Best games to play after Metaphor: ReFantazio for character-driven RPGs

Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the closest continuation of Metaphor: ReFantazio’s character bonds, everyday-life interludes and turn-based RPG rhythm. Pick Persona 3 Reload for a darker, tighter school-year story; Fire Emblem: Three Houses when tactical battles and route choice matter as much as the cast; or Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for a sweeping fantasy-war journey built around a large party.

These games do not duplicate Metaphor’s setting or combat system. They preserve different parts of its appeal—relationship progression, party identity, personal growth, strategic battles or a long-form ensemble story—so the right choice depends on which element you want more of.

Why Metaphor: ReFantazio makes the next game difficult to choose

Metaphor: ReFantazio combines two kinds of role-playing game that are rarely balanced so deliberately. Its fantasy story follows the United Kingdom of Euchronia after the king’s death, when a royal tournament turns political conflict into a personal journey. At the same time, its party members, daily decisions and relationship progression create the intimate rhythm associated with Atlus’ Persona games.

Atlus presents the game as coming from the creators of Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5. The official premise also frames the central conflict around people confronting anxiety. That combination explains why a conventional fantasy RPG may feel too impersonal after the credits: the attraction is not only the world or the battles, but the sense that every companion has a point of view, a history and a reason to change.

The recommendations below are organized by the part of Metaphor you want to retain. Platform listings, editions, physical stock and prices change by region, so verify the current store page before buying. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing currently describes Metaphor as an award-winning fantasy RPG, reports a Metascore of 94 and says it has received more than 50 prestigious awards; those are publisher-store claims and may change with the live listing.

Quick comparison

Game Best for Character engine Combat and structure Main trade-off
Persona 5 Royal Closest social-RPG match Friendships, romances and daily activities Turn-based combat with a calendar and dungeon schedule Modern school setting instead of a fantasy road trip
Persona 3 Reload Darker, more intimate drama Fixed-year bonds and personal growth Turn-based combat organized around a time-boxed school year Smaller, more concentrated scope
Fire Emblem: Three Houses Tactical character drama House choice, support conversations and student development Grid-based battles alternating with monastery planning More route branching, less unified road narrative
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Large fantasy ensemble Party bonds formed under wartime pressure Real-time party combat across a long journey Little social simulation and no turn-based system
Yakuza: Like a Dragon Charismatic found-family story Ichiban Kasuga and a strongly defined party Turn-based urban RPG structure Contemporary crime setting and series context

1. Persona 5 Royal: the closest overall follow-up

Persona 5 Royal is the safest first recommendation because it most closely reproduces the cadence that many Metaphor players miss: spend time with people, make a meaningful daily choice, improve a relationship and then take that growing team into turn-based supernatural battles.

What carries over from Metaphor

  • Relationships are a central progression system. The game gives you explicit relationship development rather than treating companions as background dialogue. Friendships, romances and optional storylines all make time management part of character growth.
  • The ensemble has a shared identity. The group is defined by the obstacles it faces together, so personal arcs feed into the larger mystery instead of existing as isolated side quests.
  • Combat is turn-based and stylish. Encounters reward planning and exploiting enemy weaknesses, making the social layer feel connected to the battle layer rather than bolted on.
  • Everyday life matters. School, city activities and conversations provide a deliberate contrast with supernatural exploration, much as Metaphor contrasts ordinary travel moments with its political crisis.

The official Persona 5 Royal site describes the series as modern-day Japan stories that confront everyday realities—friendships and romances included—alongside supernatural themes. Its PlayStation description says players meet dozens of characters in an interconnected story with optional dialogue, decisions and storylines.

Where it differs

This is a contemporary, school-centered story. You are not crossing a fantasy kingdom or competing in a royal tournament, and the calendar is tied to urban routines rather than a road journey. The emotional overlap is strongest in its themes of friendship, identity and personal growth; the setting and presentation are intentionally different.

Choose it if…

  • You want the most recognizable relationship-and-calendar loop after Metaphor.
  • You prefer a large ensemble with optional bonds and romance.
  • You are happy to trade fantasy politics for modern Japan and supernatural urban mystery.

