There is no single best Google Maps replacement for every driver. For iPhone users who want Apple-device integration and downloadable maps, Apple Maps is a natural first choice. Waze is a better fit for drivers who value community traffic and incident reports and can stay connected. HERE WeGo and TomTom GO are worth comparing when offline maps and route guidance matter. Check coverage and feature availability where you drive before choosing.
Which Google Maps alternative should you try?
| App | Best reason to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Maps | iPhone integration, driving directions, offline maps and CarPlay directions | Apple says features vary by country or region; confirm the features and map coverage you need locally. |
| Waze | Community reports and connected traffic information | It needs internet access to locate or navigate a route, and map quality depends partly on local community participation. |
| HERE WeGo | Downloadable maps, driving directions, route stops and CarPlay support | Use offline mode for offline navigation; check whether the car-display features you need are available. |
| TomTom GO Navigation | Downloaded maps, offline route planning, traffic updates and alternative routes | These are features described by TomTom; check current app availability, price and feature access. |
What matters most when comparing navigation apps?
Compare the specific jobs you need the app to do, rather than relying on a broad claim that one service is more accurate. Consider whether it can calculate a route offline, how maps are downloaded and refreshed, whether traffic and incident reports need data, support for CarPlay or Android Auto, travel modes, route stops and preferences, and current cost. Local map coverage and the activity of community reporters can affect what an app offers on a particular trip.

Which alternatives work offline?
Apple Maps
Apple Maps supports downloadable maps and turn-by-turn driving directions on iPhone. Apple also documents directions through CarPlay. Feature availability can differ by country or region, so check the options available where you drive in Apple’s iPhone Maps guidance.

HERE WeGo
HERE WeGo supports downloaded maps and describes how to switch to offline mode if an online route loses connectivity. Its help documentation also covers multiple stops; its App Store listing describes driving directions and CarPlay support. Consult HERE’s routing and navigation help and the listing for your device to check current details.
TomTom GO Navigation
TomTom describes GO Navigation as supporting downloadable maps and offline route planning, alongside traffic updates and alternative routes. TomTom’s product page, published July 15, 2021, claimed map coverage in “150+ countries and regions” and weekly map updates. Treat those as TomTom’s dated vendor claims, not independently audited coverage or a guarantee about current availability; check the app’s current listing and the coverage for your destination at TomTom’s GO Navigation announcement.

Waze
Waze is not a reliable choice for disconnected route guidance: Google’s help says it cannot locate or navigate a route without an internet connection. Downloading another app’s maps does not make Waze’s live community reports available offline. For a trip where service may drop, confirm that your chosen app can calculate and guide the route without data before departure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow does Waze compare for traffic and road reports?
Waze’s defining feature is information shared by its driver community. Google says users can report traffic, crashes, blocked roads, weather and other conditions. That connected approach can be useful when there is active local participation, but the quantity and quality of map information can vary with the community in an area. Waze is designed for private cars, motorcycles and taxis, and its route guidance requires internet access.

Quick Recap
How should you choose for your own trips?
- Start with your device. If you use an iPhone and want Apple integration, try Apple Maps first. If you want connected community reports, consider Waze. For downloaded maps and offline guidance, compare Apple Maps, HERE WeGo and TomTom GO.
- Check the route, not just the app description. Confirm that maps cover your destination and that the features you rely on—such as route stops, CarPlay or a particular travel mode—are available in your region and on your device.
- Prepare for poor reception. Download the required maps in advance and verify offline behavior in the app. Offline guidance does not mean live traffic or new community reports will continue without a data connection.
- Test before an important drive. Try the app on familiar routes, check how it handles the stops and preferences you use, and review current app-store availability and pricing before settling on it.
