Its solar system resets every 22 minutes, and the official PlayStation description of its design says progress is limited by what the player learns. Outer Wilds is not a 2D Metroidvania—it is a first-person, open-world mystery—but it most clearly matches the combination of repeating time, environmental puzzles, and knowledge-gated discovery.
The Forgotten City is the stronger alternative if you prefer investigation, conversations, deduction, and moral choices. Use Echo Weaver as the anchor: its official descriptions present a knowledge-based Metroidvania in which secrets function as upgrades, while time is a resource for healing, trading, and opening routes. The games below overlap with that structure in different ways rather than reproducing its 2D platforming format.

Quick picks: which game fits your reason for searching?
| Game | How the loop works | What advances you | Best fit | Main difference from Echo Weaver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Weaver | Time is a spendable resource inside a looping world. | Secrets and learned uses of available powers reveal new progress. | Players who want 2D action-exploration where routing and rhythm matter. | This is the comparison anchor: its structure is a knowledge-based Metroidvania. |
| Outer Wilds | A solar system resets in an endless cycle; PlayStation Blog describes a 22-minute loop. | Understanding the world and retaining information between cycles. | Environmental discovery, open-ended exploration, and realizing how places connect. | It is a first-person, open-world solar-system mystery rather than a 2D platformer. |
| The Forgotten City | The player exploits a deadly time loop. | Exploration, deduction, questioning an interconnected community, and choices. | Character-led investigation and moral dilemmas. | Its emphasis is social mystery and deduction, not movement-focused Metroidvania play. |
There is no sourced head-to-head score, completion-time comparison, or similarity percentage for these games. The useful distinction is mechanical: Outer Wilds most directly matches knowledge-gated exploration, while The Forgotten City matches the investigative side of a loop.
What makes Echo Weaver the reference point?
The official Steam listing calls Echo Weaver a knowledge-based Metroidvania. That wording changes what “games like” should mean here. A conventional Metroidvania usually signals a map, movement abilities, and collectible upgrades. Echo Weaver instead frames secrets themselves as upgrades: learning what a place, power, or route means is part of the progression system.

Knowledge is the upgrade economy
In Echo Weaver, finding information is not merely optional lore. The publisher describes secrets as upgrades, so discovery can expand what you are able to do or where you can go. This creates a different question from “Which item increases my statistics?” You are instead asking, “What have I learned that changes the set of possible routes?” That is the quality to look for in a substitute.
Time is something you spend
The same official description presents time as a resource used for healing, trading, and unlocking routes. A loop therefore has an economic dimension: spending time on one action can leave less time for another, and a route may become worthwhile only after you understand its timing. This is distinct from a loop that exists only to reset a story scene. The cycle itself is part of the planning problem.
Routing and rhythm matter more than raw reflexes
Akupara Games’ publisher page emphasizes routing and rhythm over raw reflexes. That makes Echo Weaver a useful test for recommendations: a game can have a time loop and still feel unlike it if the loop is mainly a dialogue gimmick or a linear puzzle sequence. Outer Wilds and The Forgotten City qualify for different reasons, but neither should be marketed as a direct 2D equivalent.

The loop is the organizing rule of the world
PlayStation describes Outer Wilds as an open-world mystery set in a solar system trapped in an endless time loop. A 2019 PlayStation Blog article specifies a 22-minute cycle and explains that locations can change as time progresses. The reset is therefore not simply a failure screen. It is the clock that determines what you can observe, when you can observe it, and which lead is worth pursuing next.

Knowledge, not an inventory, is the progression gate
The strongest evidence for similarity is PlayStation Blog’s explanation that progression through Outer Wilds is limited by the player’s knowledge. Once you understand a fact, you can apply it on a later cycle without needing to collect a new physical key. That is the same broad design promise that makes Echo Weaver’s secrets function as upgrades: information expands the route map.
PlayStation’s editorial advice is unusually direct: “Progression through the world of Outer Wilds is only limited by the player’s knowledge.” The article recommends avoiding watching other people play before trying it yourself because discoveries are the progression. For a spoiler-light experience, treat that advice seriously.
Where the match stops
Outer Wilds is first-person and open-world, with a solar-system scale rather than a 2D interconnected platforming map. Its challenges are environmental and spatial; Echo Weaver is framed around Metroidvania routing, rhythm, and the deliberate use of time for healing, trading, and route access. Choose Outer Wilds for the underlying loop-and-learning relationship, not for identical movement or combat.

