The best starting point for a horror game is not a single preset. Build a stable frame-time baseline: assign the game to the high-performance GPU, enable VRR when your display supports it, cap frames below the display’s maximum refresh, turn on the game’s low-latency mode or NVIDIA Reflex, keep textures as high as your VRAM permits, and reduce ray tracing, reflections, volumetric fog, shadows and screen-space effects before lowering resolution. Confirm each change with a frame-time graph, because a consistent frame rate usually feels better than a higher average interrupted by spikes.
Why horror games make stutter and latency so obvious
Dark scenes give your eyes fewer stable reference points, so a small camera judder or traversal hitch stands out. Slow, deliberate exploration also makes a delayed mouse movement feel disconnected from the scene. The result is that a horror game can feel rough even when its average FPS looks acceptable.

Two different problems are often described as “stutter.” A frame-pacing problem means frames arrive at uneven intervals; input latency is the time between a mouse or controller action and the resulting image. They interact, but the fix is not always the same. A GPU-bound game may need cheaper lighting or effects, while a CPU-bound game may need a frame cap, fewer background tasks or a patch that fixes streaming.

Shader compilation creates a third pattern. Microsoft explains that compiling shaders at launch or just in time during play can cause longer load times, in-game shader-compilation stutter and higher power use. Epic describes the visible event more specifically: the renderer discovers that it needs a new shader immediately before drawing, then stops while the driver compiles it. This is why a title can hitch the first time you enter a room, see a particular material or trigger a new effect, then run normally on a later visit.

Find the bottleneck before changing quality
Use frame time, not only average FPS
Enable the game’s performance overlay or a trusted hardware monitor that shows frame time and GPU utilization. Average FPS can hide a repeating 30-millisecond spike between otherwise fast frames. A graph with a nearly flat line is usually preferable to a higher average with tall spikes, particularly in a dark corridor where camera movement is easy to judge.
Change one setting at a time, reproduce the same route or scene, and compare the graph. Keep a short note of the setting, frame-time behavior, GPU utilization and VRAM use. This prevents a visual improvement from being mistaken for a performance improvement and makes it possible to return to the last stable configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRecognize a GPU limit
If GPU utilization is close to full while frame time rises, start with the effects that do the most work per pixel:
- Ray tracing
- Reflections
- Volumetric fog and other volumetric lighting
- Shadow quality and shadow distance
- Screen-space effects
- Resolution scale, after the effects above have been tested
Lower one of these, repeat the same camera movement, and check whether the frame-time line becomes more stable. A large improvement after lowering an effect indicates that the game was GPU-bound rather than that every setting must be reduced.

Recognize a CPU, streaming or shader limit
If the GPU is not near full utilization but frame time still spikes, lowering resolution may do little. Investigate CPU limits, asset streaming, shader compilation, background work and recent game patches instead. A single busy CPU thread can limit a game even when total CPU usage appears moderate. Traversal hitches that occur in the same places are more suggestive of streaming or shader work than of a permanently weak GPU.
Set Windows and display controls first
Assign the game to the high-performance GPU in Windows 11
On systems with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is using the intended adapter:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Choose the game from the list, or use Browse to add its executable.
- Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Restart the game and verify the active GPU in the game overlay or your driver monitor.
Windows 11 also exposes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says the compatible flip-model path can reduce frame latency and support variable refresh rate (VRR) on supported displays. Enable it for the title when you play in a borderless or windowed mode, then test the game rather than assuming that the setting is beneficial in every engine.
Enable VRR and cap frames below the display maximum
Turn on Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync or G-SYNC-compatible VRR in the monitor’s on-screen menu when available. Enable the corresponding VRR option in the graphics driver and in the game if the title provides one. Then set a frame-rate cap that the system can sustain below the display’s maximum refresh rate. The exact cap depends on the display and the game; the important requirement is headroom, so the GPU does not repeatedly collide with the refresh ceiling.
VRR makes presentation timing more predictable, but it cannot repair a game that is constantly missing its target. If frame time regularly exceeds the cap, lower a GPU-heavy setting or choose a lower, sustainable cap. Microsoft’s DXGI guidance frames the latency goal as minimizing the time from input receipt to the next display update; consistent pacing is central to that goal.

