A room code is an identifier players enter to find or request access to a game session. An invite link can take a player toward a particular game or destination and may carry launch context, reducing manual steps when the platform and app handle the link correctly. Neither one makes a lobby private by itself: the game still needs to decide who may join. For many games, offering both a link and a readable code fallback is the most flexible approach.
What is the difference between a room code and an invite link?
A room code is information a player shares and another player types into the game. The game uses that identifier to locate a room, party, or match and then applies its admission rules. An invite link is something a player can open or tap; depending on the platform, it can direct them to a game or specific experience and pass additional information about the intended join.

These are different ways to get a player to a session, not different guarantees of privacy. A code can be copied or forwarded, and so can a link. Access depends on the game’s session settings and admission checks.

| How the player joins | The host shares the code; the recipient enters it manually. Apple’s Game Center guidance recommends showing the current code and supporting manual entry. | The recipient opens or taps the link. Whether it opens the right app and destination depends on platform and app link handling. |
| What it can identify or carry | Typically identifies a room or party that the game resolves. Apple GameKit describes a game creating a unique party code and including it in match requests. | Can identify a destination and may carry launch data used to route or personalize the experience. |
| Sharing across devices | Can be read aloud, pasted into chat, or entered on another device. | Convenient to tap on a supported device, but behavior may vary if the app is not installed or link handling is unsupported. |
| Privacy and admission | Knowing the code should not be the only access control; the game should check whether the player may join. | A forwarded link should not bypass the same admission checks. The host or game should retain authority over joining. |
| Common failure to handle | Wrong, expired, or full-room codes require a useful error and a way to obtain a current code. | The link may fail to open the intended app or preserve its context; provide an alternate route, such as a code or in-game invite. |
The usability and security distinctions in this table are practical design implications, not the results of a head-to-head study. The reviewed platform documentation does not establish comparative success rates or prove that either method is inherently safer.

How room codes work in practice
The game generates or obtains a unique identifier, displays it to the host, and lets other players submit it to request a match or room. Apple GameKit documents this pattern for party codes: a game can create a code, include it in match requests, share it with invited players, and submit requests from players who enter the code. The sharing interface and the code’s exact format are up to the game implementation.
Apple’s Game Center design guidance says generated alphanumeric party codes are typically eight characters and gives “2MP4-9CMF” as an example. That is Apple-specific guidance, not a universal code standard or a security guarantee. A short, readable code is useful only if the game can resolve it reliably and enforce its own session rules.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Tera Raid Battles provide a player-facing example. Nintendo’s support guide describes a host choosing “Invite friends with Link Code” and sharing the code; recipients choose Link Code and enter it. The guide also offers ways to browse available raids or select a random raid without a code, illustrating that a code is one join route rather than a requirement for every multiplayer session.

How invite links work in practice
A link can spare a player from manually finding a game or entering a room identifier. If platform and app support are in place, the link can route the player toward a destination and may include launch information that gives the game context for the invitation.

Implementation details matter. Roblox documents deep links that can direct users to a place and pass launch data, but its documentation marks that deep-link process as deprecated for public deep links and directs developers to share links instead. Developers should not treat the legacy public deep-link process as the recommended sharing method. Roblox also documents player invite prompts that can carry launch data to route or personalize an invited friend’s experience; its guidance says launch data may take a few seconds to arrive, so a game should wait before relying on it.

No. A code can make an invitation less discoverable than an openly listed session, but anyone who obtains or receives the code may be able to try it. A link can also be forwarded. Neither the code nor the link should be treated as proof that a player is authorized.

Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation distinguishes session visibility—who can read or write session data—from joinability—who can join. Those settings are not interchangeable. Microsoft also describes an invite race in which an invitee receives an invitation before a reservation exists, so a join attempt can fail. Its guidance recommends that the host or title retain final authority to admit players and manage stale invitations; for common invite flows it recommends open session visibility to avoid reservation race conditions, while recommending invite-only party joinability for a private game party. These are Xbox platform semantics and guidance, not universal settings to copy without understanding another platform’s model.
For a player, the practical takeaway is that “private” depends on the game’s actual lobby rules, not on whether the invitation arrived as text or a link. For a developer, keep the admission decision in the game or trusted session service, and make the room’s current state clear: whether it is accepting players, full, expired, or restricted.
What should a game do when an invitation fails?
- For a code: Explain whether it is invalid, expired, or the room is full. Show the current code in the game and provide a way to request or copy it again.
- For a link: Provide a route to the game or experience if direct app opening fails. A manual code or in-game invite can serve as a fallback when the recipient is on another device or link handling does not work.
- For either method: Handle invitations that arrive late, point to a closed session, or are used by someone the host should not admit. Do not leave players with an ambiguous loading state when the session is unavailable.
- For launch context: Do not assume link or invite data is available immediately. Roblox’s invite guidance specifically cautions that launch data may take a few seconds to arrive.
Choosing an invitation flow
Use the route that fits how players find one another and how the game handles platform integration. A link is a natural primary option when the platform can reliably open the intended game and destination. A code is useful when players need to read, paste, or manually enter an identifier—especially across devices or when a link cannot be opened. Supporting both lets a player choose the route that works without making either route the access-control mechanism.
For developers evaluating a code-based architecture, Room Codes’ v1 API documentation describes one vendor-specific approach: rooms are provisioned server-side, players share a code, and tokens have scopes for requesting, joining, or extending rooms. The documentation says the API key must stay out of client-facing code; in that documented version, the first client to join becomes host and a host disconnect immediately closes the room. These lifecycle rules are properties of that service’s documented version, not general properties of room codes.