2. Persona 3 Reload: a darker story in a fixed year

Choose Persona 3 Reload when Metaphor’s character writing appealed to you but you want a more melancholy, concentrated experience. Its drama is organized around a fixed school year, so the advancing calendar creates a stronger sense of pressure than a broad, open-ended journey.

What makes its character focus different

  • Time is the dramatic engine. The school-year structure gives every bond a clear context: characters grow while an unavoidable deadline approaches.
  • The tone is more subdued. Personal loss, uncertainty and the cost of confronting the unknown shape the emotional register, making this a darker choice than Persona 5 Royal.
  • The cast is intimate rather than sprawling. The story concentrates on how a defined group changes over one period instead of presenting a wide travelogue.
  • Persona combat remains familiar. It modernizes the series’ turn-based battles while preserving the link between daily decisions and dungeon preparation.

How it compares with Metaphor

Persona 3 Reload shares the social and combat DNA that Metaphor inherited, but its dramatic arc is narrower. Metaphor’s party develops while moving through a fantasy world and a political tournament; Persona 3 Reload builds tension through a school calendar and a steadily advancing year. If you want every relationship to feel pressed by time, its tighter scope is an advantage. If you want a broad road story with frequent changes of place, it may feel deliberately contained.

Choose it if…

  • You want the darkest emotional tone in this list.
  • You like stories that make the calendar itself part of the conflict.
  • You prefer a focused arc over a very large social sandbox.

3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses: when tactics and relationships must matter equally

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the best alternative when the part of Metaphor you valued most was watching a team change through shared decisions—and then testing that team in demanding battles. Its defining choice comes early: you teach one of three student houses, and that decision changes the campaign’s route and perspective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monastery-to-battle loop

  1. Manage the monastery. Between missions, you choose activities, develop students and strengthen relationships through instruction and support conversations.
  2. Build a house. Training priorities, individual talents and the students you recruit shape which roles your army can fill.
  3. Commit to a route. The house you select determines the campaign’s viewpoint and contributes to substantial route-level differences.
  4. Fight on a grid. Missions use turn-based tactical maps, where positioning, terrain, unit roles and objective management matter more than exploiting a turn-order system.

Why the cast works

Named students are not interchangeable units. Support conversations reveal personal histories, conflicts and ambitions, while development choices affect how each student contributes in battle. The result is a direct relationship between characterization and tactics: learning who a character is also helps you decide how to train and deploy them.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The trade-off against Metaphor

Three Houses offers stronger route branching and more explicit strategic planning, but its structure is less like a single road narrative. The monastery-and-mission rhythm can feel segmented compared with Metaphor’s continuous travel, and grid tactics replace Metaphor’s turn-order and synthesis approach. Choose it when route perspective and battlefield decisions are as important as conversational bonds.

Choose it if…

  • You want your relationship choices to affect a tactical campaign.
  • You enjoy teaching, customizing and positioning a roster.
  • You are willing to replay or revisit routes to see different political perspectives.

4. Xenoblade Chronicles 3: a party-first fantasy war story

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 fits readers who want to stay in a large fantasy world with a party whose bonds are forged by conflict, but who do not need a social-simulation calendar. Its story centers on a world trapped in perpetual war for reasons most combatants have forgotten.

What to expect from the party

  • Shared danger drives intimacy. Relationships develop while the group confronts the systems that keep the war going, giving the ensemble a common external pressure.
  • The journey is expansive. The scale is closer to a long fantasy expedition than to a school timetable or a compact campaign route.
  • Character identity stays central. The appeal comes from seeing a large cast respond differently to the same conflict and gradually form trust.

Combat and structure

Combat is real-time and action-oriented rather than turn-based. You manage a party during live encounters instead of selecting actions from a fixed turn order, so the strategic challenge comes from timing, positioning and coordinating roles in motion. There is no Persona-style calendar of daily activities or social-link loop; its character work is embedded in the journey and the war narrative.

  • You prefer a broad party journey and can accept real-time combat.
  • You want bonds formed under large-scale political and military pressure.

