Best Graphics and Controller Settings for Smoother Action-RPG Combat

The most reliable way to make action-RPG combat feel smoother is to hold a frame rate your system can sustain, keep frame times even, and remove the few settings that cause sudden GPU spikes. Set your display to its highest refresh rate, enable variable refresh rate (VRR) when both the display and GPU support it, and cap the game below the rate your system can repeatedly maintain. Then tune controller layout, deadzone and camera sensitivity around your own stick condition rather than copying someone else’s numbers.

Use the guide below as a cross-game baseline. Exact labels vary by game, monitor, driver and platform, but the order of decisions remains useful for dodge, parry, block and camera timing.

Start with a stable frame-time target

Combat feels consistent when each frame arrives at a regular interval. A higher average FPS does not compensate for repeated drops, shader-compilation pauses or large frame-time spikes during a boss attack. Choose the highest cap your system can sustain in the busiest area of the game, not the number shown in an empty room.

Recommended baseline

Setting Starting choice Why it helps
Display refresh Highest supported Hz Higher refresh reduces scanout time and gives the display more opportunities to show a completed frame.
VRR On when supported by the display and GPU Matches refresh to changing frame delivery and reduces visible tearing within the display’s operating range.
FPS cap A sustainable value below the refresh ceiling Prevents the GPU from oscillating between overloaded and underused states.
Textures High, if VRAM permits Textures are often less damaging to frame time than ray tracing, volumetrics or shadows, provided they fit in available VRAM.
Heavy effects Reduce only as needed Ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections and costly post-processing commonly create GPU-limited spikes.

NVIDIA recommends selecting the maximum refresh rate and lowering in-game settings when necessary to improve performance and latency. Apply the same principle on other hardware: a repeatable cap is usually preferable to an uncapped number that repeatedly falls during combat.

Configure the display, VRR and synchronization

  1. Select the maximum refresh rate. In your operating system’s display settings or GPU control panel, choose the panel’s highest available refresh mode. Confirm that the game is not switching back to a lower rate in its own display menu.
  2. Enable VRR. Turn on the monitor or television’s adaptive-sync feature, then enable the corresponding VRR option in the GPU driver or console display settings. Check that the game is running in a mode that supports VRR; some borderless and exclusive-fullscreen implementations behave differently.
  3. Measure the difficult scene. Test a crowded hub, weather effect or boss arena. Watch for sudden drops rather than relying only on the average FPS counter.
  4. Set a cap the system can hold. If your display is 120 Hz but the game repeatedly falls from 100 to 70 FPS, a lower cap that remains stable may feel better. Leave enough headroom for combat effects instead of setting the cap at a rate reached only in quiet scenes.

Choosing V-Sync with VRR

With a G-SYNC-style VRR setup, NVIDIA describes V-SYNC enabled together with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency as a way to keep output below the refresh ceiling and avoid tearing. This approach can add slightly more latency than uncapped Reflex, but it gives a cleaner image when the cap is correctly below the panel limit.

Without VRR, disabling V-SYNC generally minimizes latency, at the cost of possible tearing. Enabling V-SYNC without a stable frame rate can instead add queueing and make camera or dodge input feel delayed. If you use a cap, keep it below the display’s maximum so the synchronization method does not have to intervene constantly.

Reduce the settings that create combat spikes

Change one group of options at a time and retest the same demanding scene. The goal is not to make every slider low; it is to remove the options that create uneven frame delivery while preserving image quality that does not affect responsiveness.

Option When to lower it Typical trade-off
Ray tracing First, when GPU utilization is near its limit or frame times jump around lighting-heavy scenes Less accurate reflections, shadows or global illumination, depending on the game.
Shadows When outdoor scenes or many dynamic lights cause drops Less detailed or shorter-range shadows.
Volumetrics and fog When smoke, mist, weather or god rays cause spikes Flatter atmospheric effects.
Reflections When water, polished floors or large interiors are expensive Lower reflection quality or update rate.
Post-processing When motion blur, depth of field or screen-space effects are costly or obscure targets A cleaner but less cinematic image.
Anti-aliasing When the GPU is limited and other changes are insufficient More jagged edges or shimmering. AMD documents that higher anti-aliasing levels reduce FPS.
Textures Only when VRAM pressure causes stutter, streaming pauses or severe hitching Blurrier surfaces; lowering textures unnecessarily wastes image quality.

