If you want less setup, AMD Adrenalin offers in-game capture for supported Radeon systems, while Steam Game Recording is built for background capture of games played through Steam. There is no verified, controlled test here that establishes a universal winner for image quality or performance.
Choose software by the kind of recording you need
A replay recorder, a background capture timeline, and a full production workspace solve different problems. Decide what you want to keep before choosing an app:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Short clips: Prefer an integrated capture tool if it is supported by your GPU or game platform.
- Gameplay you may want to save later: Steam Game Recording can capture in the background for games played through the Steam Client.
- Full sessions, multiple sources, or a polished layout: OBS Studio gives you scenes, audio mixing, filters, hotkeys, and local recording.
- Console gameplay on a PC: You may need a capture device, or you may be able to use a console-to-PC streaming app as an OBS source.
Recording settings, encoder support, system load, and storage all affect the result. A feature list alone does not show which app will perform best on your particular computer.
Best game recording software compared
| Tool | Best fit | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Flexible local recording and production | Records locally; supports game, desktop, webcam, video-file, and capture-card sources; includes scenes, audio mixing, filters, and hotkeys. Free and open source. | More controls mean more setup. Performance depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Radeon owners seeking integrated capture | AMD describes its Media and Capture section as a way to capture in-game moments. | Exact current clip limits, encoder options, supported models, and relative performance are not established here; check support for your installed hardware and software. |
| Steam Game Recording | Background capture for Steam Client games | Captures gameplay in the background, with a timeline for reviewing footage. | Its documented scope is games played through Steam. Valve says systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards use the CPU, which may cause noticeable performance impact; this is Valve’s guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
OBS Studio: best when you want control
OBS is the strongest general-purpose choice in this set when you need a recording setup you can shape around your game. A scene can combine a game with a webcam, desktop or window capture, video files, and other inputs; audio mixing, filters, hotkeys, and transitions help manage a longer recording or a more produced layout. OBS can also send a stream to a destination, but you do not need to stream to use its local recording workflow.

Set up a basic local recording
- Install OBS from the official OBS Project site and open it. On first launch, review the configuration it proposes; the ideal recording settings depend on your PC and target quality.
- In the Scenes panel, create a scene for the game. In Sources, add a game source where supported. Add a desktop or window source if game capture does not work, and add a webcam or other inputs only if you need them.
- Check the audio mixer while the game is running. Confirm that game audio and any microphone appear at usable levels; use filters only when they address a specific problem such as noise or inconsistent volume.
- Open Settings > Output and choose the recording path, recording format, encoder, and quality appropriate to your available storage and hardware. OBS does not have one universally correct bitrate or encoder setting: resolution, frame rate, encoder capability, scene complexity, and disk space all matter.
- Open Settings > Video and set the output resolution and frame rate you can sustain while playing. Higher resolution and FPS increase the workload and typically require more storage; lower the output if the recording stutters or the game becomes unstable.
- Make a short test recording, then play it back. Check for dropped frames or stutter, missing audio, an incorrect source, and whether the file is saved where expected before recording a long session.
- Use Start Recording to capture a session and Stop Recording when finished. Verify the resulting file before deleting or moving any source footage.
OBS publishes baseline OS and hardware requirements, but compatibility is not a performance guarantee. As OBS puts it, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its requirements page was published on 2021-08-25, so check the current OBS documentation for up-to-date system details.
Multi-GPU laptop issue
Some laptops use integrated graphics for desktop tasks and a discrete GPU for games. OBS explains that if OBS uses the integrated GPU while the game uses the discrete GPU, Game Capture may fail; performance can also suffer, and rare crashes are possible. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide (published 2023-04-24) gives these Windows paths for Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11:
- Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings.
- Choose OBS and set its graphics preference to use the appropriate GPU for your setup.
- Restart OBS and test Game Capture again.
Windows labels can change; if the path differs on your PC, consult the current OBS GPU Selection Guide and Windows help rather than assuming the old menu is still present.

