Neither console treats a disc as a guarantee of a completely offline, self-contained game. Modern releases can require a large local installation, patches, account authentication or online services. The disc supplies entitlement and, depending on the title, some installation data; it does not remove those other requirements.

A drive lets you buy, sell, lend and use pre-owned physical releases, and it can reduce dependence on a single digital storefront. You can also play compatible movie Blu-ray formats, although movie playback is not the deciding factor for most game buyers.

- Format: Is it a disc for the console, rather than a download code, a different platform release or a game card?
- Compatibility: Does the manufacturer list that exact title as playable on the newer console?
- Online and installation requirements: Does the game need a download, patch, account check or server connection before it becomes playable?
Buying a disc edition solves only the first part of the problem. Check the title, region and condition before assuming a particular pre-owned copy will work exactly as an older console did.

Which PS5 configuration to buy
Buy the PS5 configuration with the built-in disc drive when you own or plan to buy PS4 or PS5 game discs. Sony’s PlayStation product documentation describes this model’s capability as playing “PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs.” The Digital Edition cannot read those discs unless a compatible add-on drive and the appropriate model support are available, so do not assume a digital-only package can be converted later.
Retail bundles differ by region, storage specification and included game. Verify the exact Slim Disc Edition model, what is in the box and the current local price before ordering. A bundle that appears to be the disc model may be a digital package with a separate accessory, while stock and names can change.
PS4 backward compatibility
Sony’s FAQ says more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 library is playable on PS5. That is a broad platform statistic, not a promise for every title: a small number of games remain unsupported or may have features that behave differently. Check the individual game’s current compatibility information when a specific used purchase matters.
PS5 games released on Blu-ray are designed for the PS5 disc model. A PS4 disc generally installs the PS4 version, although some games provide a PS5 upgrade. Whether an upgrade is free, paid or unavailable is controlled by the publisher and title, not by the drive itself.

Using a used PS4 or PS5 disc
- Inspect the listing for the correct PlayStation format and region. Avoid listings that contain only a download code or that clearly identify a different platform.
- Insert the disc with the console powered on. The PS5 reads the license and begins copying the game data to its internal SSD.
- Allow system and game updates to finish if the title offers them. A fast internet connection is useful because the installed data may be much larger than the disc’s readable portion.
- Start the game with the disc inserted. Removing it after installation normally prevents the console from verifying the license.
- Keep the disc and case together if you may resell the game or need to identify its region later.
The exact download size, update requirement and upgrade policy vary by game. A used disc can therefore be an economical entry point without being a one-step offline experience.
Where the PS5 is the better choice
- You already own a large PS4 Blu-ray library and want the highest documented chance of carrying it forward.
- Your priority is PS5 first-party or platform-exclusive releases that are sold physically.
- You want one console for PS4 and PS5 discs rather than maintaining an older PS4 for most of your collection.
Xbox Series X: the broadest documented legacy-disc support
Drive and compatibility scope
Xbox Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray drive and native 4K capability. Microsoft states that the console is compatible with “thousands of games across four generations of XBOX.” That scope covers selected Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles; it does not mean every disc from those generations is supported. Backward compatibility is a title-by-title catalog decision.

For a collector with games spanning several Xbox generations, this is the most expansive official compatibility claim among the disc consoles covered here. Check the supported-game catalog before paying a premium for an uncommon disc, especially for original Xbox and Xbox 360 releases.
How a supported disc works
Microsoft explains that, for disc-based games in the backward-compatibility catalog, inserting the disc starts a download to the console’s hard drive. The disc must remain in the drive during play. In practice, the physical copy proves ownership while the Series X runs the installed, often updated version from storage.
- Confirm that the title is in the backward-compatible catalog and that the disc is the correct Xbox generation.
- Insert the disc into the Series X drive.
- Let the console download or install the game to internal storage; older titles may still require a substantial update.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you launch the game, even after the installation completes.
- Install later patches when offered, and check whether online features still have active servers.
Where Xbox Series X is the better choice
- Your used collection includes Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games rather than primarily PS4 discs.
- You value the largest documented cross-generation catalog and are willing to verify compatibility per title.
- You prefer UHD Blu-ray hardware alongside game-disc support.

There is no universal winner because the disc in your existing collection is the most useful specification. A PS5 does not make Xbox discs playable, and an Xbox Series X does not make PS4 Blu-ray games playable. Start with the titles you already own, then check which console’s current catalog includes the games you intend to buy used.

