What makes Elden Ring difficult to replace?
Elden Ring sets an unusually broad baseline. Bandai Namco describes it as featuring “vast fantastical landscapes and shadowy, complex dungeons that are connected seamlessly.” You can travel on foot or horseback, choose your own route, play alone or online, and build around different weapons, magic and skills. Stealth, summons and precise defensive timing all matter, so a well-timed dodge or parry can change the result of a fight.
That creates several different things people mean when they ask for a game “like Elden Ring”:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- World scale and continuity: a large map that leads naturally into caves, ruins, roads and major dungeons.
- Danger during travel: exploration itself can produce ambushes, detours and fights rather than functioning only as a route between quests.
- Combat pressure: demanding timing, readable enemy patterns and bosses that punish careless attacks.
- Build freedom: meaningful choices among weapons, magic, skills, equipment and play styles.
- Discovery: environmental clues and optional encounters that reward curiosity instead of sending you through a single prescribed order.
- Narrative texture: either cryptic environmental storytelling or a strongly authored story with characters and consequences.
The recommendations below separate those qualities instead of pretending that one game is a perfect substitute.
Quick comparison: which Elden Ring alternative fits you?
| Game | Best match for | World structure | Combat and build identity | Main compromise for an Elden Ring fan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Unplanned journeys and dangerous open-world discovery | Large, seamless open world | Action combat with a party structure and room to improvise | Its combat and companions do not follow Elden Ring’s Soulslike design |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition | Story-rich exploration and consequential quests | Large open world organized around authored regions and quests | Monster-hunting combat supported by elixirs and blade oils | Combat is less timing-strict and less build-open than Elden Ring |
| Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom | Experimentation, traversal puzzles and self-directed discovery | Vast open worlds built around systemic interaction | Flexible action systems and environmental problem-solving | Generally less punishing and not a direct Soulslike match |
| Lies of P: Complete Edition | Demanding, focused Soulslike encounters | Dense, authored and comparatively linear areas | Timing-based combat, weapon combinations and Legion Arms | It does not offer Elden Ring’s seamless open-world wandering |
| Nioh 2 | Technical combat, stances, loot and specialization | Mission-based levels rather than one continuous world | Fast combat with deep weapon and build optimization | Travel and discovery are structured around missions |
These are editorial fits rather than an objective ranking. No authoritative statistic establishes a single “closest” game, because each title preserves a different part of Elden Ring’s appeal.
1. Dragon’s Dogma 2: the strongest open-world exploration fit
Pick Dragon’s Dogma 2 when your favorite Elden Ring moments happen between major bosses: taking an unfamiliar road, seeing a landmark in the distance, being interrupted by a dangerous encounter and improvising a way through. GameSpot places it among the closest options for an open world in which the journey matters as much as the destination.

Why its exploration feels adjacent to Elden Ring
- Travel is the activity: the large map encourages you to move through it rather than simply selecting a quest marker and fast-forwarding to the objective.
- Risk is part of the route: encounters can turn an ordinary crossing into an unscripted problem, which gives detours and preparation real weight.
- Improvisation is rewarded: you can respond to threats with the tools and party setup you brought instead of relying on one fixed solution.
Where it differs
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not a Soulslike clone. Its combat has a different rhythm, and its party structure changes how you approach enemies, positioning and recovery. If you want solitary build experimentation, opaque lore and boss fights built around the exact dodge-or-parry pressure of Elden Ring, the match will feel partial. If you want a world that can surprise you while you are simply trying to reach the next settlement, it is the best first recommendation.
Choose it if…
- You value an uninterrupted open-world journey above a linear sequence of set pieces.
- You enjoy dangerous encounters that can change a travel plan.
- You are comfortable with a party-based combat structure that is distinct from Elden Ring.
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition: the best story-rich alternative
Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition when the question behind “what should I play after Elden Ring?” is really “what open-world game has more story, characters and consequences?” Its world is dark fantasy, but its momentum comes from authored quests and relationships rather than cryptic fragments alone.

