YouTube’s published guidance does not state a blanket ban on continuous or 24/7 live streams. But a stream must meet YouTube’s rules, you need the rights to everything you broadcast, and YouTube may restrict live access for policy violations. The main practical caveat is that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
What YouTube allows—and what it does not guarantee
YouTube’s live-stream terms require live content to comply with the Community Guidelines. They also require creators to have the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including applicable music rights, and to comply with relevant laws. These terms apply to archived content too.

That means permission to run a continuous stream is not permission to broadcast any material indefinitely. A stream can be interrupted or restricted if it violates copyright or other YouTube rules. YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions identifies issues including active copyright strikes, matches to another copyrighted live broadcast, and Community Guidelines strikes. If your account has an active live-stream restriction, you cannot get around it by switching to another channel.
Check your channel’s live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance lists these requirements and limits:

- You must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube lists up to 10 active streams per channel and up to three active streams per stream key at the same time.
The concurrent-stream limits are not a published maximum duration for one stream. The guidance reviewed does not state a general 12-hour cap on how long you may broadcast.
Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR caveat
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive limitation, not a stated prohibition on broadcasting longer than 12 hours. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.

There is a separate viewer-impacting limitation: YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Platform and device conditions can reduce DVR availability further. If viewers need to replay earlier portions, do not assume a 24/7 stream will offer a complete rewind history.
Practical archive checklist
- Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the full broadcast.
- Decide whether viewers need to rewind; long-running streams may not support the expected DVR experience.
- Test your recording and storage workflow before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Only stream material you have permission to use, including music. Having a copy of a song, video, or other recording does not by itself establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it. YouTube may act on copyright matches or other policy violations, and a restriction can affect your ability to go live.

Monetization is conditional, not automatic. According to YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance, eligible monetized channels can enable ads; pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when stream monetization is on, and mid-roll ads can be automatic, scheduled, or manual. YouTube cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to receive an ad. Fan-funding options such as Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships depend on eligibility and availability.
Live broadcasts are also subject to YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Ad-supported content must meet advertiser-friendly rules, and the channel must meet applicable program policies. Broadcasting around the clock does not guarantee monetization approval, ad delivery, or a particular revenue level.

Keeping a YouTube stream running continuously
You can operate a stream yourself with an encoder-based setup, but continuous broadcasting requires a plan for power, network connectivity, source playback, and recovery if the connection or stream fails. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe encoders as an option for higher-production-value events; a dedicated hardware encoder is optional, not a stated requirement for 24/7 streaming. Check that any equipment supports your chosen formats and suits your own network and power needs. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted operation from any particular setup.

Whichever method you use, keep your content rights and account eligibility in order, and make a separate archive plan: YouTube’s automatic archive and DVR features may not cover a stream beyond 12 hours.