Choose by the collection you already own
If most of your games are PS4 discs
Select the PS5 Slim Disc Edition. Sony’s more-than-99% figure makes it the lower-risk migration path for a large PS4 library, provided you confirm any unusual or region-specific titles individually. Keep the original PS4 only for games that are not supported or for peripherals and features that the newer console does not reproduce.
If your shelf spans several Xbox generations
Select Xbox Series X after checking the backward-compatible list for your exact discs. Its four-generation support is especially valuable when the collection includes Xbox 360 or original Xbox cases, but unsupported titles still need their original hardware or another compatible solution.
If you are starting from scratch
Compare the physical releases you can actually buy in your region, the exclusives you want and the storage cost of installing them. A disc drive is most useful when you expect to buy, borrow or resell physical games repeatedly; it adds little value if nearly every planned purchase will be digital.
If “physical” means ownership rather than discs
Include Nintendo Switch 2 in the shortlist. Its physical games use cards, so it satisfies a preference for a tangible copy but not a requirement for an optical drive or Blu-ray disc collection.
Storage, patches and offline limitations
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X install disc games locally. The console may copy data from the disc, download missing files and apply patches before the first launch. Plan storage around the installed size rather than the capacity printed on the disc packaging.

- SSD space: Keep free capacity for the operating system, updates and multiple large games. Deleting an installed game does not invalidate your disc; you can reinstall it later with the disc.
- Internet access: Have a connection available for first-time downloads, patches and compatibility packages, particularly for older Xbox titles that are downloaded rather than run directly from the disc.
- Servers and accounts: A disc cannot restore multiplayer servers that a publisher has closed, nor can it bypass an account requirement or a game whose essential content is delivered online.
- Regional and edition differences: A disc, downloadable expansion and save file can have region or edition restrictions. Match the used copy to your console account and existing add-ons.
Before buying a scarce used title, search the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the publisher’s support page for installation, upgrade and server notes. This is more reliable than assuming two boxes with similar names are interchangeable.

- Identify the console model. Confirm “PS5 Disc Edition” or “PS5 Slim Disc Edition” for PlayStation Blu-ray games, or “Xbox Series X” for Xbox discs. Do not confuse a digital-only model with a drive model.
- List your priority games. Write down the ten or twenty used titles you care about most, including their platform and region.
- Verify compatibility. Use the relevant official backward-compatibility or PlayStation compatibility information for each priority title.
- Check the physical copy. Ask whether the listing includes the disc, whether it is damaged, and whether a required code has already been redeemed.
- Budget for storage. Include an expansion option or a routine for uninstalling and reinstalling games if your library is large.
- Confirm local availability. Bundle contents, warranty terms, storage size and prices vary by country and retailer; verify them at the time of purchase.
Common problems and fixes
The console does not recognize the disc
Clean the disc with a soft, lint-free cloth, restart the console and test another known-good disc. Confirm that the disc is a supported game format rather than a code card, a different-generation release or a movie format the console does not support. Persistent failure with multiple discs points to a drive or hardware issue rather than the game.
The game installs but will not start without the disc
This is normal licensing behavior for disc purchases. Reinsert the same disc; installing the files does not turn the physical license into a digital entitlement. For Xbox backward-compatible titles, Microsoft explicitly requires the disc to stay inserted after the game is downloaded to the hard drive.
A compatible game asks for a large download
Allow the download and keep enough SSD space available. Current versions can include patches, language packs and compatibility data that were not present on the original disc. If your connection is limited, install overnight or use the console’s pause and resume controls rather than interrupting the installation repeatedly.

A used game is listed as compatible but a feature is missing
Compatibility can preserve the core game without reproducing every peripheral, downloadable expansion or online service. Check the title’s support notes, verify that the used copy includes any required accessory and confirm that the relevant servers remain available.

The future of PlayStation game discs
Sony announced in 2026 that production of new PlayStation game discs will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony also states that discs released before January 2028 can continue to be played on PS5. This is a change to the production of future releases, not a statement that existing PS4 or PS5 discs stop working on that date.
The announcement makes the disc model more important for anyone building a long-term PlayStation collection before 2028, while also making availability of later physical releases less certain. It does not change the current requirement to verify title compatibility, installation data and online services.
Nintendo Switch 2 as a physical-media alternative
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Switch games. Its physical format is a game card, not an optical disc, so it cannot read PS4, PS5, Xbox or Blu-ray game discs. Include it when portability, Nintendo’s software library or card-based ownership matters; exclude it when the requirement is specifically an optical drive.
Game-card behavior is also title-specific. Check whether a particular release contains the complete game or requires a download, and verify Switch-to-Switch 2 compatibility before buying an older used card.
Bottom-line buying decision
Choose the PS5 Slim Disc Edition for a PS4/PS5 Blu-ray collection and PlayStation exclusives. Choose Xbox Series X for the broadest documented support across Xbox generations and a shelf containing Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 only when physical game cards meet your needs. Whichever model you buy, verify your priority titles, reserve SSD space and expect the disc to function as a license and installation source rather than a promise of complete offline play.