5. Yakuza: Like a Dragon: a contemporary found-family alternative

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is an adjacent pick for readers who care most about a charismatic lead and a party that feels like a found family. Its central figure, Ichiban Kasuga, anchors a strongly defined group whose relationships give the story its momentum.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The setting is contemporary and crime-focused, so it does not reproduce Metaphor’s fantasy politics or Persona’s school life. Its combat is turn-based, which makes it a useful option if you want menu-driven battles but are open to an urban RPG structure and the context of a longer series. Choose it for the cast’s chemistry rather than for a matching setting or social-calendar system.

6. Trails of Cold Steel: for long-form school-linked character dynamics

Trails of Cold Steel belongs on the shortlist when you want a large ensemble, school-linked relationships and an epic commitment that unfolds over multiple games. Its appeal is the way personal dynamics accumulate across a broad political story, making it suitable for readers who enjoyed seeing Metaphor’s companions develop in the shadow of national conflict.

This is a different kind of commitment from a single self-contained journey. The attraction is continuity: character connections and political consequences gain weight over a longer series structure. Consider it when you want more time with an ensemble and are comfortable with a larger narrative investment.

A darker emotional register Persona 3 Reload The fixed school year and melancholy tone create a concentrated dramatic arc.
Battlefield strategy and route choice Fire Emblem: Three Houses House selection changes the campaign, while grid battles make planning central.
A fantasy party journey Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Its ensemble forms under perpetual war in a broad fantasy adventure.
A lovable found family in a modern setting Yakuza: Like a Dragon Ichiban and his party drive a character-first urban RPG.
An epic, school-linked ensemble across a longer series Trails of Cold Steel Character dynamics and political consequences build over multiple entries.

What each recommendation preserves—and what it changes

Relationship progression

Persona 5 Royal offers the clearest continuation of explicit social progression. Persona 3 Reload keeps the bond system but compresses its emotional movement into one year. Three Houses turns relationships into support conversations and development choices. Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Trails of Cold Steel place more of the relationship work inside the main journey and party narrative.

Party identity

All six games give companions distinct motivations, but they use different engines. Persona games build identity through optional time spent together; Three Houses combines personal arcs with teaching and deployment; Xenoblade Chronicles 3 uses shared wartime danger; Yakuza emphasizes a charismatic leader and found family; Trails of Cold Steel lets dynamics accumulate over a longer political saga.

Combat expectations

Only Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload and Yakuza: Like a Dragon stay broadly within turn-based RPG territory. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is also turn-based, but its grid tactics make positioning and unit composition the central concerns. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is real-time, so it is the least mechanically similar to Metaphor even though its party writing and fantasy scale can feel familiar.

A practical play order

  1. Begin with Persona 5 Royal. It is the closest structural match for Metaphor’s character-bond rhythm.
  2. Move to Persona 3 Reload if you want more intensity. Its fixed-year structure and darker tone provide a deliberate contrast.
  3. Choose Three Houses when you want agency over the campaign. The house decision changes your perspective and your tactical roster.
  4. Try Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for a setting reset. It keeps the fantasy ensemble while replacing social simulation and turn-based combat with a real-time war journey.
  5. Add the adjacent picks according to tolerance for series context. Yakuza: Like a Dragon suits a modern found-family story; Trails of Cold Steel suits a longer, school-linked epic.

Buying and platform checks

Availability is not static. Before purchasing any of these games, confirm the platform, regional edition, language options, downloadable-content details, physical stock and current price on the store serving your country. A listing for one console or a later edition does not establish availability everywhere, and promotional pricing may be temporary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Metaphor itself, the Nintendo Switch 2 store page is a useful example of why checking the live listing matters: its score and awards language are publisher-store claims tied to that page and date, not permanent technical specifications. Apply the same caution to every recommendation here.

Bottom line

Persona 5 Royal is the best first game after Metaphor: ReFantazio for most character-focused RPG players because it preserves the strongest combination of relationships, daily-life choices, ensemble writing and turn-based combat. Persona 3 Reload is the sharper choice for melancholy and intimacy; Fire Emblem: Three Houses for tactical route-driven drama; and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for a sweeping fantasy party story. The adjacent Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Trails of Cold Steel picks are worthwhile when you want the cast to remain the main reason to keep playing, even if the setting or structure changes.