If GPU memory is sufficient, keep textures high and lower the effects that consume rendering time. If stutter appears while turning the camera, texture streaming or VRAM exhaustion may be the exception: reduce texture quality, streaming distance or a similar memory-related option and test again.

Use the latency features that match your GPU

NVIDIA Reflex and driver Ultra Low Latency

Enable the game’s native NVIDIA Reflex option whenever it is available. NVIDIA defines Reflex as synchronizing GPU and CPU work to reduce system latency and produce faster input-to-screen response. Native Reflex is generally the first choice because the game can coordinate its render queue more directly.

If Reflex is unavailable, NVIDIA identifies the driver’s Ultra Low Latency Mode as the next option. Do not stack several queue-reduction modes blindly; test one configuration at a time and keep the setting that delivers stable frame times without introducing stutter.

AMD Radeon Anti-Lag, Boost and Chill

Enable Radeon Anti-Lag when reducing input-to-display delay is the priority. AMD describes Anti-Lag as dynamically adjusting frame timing to reduce the lag between user input and visual response, with the strongest benefit in GPU-limited scenarios.

Radeon Boost can dynamically reduce resolution during movement to improve performance. It is useful when a short-lived resolution reduction is preferable to a frame-time spike during a camera turn or evasive move.

Radeon Chill regulates frame rate for power or temperature control, but AMD documents that Chill disables or cannot interoperate with Anti-Lag and Boost. Choose the feature that matches your goal: Anti-Lag or Boost for responsiveness and motion performance, Chill for regulation rather than minimum latency.

AMD’s Anti-Lag support material was updated February 28, 2025. One related support article uses AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.9.1 for its screenshots; driver labels and feature behavior can differ in later releases, so verify the current control-panel wording on your installation.

Handle frame generation carefully

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. NVIDIA Smooth Motion, for example, inserts an inferred frame between rendered frames. This can make camera movement look smoother, but it does not replace the input responsiveness provided by a higher native render rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stabilize the native render rate first with a sustainable cap and sensible quality settings.
  2. Enable frame generation only if the base game already feels responsive and frame delivery is consistent.
  3. Check for artifacts around fast-moving weapons, particles and foliage.
  4. Do not use NVIDIA native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion together; NVIDIA warns against combining them.

If the native rate is too low or frame times are erratic, generated frames can make the counter look better while dodge and parry timing still feels poor. Treat frame generation as an optional presentation improvement after the fundamentals are correct.

Build a controller layout for defensive timing

Use the game’s native remapping system first. The key requirement is that you can move with the left stick while reaching dodge, block or parry without releasing movement or losing control of the camera.

Practical starting layout

Control area Suggested action Reason
Left stick Movement; press for sprint toggle if supported Keeps movement continuous and can reduce repeated holds.
Right stick Camera; press for lock-on or camera reset according to the game’s defaults Lets you manage targeting without moving a hand away from the camera.
Shoulder buttons or triggers Block/parry, heavy attack or weapon skill These controls are easy to reach during a timing-sensitive exchange.
Face buttons Light attack, dodge/jump, interact and item/use Arrange the defensive action where your thumb can reach it without confusion.

Keep attack and interact actions distinct when the game allows it; accidental interaction during a combo is more disruptive than a slightly slower menu action. Put lock-on where it can be pressed without losing camera control. Games with weapon wheels, stance systems or dedicated jump buttons may require a different arrangement, so treat this as a starting point rather than a universal prescription.

Toggle versus hold

Use a sprint toggle when repeated holds cause hand fatigue or make it harder to reach a defensive button. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends remappable actions, individually adjustable analog sensitivity and toggles for sustained actions. A toggle is not automatically better: if a game uses sprint cancellation as part of combat, a hold may provide more deliberate control.