Use the game’s low-latency mode or NVIDIA Reflex
Enable the title’s low-latency option when it is available. For supported games, NVIDIA Reflex aligns engine work just in time for rendering and removes the GPU render queue in GPU-bound situations. This can reduce the amount of work waiting ahead of the newest input, but it does not make an overloaded scene inexpensive. If the game offers both a low-latency switch and a Reflex option, follow the title’s own guidance and test the combination with the frame-time overlay.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Avoid stacking several driver-level latency overrides without measuring. NVIDIA’s control-panel documentation warns that higher smoothing can increase lag: its “High” setting applies additional smoothing but may produce observable input latency. Prefer the game’s tested low-latency path, then use driver controls only when the title requires them.
Use this in-game quality order
After the platform controls are set, tune from the most expensive and least noticeable effects toward the settings that change the whole image. The order is a practical heuristic, not a universal benchmark.
| Setting | First action | Why it helps | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray tracing | Disable it or select a lower mode when the GPU is saturated | Ray-traced lighting and reflections can consume substantial GPU time in dark scenes | Loss of physically accurate lighting or reflections; test whether the atmosphere still works for you |
| Volumetric fog and lighting | Reduce one step before lowering resolution | Fog, beams and dense volumetric effects can create large per-frame costs | Less depth and fewer visible light shafts |
| Reflections | Lower quality or resolution | Reflection calculations can be expensive while contributing little in many rooms | Soft or missing reflections on wet floors, glass and polished surfaces |
| Shadows | Lower quality or distance if the GPU remains bound | Large shadow maps and long draw distances increase rendering work | Stepped edges, shorter shadow coverage or altered mood |
| Screen-space effects | Reduce ambient-occlusion and other screen-space options gradually | These effects add full-screen passes and can amplify GPU load | Flatter contact shadows or less depth around objects |
| Resolution scale | Lower only after testing the effects above | It reduces the number of pixels every rendering pass must process | Blurrier image and less readable fine detail |
| Textures | Keep high until VRAM pressure appears | Texture quality primarily consumes VRAM rather than continuously increasing shader cost | Streaming hitches, texture pop-in or sudden drops when the VRAM budget is exceeded |
Keep textures high, but respect VRAM
Texture quality is usually the best place to preserve visual detail in a horror game because it does not carry the same per-pixel cost as volumetric lighting or ray tracing. Select the highest texture setting that fits within the available VRAM, then watch the game’s memory indicator and the frame-time graph while moving through a new area.
When the texture budget is exceeded, the symptoms can be intermittent: a smooth opening room followed by hitches as new surfaces stream in, delayed texture replacement or severe pauses during rapid traversal. If those symptoms appear, lower texture quality one step before cutting resolution. If VRAM use remains comfortably below the limit and the graph is stable, keep textures high and spend your performance budget elsewhere.