CD PROJEKT RED describes the Continent as a place where “The morally ambiguous world of the Continent is full of delightful and dreadful encounters with complex choices and consequences.” That emphasis is the key distinction: exploration repeatedly feeds into decisions, investigations and character arcs.
What makes its world compelling
- Quest-led discovery: locations and people are tied to written storylines, so exploration often reveals a problem with social or moral consequences rather than only a combat challenge.
- Monster-hunting identity: preparation matters. Elixirs and blade oils support a combat loop built around identifying threats and choosing appropriate tools.
- Complete Edition scope: the edition includes the major expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, making it the version to check when you want the full package.
Why it is not a direct combat replacement
The Witcher 3’s combat is more forgiving and more explicitly supported by equipment and consumables than Elden Ring’s. Its appeal is the combination of a large world, monster contracts and choices that alter outcomes, not strict dodge-and-parry mastery or highly open-ended character construction.

- You want an open world with substantially more explicit dialogue and character development.
- You prefer quest chains and moral decisions to cryptic environmental storytelling.
- You are happy to trade Soulslike difficulty for a more authored adventure.
3. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom: exploration through experimentation
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are the strongest picks when “exploration” means testing the world’s systems, climbing toward an intriguing landmark and solving problems in an unexpected way. GameSpot identifies them as strong choices for a vast world and self-directed discovery.
What they preserve from Elden Ring
- Self-directed routing: you can decide what to investigate and in which order instead of following a mandatory corridor.
- Environmental curiosity: terrain, weather, structures and unusual objects invite experimentation.
- Discovery as a reward: the map is most satisfying when you pursue a visual clue or distant destination because you want to know what is there.
What changes most
Their combat is generally less punishing than Elden Ring’s, and their central challenge is systemic problem-solving rather than repeated mastery of Soulslike attack patterns. They also differ in tone and narrative delivery. Treat them as exploration matches, not as one-for-one replacements for Elden Ring’s boss pressure.
Which one should you start with?
Start with Breath of the Wild if you want the foundational open-world exploration experience. Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you specifically want a broader experimentation toolkit and are interested in building solutions from the game’s systems. Both serve the same broad need: freedom to investigate rather than a strict route through objectives.

4. Lies of P: Complete Edition: the focused Soulslike choice
Lies of P: Complete Edition is the recommendation for players who care most about demanding, timing-based encounters and a dense, authored setting. The Complete Edition combines Lies of P with the Overture expansion. Its setting, Krat, is a Belle Époque city covered in blood, giving the game a concentrated identity rather than a sprawling wilderness.

The official description emphasizes the combat approach: “Develop a unique combat style to counter vicious enemies and terrain by weaving together dynamic weapon combinations, utilizing the Legion Arms, and activating new abilities.” That sentence captures its appeal for an Elden Ring player who wants to study attacks, refine timing and tune a combat setup.
Why its combat belongs on this list
- Weapon combinations: the system encourages deliberate experimentation with how attacks and components work together.
- Legion Arms: these add another layer of tactical choice beyond ordinary weapon swings.
- Authored pressure: enemies and terrain are arranged in a denser, more controlled structure, so the challenge is concentrated rather than dispersed across a huge map.
- Character choices: decisions between lying and telling the truth contribute to the game’s identity and consequences.
The trade-off for open-world fans
Lies of P is more linear and enclosed than Elden Ring. You will not get the same feeling of choosing a distant horizon, circling a region on horseback or discovering a completely optional route across a seamless landscape. Its strength is deliberate encounter design, not free-form travel.
Choose it if…
- Your priority is combat timing and boss pressure.
- You prefer a crafted city and clear progression to a sprawling map.
- You want Soulslike mechanics without requiring another enormous open-world commitment.
5. Nioh 2: the deepest technical combat alternative
Choose Nioh 2 when you enjoy the combat laboratory inside Elden Ring more than its map. GameSpot describes the Nioh games as Team Ninja’s combination of fast, intense action and Soulslike mechanics. Nioh 2 adds a level of weapon, stance, timing and loot specialization that rewards players who enjoy optimizing a build and learning a demanding system.
What makes Nioh 2 distinctive
- Fast combat: the pace is more aggressive than Elden Ring’s measured spacing, so reactions and offensive decisions arrive quickly.
- Technical specialization: weapon choices, stances and equipment interactions give you many ways to tune how a character functions.
- Build optimization: loot and configuration are central pleasures for players who like comparing options and refining a setup.
The structural difference you must accept
Nioh 2 uses mission-based levels rather than one seamless open world. You select an area, complete its objectives and return to a broader mission structure instead of roaming continuously across a single landscape. That makes it a poor substitute for Elden Ring’s unmarked wandering, but an excellent one for players who want fast, technical fights and deep specialization.