Who should choose it
- Choose Outer Wilds if your favorite Echo Weaver idea is realizing that a previously inaccessible place was always reachable once you understood the rule.
- Choose it if you enjoy making observations, forming a hypothesis, and checking that hypothesis during a later cycle.
- Choose it if a fixed 22-minute cycle sounds like a useful planning constraint rather than a countdown to endure.
- Expect a discovery-first mystery, not a 2D action game with conventional ability pickups.
Why The Forgotten City is the best investigation-focused alternative
A deadly loop built around people and information
The official Modern Storyteller site describes The Forgotten City as a time-loop exploration and deduction game. Its description emphasizes questioning an interconnected community and exploiting the loop. In practical terms, the loop is valuable because each pass gives you another chance to investigate relationships, test deductions, and use what you learned in a different conversation or decision.
Rank #3
- 10 different portals with unique mechanics
- Vibrant and detailed hand-drawn artwork
- Twitch platforming with new skills to unlock
- Challenging puzzles, traps, monsters and bosses
- A rich narrative, world lore and cast of NPCs
Deduction replaces movement as the main gate
The Forgotten City’s progression is character-led. The key action is not finding a new platforming route but asking the right questions, connecting testimony, and deciding how to act. The official description also highlights moral choices. That gives it a strong overlap with Echo Weaver’s knowledge emphasis while making the play feel substantially different.
Who should choose it
- Choose The Forgotten City if the phrase “time-loop puzzles” makes you think of interrogations, cause and effect, and solving a community-wide mystery.
- Choose it if moral choices and character consequences matter more to you than traversal speed or route optimization.
- Expect social investigation rather than a 2D Metroidvania structure.
A narrowly scoped popularity figure
The official site says the original mod version of The Forgotten City “racked up over 3 million downloads.” The page does not specify a year for that number, so it should not be read as a current sales total or as a directly comparable figure against Echo Weaver or Outer Wilds.
Echo Weaver vs. Outer Wilds vs. The Forgotten City by player priority
| If your priority is… | Best choice | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge itself functioning as progression | Outer Wilds | PlayStation Blog explicitly says progress is limited by player knowledge. | You trade a 2D map for a first-person solar-system mystery. |
| Secrets that feel like upgrades | Echo Weaver | Its official Steam description directly frames secrets as upgrades. | You are choosing the anchor game rather than a substitute. |
| Time as a resource to budget | Echo Weaver | The official description ties time to healing, trading, and route unlocking. | The available evidence does not establish an identical resource model in either recommendation. |
| A fixed, clearly stated cycle | Outer Wilds | PlayStation Blog identifies a 22-minute loop. | The cycle belongs to an open-world space setting, not a platforming world. |
| Questioning a community and solving a social mystery | The Forgotten City | Its official site emphasizes an interconnected community and deduction. | Conversation and moral choices replace movement-focused exploration. |
| Routing and rhythm over reflexes | Echo Weaver | Akupara’s description makes routing and rhythm a central emphasis. | Neither recommended game is documented here as using the same 2D movement model. |
How the three progression models differ
Echo Weaver: learn, spend, reroute
The Echo Weaver loop can be understood as a three-part decision: learn a secret, decide how to spend limited time, then choose a route that the new knowledge makes possible. Healing and trading compete with route unlocking because they draw on the same time resource. The result is a planning problem layered onto action exploration.

Outer Wilds: observe, remember, reinterpret
Outer Wilds turns the reset into a knowledge archive. You observe a changing location during one 22-minute cycle, remember what it implies, and reinterpret a previously confusing clue on a later cycle. Because knowledge is the gate, repeating an area is not automatically repetition in the usual sense: the meaningful change can be your understanding.

The Forgotten City: ask, test, choose
The Forgotten City uses the loop as an investigative tool. You ask members of the community about the mystery, test a theory by changing what you do, and make choices with moral consequences. The knowledge gate is social and deductive rather than traversal-based.

These games reward self-directed discovery. The following habits preserve the puzzle without turning every cycle into guesswork.
- Write down rules, not just plot. Record what triggers a change, what becomes available at a particular point in the cycle, and which action consumed time. A rule is more useful than a paragraph of story summary.
- Separate observation from interpretation. Note what you actually saw before writing what you think it means. This prevents an early theory from becoming an assumed fact.
- Give each cycle one question. Decide whether you are testing a route, a timing window, a character’s claim, or the purpose of a location. A focused experiment makes the reset informative.
- Stop looking up solutions at the first obstacle. In knowledge-gated games, a guide can reveal the very progression you are meant to earn. If you need help, search for a broad system explanation rather than a step-by-step answer.
- Use a spoiler boundary. Outer Wilds’ publisher guidance specifically warns that watching another playthrough can remove the discovery. Avoid videos, thumbnails, and comment sections until you are comfortable sacrificing surprises.
What “games like Echo Weaver” should not imply
Similarity here is about design ideas, not identical presentation. The available official descriptions support three precise overlaps: Echo Weaver links secrets to upgrades; Outer Wilds links progression to knowledge inside a repeating 22-minute solar-system cycle; The Forgotten City links a deadly loop to exploration, deduction, and an interconnected community.
They do not support claims that the games have matching review scores, completion times, sales, difficulty curves, or percentage similarity. No reliable head-to-head statistic has been established for those measures, so a recommendation based on them would be misleading.

Echo Weaver platform and release context
The Steam listing identifies Moonlight Kids as Echo Weaver’s developer and Akupara Games as its publisher. Nintendo of America’s US Switch 2 listing gives the edition a release date of October 8, 2026. Akupara’s own Echo Weaver page still does not specify a release date and describes publishing for PC and Xbox.
Those pages are not necessarily contradictory: they refer to different storefronts, platforms, and publication contexts. Check the specific regional store before assuming that a date applies to every edition. The evidence here does not establish current pricing, physical availability, or a matching retail offer.
Choosing in one minute
Pick Outer Wilds when…
- You want the strongest documented match for knowledge-gated exploration.
- You are comfortable with first-person, open-world discovery instead of 2D platforming.
- A 22-minute cycle sounds like a puzzle framework you can plan around.
Pick The Forgotten City when…
- You want a loop mystery organized around conversations and deduction.
- You enjoy investigating an interconnected community and weighing moral choices.
- You prefer character-led discovery to movement-focused routing.
Stay with Echo Weaver when…
- You specifically want a 2D Metroidvania structure.
- You want time to function as a resource for healing, trading, and opening routes.
- You prefer routing and rhythm to be central rather than treating the loop as only a narrative device.
Verdict
For most readers searching for games like Echo Weaver, start with Outer Wilds. It is the only recommendation here with an explicit statement that player knowledge limits progression, and its 22-minute reset makes time and understanding inseparable. Choose The Forgotten City when the part you want most is investigation: questioning people, deducing the rules of a community, and making moral decisions inside a deadly loop. Keep the distinction clear: both are strong thematic and mechanical matches, but neither is a direct replacement for Echo Weaver’s 2D, routing-focused Metroidvania format.