Upscaling and frame generation: use them after the baseline is stable
Upscaling
Establish a stable native or resolution-scale baseline first. Only then enable the game’s temporal or spatial upscaler and compare image quality and frame time in the same scene. Upscaling can reduce the number of pixels rendered internally, but aggressive modes may soften thin geometry, distant text or high-contrast edges. In a horror game, shimmering wires, fences and shadow boundaries can be more distracting than a modestly lower resolution.
If the base frame rate is unstable, upscaling can hide the cause without fixing it. Return to the baseline, identify whether the problem is GPU, CPU, streaming or shader related, and then use upscaling as an additional margin rather than as a substitute for diagnosis.
Frame generation
Frame generation can make motion appear smoother by inserting generated frames, but it does not remove the underlying simulation and render work. It therefore should not be used to mask a poor base frame rate. A generated frame can display more often while the game still processes input and simulation at the slower native cadence, so judge mouse response from the base behavior as well as the displayed smoothness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Let shader preparation finish
Do not interrupt a title while it is compiling or preparing shaders unless it is genuinely stuck. The first run after a driver update, game update or graphics-option change may take longer because the game is building data it will reuse later. Epic documents pipeline-state-object caching and precaching as ways to reduce runtime compilation and hitching; games that implement these systems may show a preparation screen or progress indicator.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Repeatedly clearing shader caches is not a performance tweak. It removes data intended to prevent the same compilation work from recurring. Clear a cache only when troubleshooting a documented corruption problem or when the game developer specifically instructs you to do so, then allow the next preparation pass to complete before judging performance.
Best Value
If a hitch happens exactly when a new effect first appears and becomes less frequent after revisiting the area, record it separately from ordinary frame pacing. A low-latency setting or lower resolution cannot eliminate a shader that has not yet been compiled; the durable fix is successful preparation, a game patch, a driver fix or a change in the title’s shader pipeline.
Fix problems that are not GPU quality problems
Background activity
Close unnecessary recording, browser, update and overlay tasks while testing. Background work can steal CPU time, create disk contention or trigger brief scheduling interruptions. Re-test after each change so that you do not attribute an improvement to a graphics option that was never responsible.
Asset streaming and storage
Traversal hitches that repeat at the same doorway, hallway or scripted reveal can indicate asset streaming rather than a quality preset. Check whether the game is installed on a drive with adequate free space and whether another task is heavily using that drive. If the issue appeared immediately after a patch, check the developer’s known-issues notes and update history before changing every setting.
Frame synchronization trade-offs
Synchronization settings involve a real trade-off. Epic’s frame-syncing documentation notes that decreasing the synchronization value can reduce input latency by shortening the engine pipeline, but it also makes hitches more likely to cause dropped frames. Choose the shortest pipeline that remains stable in your game; the lowest possible queue is not automatically the smoothest choice.
Preset strategies for different priorities
| Strategy | Use it when | Core choices | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere-first | You have enough GPU and VRAM headroom and value lighting detail | Keep textures high; retain shadows and volumetrics; enable VRR; cap below maximum refresh | Lower headroom for busy scenes and a greater risk of GPU saturation |
| Balanced | You want stable pacing without making dark scenes look flat | Keep textures high; reduce ray tracing, reflections and volumetrics one step; use upscaling only after a stable baseline | Some loss of reflected and volumetric detail for more consistent frame times |
| Latency-first | Mouse response matters more than cinematic effects | Disable or reduce ray tracing; lower reflections, volumetrics, shadows and screen-space effects; enable low-latency mode or Reflex; use a sustainable cap | Less lighting richness and shorter shadow or reflection detail |
| VRAM-constrained | Texture streaming or memory pressure causes hitches | Lower textures one step; keep expensive effects modest; monitor VRAM while traversing new areas | Less surface detail, but fewer streaming-related pauses |
These profiles are starting points, not guarantees. A title with a CPU limit may gain little from the latency-first GPU reductions, while a heavily ray-traced title may respond immediately. Let the frame-time graph decide which profile fits your hardware.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The game is smooth in a room but hitches while moving between areas
- Check for shader preparation or a first-use effect.
- Watch disk activity and VRAM use during the transition.
- Lower textures if the VRAM budget is being exceeded.
- Look for a game or driver update if the hitch repeats at fixed locations.
Average FPS is high, but camera movement feels uneven
- Inspect frame-time consistency rather than the FPS counter.
- Enable VRR on the display, driver and game where supported.
- Cap frames below the display’s maximum refresh rate.
- Test the game’s synchronization and low-latency options one at a time.
Mouse response feels delayed when the GPU is fully loaded
- Enable the game’s low-latency option or NVIDIA Reflex if available.
- Reduce ray tracing, reflections, volumetrics, shadows or screen-space effects.
- Use a sustainable frame cap so the GPU is not permanently queued with work.
- Avoid high smoothing settings that add observable input lag.
Lowering resolution changes almost nothing
- Confirm whether GPU utilization was actually high.
- If it was not, investigate CPU limits, streaming, shader compilation and background tasks.
- Compare the same route after a complete shader-preparation pass.
- Check whether a recent patch changed performance.
A repeatable tuning procedure
- Restart the game after assigning it to the Windows 11 high-performance GPU.
- Enable VRR on the display, in the driver and in the game when supported.
- Set a frame cap below the display’s maximum refresh that the system can sustain.
- Enable the title’s low-latency mode or NVIDIA Reflex.
- Choose high textures only if the VRAM budget remains comfortable during traversal.
- Run a repeatable route with a frame-time overlay and note GPU utilization, VRAM use and hitch locations.
- If the GPU is saturated, lower ray tracing, reflections, volumetrics, shadows and screen-space effects in that order before reducing resolution scale.
- If the GPU is not saturated, investigate CPU work, streaming, shader preparation, background tasks and patches instead of lowering every visual setting.
- Test upscaling after the base profile is stable; test frame generation only when the native base rate already feels responsive.
- Keep the last stable configuration and change only one variable during later experiments.
This process produces a setting profile tied to your hardware, display and the specific horror game rather than to a generic preset label. It also leaves you with a clear recovery path: return to the last stable setting, complete shader preparation, and retest the same scene before making another change.