Set deadzone and sensitivity without adding drift

Deadzone is the range around stick center that the game ignores. A smaller inner deadzone improves small camera or movement adjustments until the physical stick begins reporting movement at rest. Because stick wear, firmware calibration and controller models differ, there is no safe universal number.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
  1. Reset to the game default. This gives you a known baseline and avoids carrying over a correction designed for another controller.
  2. Lower the inner deadzone in small increments. After each change, leave the stick untouched and watch for camera rotation or character movement.
  3. Stop at the first sign of drift, then raise it one step. The correct setting is the smallest value that remains still when your hands are off the stick.
  4. Adjust right-stick sensitivity separately. Increase sensitivity if the camera is sluggish but drift-free. Reduce it if small thumb movements make aiming or target tracking twitchy.
  5. Test a repeatable motion. Circle a training target, pan across a fixed object or perform the same lock-on and dodge sequence after every change.

Steam Input exposes deadzone, anti-deadzone buffer, smoothing, sensitivity and axis-inversion controls. Many games apply their own deadzones as well. Avoid applying a large anti-deadzone in Steam Input while also using a large in-game correction: the two layers can amplify tiny stick errors and create an abrupt response near center.

Response-curve choices

If the camera feels slow only near the center, a modest response-curve adjustment can give finer control at low movement while preserving faster turns at the edge. If the camera feels twitchy, reduce sensitivity or add a small amount of response-curve dampening where the game offers it. Do not remove more deadzone to solve a sensitivity problem; deadzone controls unwanted center movement, while sensitivity controls how quickly a deliberate movement turns the camera.

Choose a profile for your priority

Priority Graphics profile Controller profile Compromise
Lowest practical latency VRR on, sustainable cap, Reflex or Anti-Lag, heavy effects reduced Low drift-free deadzone, moderate-to-high camera sensitivity, reachable dodge/parry Lower visual quality and possible tearing if VRR is unavailable.
Clean, tear-free image VRR on, cap below refresh, V-SYNC on in the described VRR configuration Stable sensitivity with a little more smoothing if needed Slightly more latency than an uncapped Reflex configuration.
Maximum image quality High textures, ray tracing and effects retained until the cap cannot hold Default deadzone and carefully tuned sensitivity More frequent frame-time spikes and less consistent defensive timing.
Power or temperature control Use a conservative cap; Radeon Chill where its compatibility trade-off is acceptable Toggle sprint and remap high-frequency actions Chill is not compatible with Anti-Lag or Boost according to AMD.

Troubleshoot common combat-feel problems

The game looks smooth but dodges still feel late

  • Check whether the cap is actually stable during combat rather than only in menus.
  • On supported NVIDIA hardware, try native Reflex; otherwise test Ultra Low Latency Mode.
  • On AMD hardware, test Anti-Lag in a GPU-limited scene.
  • Lower ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics or reflections before sacrificing textures.
  • Check for an overly large controller deadzone or a heavily smoothed Steam Input profile.

The frame counter is high but motion stutters

  • Use a lower cap that the busiest scene can sustain.
  • Look for VRAM-related texture streaming; reduce textures or streaming distance only if memory pressure is evident.
  • Disable or reduce frame generation temporarily to determine whether artifacts or uneven base frames are being hidden.
  • Retest after shader compilation or asset streaming has completed if the game performs those tasks during play.

The camera moves by itself

  • Raise the inner deadzone one step and test again.
  • Check both the game’s deadzone and Steam Input’s deadzone; correct drift in one layer rather than stacking large corrections.
  • Recalibrate the controller firmware or operating-system device settings if available.

The image tears

  • Enable VRR on the display and in the driver when both support it.
  • Use a cap below the refresh ceiling.
  • If VRR is unavailable, choose between V-SYNC for a cleaner image and V-SYNC off for lower latency with possible tearing.

Menus show the wrong button prompts

Native remapping usually preserves the game’s expected input prompts better than an external layer. If Steam Input is necessary, verify that the game recognizes the selected controller layout and that an overlay or action layer has not replaced the intended bindings.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

Reflex, Anti-Lag, refresh rate, synchronization and frame-time guidance explain why these settings can improve responsiveness, but there is no universal cross-game latency figure that applies to every action RPG. Your result depends on the game engine, display scanout, controller, driver, cap, CPU/GPU workload and the exact scene. Treat the settings above as a controlled tuning method, then keep the profile that remains stable during the attacks and camera movements you actually find difficult.
