preserve the 300% statement and the explanation of how the match is calculated. For DreamHost, record the grid-based wording without adding a percentage that the provider does not publish.
Due-diligence checklist before signup
- Facility: Which data center will host the account, and can the region be selected or changed?
- Product: Does the claim cover the exact shared, VPS, dedicated, cloud, WordPress, or reseller plan?
- Evidence: Is the claim based on physical supply, certified procurement, matching, or a grid description?
- Time: What year, billing period, or certificate term does the number cover?
- Scope: Does it include servers, storage, cooling, networking, and backup systems, or only purchased electricity?
- Verification: Is there a certificate, independent directory entry, public methodology, or report?
- Continuity: What happens if the account is migrated to another facility?
- Efficiency: Which low-power hardware, storage, caching, and cooling practices are actually used on your tier?
- Performance: Will the greener location meet your latency, uptime, and data-residency requirements?
Migration and setup steps
- Map your audience and obligations. List your main visitor regions, data-residency requirements, expected traffic, and application dependencies.
- Shortlist facilities, not just companies. For Kualo, distinguish the U.S. and U.K. statements. For GreenGeeks, identify which of its four locations would serve you. For DreamHost, identify the grid region for the selected data center.
- Request written sustainability details. Ask the questions in the due-diligence checklist and save the response with the date.
- Select the smallest suitable tier. Avoid paying for idle capacity. Efficient utilization reduces unnecessary compute, storage, and cooling demand regardless of the electricity contract.
- Move a staging copy first. Test caching, database behavior, email delivery, backups, monitoring, and regional latency before changing DNS.
- Record the evidence in your sustainability notes. Store the provider wording, facility, plan, certificate or matching method, and accounting period.
- Recheck after migration. Confirm that the production account is in the promised region and that a later support move has not changed the facility.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a match “physical renewable power”
A 300% match is not the same statement as a server receiving renewable electricity at every moment. Use precise language in your site sustainability page: describe the match, its period, and its scope.
Best Value
Applying a U.S. claim to a U.K. account
Kualo’s U.S. statement includes Green-e certification, while its U.K. statement refers to green-sourced power procured on the Open Energy Market. Keep those claims separate and identify the facility in your records.
Turning a broad grid statement into a percentage
DreamHost’s wording does not establish a percentage. Do not publish “100% renewable” or another number unless the provider supplies it for the relevant facility and period.
Ignoring non-electricity impacts
Renewable electricity addresses one part of hosting’s footprint. Hardware manufacturing, replacement cycles, network equipment, backups, and cooling still matter. Ask what the provider’s claim includes, and avoid presenting a power certificate as a complete lifecycle assessment.
Choosing a distant region solely for a sustainability label
Longer network paths can increase latency and may affect user experience. Compare regional performance, legal requirements, and renewable evidence together rather than optimizing one variable in isolation.
A practical decision rule
Choose Kualo when you need the most explicit facility-level evidence and its U.S. or U.K. location fits your audience and product. Choose GreenGeeks when a quantified renewable-energy match and a choice among four global locations are more important than a claim of physical renewable supply. Choose DreamHost when mainstream hosting is the priority and an unquantified renewable-grid statement meets your reporting standard.
Whichever provider you select, publish the claim with its qualifiers: provider, facility, product, evidence type, percentage if one exists, certification or matching method, and date. That wording is more credible than a generic “eco-friendly hosting” badge and remains understandable when the provider changes facilities or contracts.
The Bottom Line
Kualo offers the strongest documented facility-level renewable evidence, GreenGeeks offers the clearest 300% renewable-energy matching figure, and DreamHost offers a broader grid-based claim. Compare the exact facility and hosting plan, distinguish physical supply from accounting matches, and keep the time period and verification details attached to every sustainability statement.