AMD Adrenalin: convenient for supported Radeon systems
AMD describes the Media and Capture section of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition as a way to capture in-game moments. It is worth checking first if you have supported Radeon hardware and want capture integrated with AMD’s software rather than building a scene-based workflow. Availability and controls depend on your installed hardware and software, so confirm compatibility with AMD’s current documentation. Current clip-duration limits, encoder choices, and comparative performance are not established here.
Steam Game Recording: background capture for Steam gameplay
Steam Game Recording is designed to record games played through the Steam Client in the background, so you can review gameplay in its timeline instead of having to start a full production setup for every session. It is the most direct fit if your games and recording workflow already live in Steam.
Valve says supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards remove most of the performance cost of creating video recordings. On systems without those cards, Steam uses the CPU, which may create a noticeable performance impact. Treat that as Valve’s product guidance, not a tested guarantee for your PC; try it with the game and settings you actually use.

Recording a console through OBS
OBS documents two routes for bringing console gameplay into an OBS scene: capture the console’s video through a game capture device, or capture a window from PS Remote Play or the Xbox app streaming from the console to the PC. The network route depends on a fast console-to-PC connection for good quality.
When a capture card is needed
A USB game capture card is a conditional purchase for console or external video sources, not a default requirement for PC gameplay. Before buying, confirm the exact device supports your host operating system, console output, resolution and frame rate, passthrough needs, and connection type. OBS names Elgato, AVerMedia, Razer Ripsaw, EVGA XR1, and Hauppauge HD PVR Pro as examples, not as a tested ranking.
For macOS and Linux, OBS recommends a device that supports USB Video Class (UVC). Nintendo Switch capture works when the system is docked; Switch Lite is not compatible with the docked capture path because it cannot be docked. A PC player recording only PC gameplay should try software capture before purchasing hardware.

Settings and practical limits that affect every recorder
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose an output your hardware can sustain during gameplay, not just the highest option in a menu. OBS identifies resolution, FPS, encoder, and scene complexity as performance factors.
- Encoder and GPU: Available encoding options vary by hardware and software. An encoder choice that works well on one PC is not evidence it will be best on another.
- Storage: Longer sessions and higher-quality output consume more disk space. Check free space and confirm the save location before a long capture.
- Audio and sources: A test clip catches muted microphones, wrong windows, missing game audio, and overlays that obscure gameplay.
- Copyright and platform rules: Recording a game does not give you rights to its soundtrack, cutscenes, or other included material. Check the relevant rights and the platform’s current policies before publishing footage, especially if it contains licensed music.
There is no comparable controlled test in the evidence available here that establishes a current quality, file-size, or FPS-impact winner among these tools. Treat compatibility claims and product guidance according to their stated scope, and test your own game, hardware, and settings.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Game Capture shows a blank screen | On a multi-GPU laptop, OBS and the game may be using different GPUs. | Set OBS to the appropriate GPU in Windows Graphics Settings using the OBS GPU Selection Guide, restart OBS, and test again. |
| Recording stutters or the game slows down | The selected encoder, resolution, FPS, scene complexity, or CPU/GPU load exceeds what the system can sustain. | Reduce output resolution or FPS, simplify the scene, and test a different available encoder. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause. |
| Steam capture affects performance | Valve says systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards use CPU encoding, which may have noticeable impact. | Test the recording with the affected game; reduce capture demands or use a different workflow if the CPU load remains disruptive. |
| Console footage is missing from OBS | The capture device, console streaming window, or source selection may not be set up for the chosen route. | Verify the device connection and Video Capture Source, or confirm the PS Remote Play/Xbox app window is open and selected. For network capture, check the console-to-PC connection. |
| Recording has no game or microphone sound | The intended audio source may be muted, missing, or routed differently than expected. | Watch OBS’s audio mixer during a short test and confirm the correct source registers before starting a full session. |