Which game has the best exploration after Elden Ring?
Use the following decision path rather than treating “best” as a universal label:
- Want the closest feeling of an unpredictable journey? Start with Dragon’s Dogma 2.
- Want more story, dialogue and consequences? Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition.
- Want to experiment with the environment and solve problems your own way? Choose Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.
- Want the most concentrated Soulslike challenge? Choose Lies of P: Complete Edition.
- Want the most technical combat and equipment specialization? Choose Nioh 2.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 or The Witcher 3 after Elden Ring?
This is the most useful head-to-head for an open-world player. Pick Dragon’s Dogma 2 when the map itself is the main attraction: you want travel to generate danger, surprises and improvised encounters. Pick The Witcher 3 when you want the world to deliver written quests, monster investigations and choices with consequences.
| If you care most about… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Unplanned detours and emergent travel | Dragon’s Dogma 2 | The journey and encounters are the central attraction. |
| Character arcs and explicit narrative | The Witcher 3 | Exploration is closely tied to authored quests and consequences. |
| Soulslike combat similarity | Neither is exact | Both differ materially from Elden Ring’s combat model; consider Lies of P or Nioh 2 for a combat-first fit. |
How the alternatives compare by the features Elden Ring players notice
World structure
Dragon’s Dogma 2, The Witcher 3 and the two Zelda games provide the open-world formats in this list. Lies of P uses denser authored spaces, while Nioh 2 is mission-based. The latter two can deliver discovery within an area, but neither recreates continuous horseback-style wandering across a single connected landscape.
Combat demand
Lies of P and Nioh 2 are the closest choices when strict execution is your priority, although they demand different skills. Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers action combat with party interaction and improvisation. The Witcher 3 emphasizes preparation, elixirs and blade oils. Zelda’s combat is generally more forgiving, with difficulty coming more from situations and systems than from Soulslike boss pressure.
Exploration style
Dragon’s Dogma 2 favors dangerous travel and emergent encounters. The Witcher 3 favors quest-led exploration. Zelda favors experimentation and environmental problem-solving. Lies of P and Nioh 2 place more of their value in authored or mission-based progression than in unmarked wilderness.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Build and equipment depth
Elden Ring’s broad freedom remains unusual. Nioh 2 is the strongest alternative for players who want weapon specialization, stances and optimization. Lies of P offers weapon combinations, Legion Arms and new abilities. The other open-world choices provide flexible action systems, but their character-building philosophies are not identical to Elden Ring’s.
Narrative density
The Witcher 3 is the most explicitly story-driven recommendation. Lies of P uses a tightly authored setting and meaningful truth-versus-lie choices. Elden Ring’s influence is most visible in the preference for discovery and implication, while Zelda leans toward systemic discovery with lighter exposition and Nioh 2 prioritizes combat structure.

Bottom line: the best choice depends on the part of Elden Ring you miss
For challenging open-world exploration, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the best starting point because it makes travel itself dangerous and surprising. For a richer story, choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. For experimentation, choose Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. For focused Soulslike combat, choose Lies of P: Complete Edition; for the deepest technical weapon and build play, choose Nioh 2. None is a complete replacement, but each answers a different part of the Elden Ring question honestly.
