What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with Task Manager: its Processes and Performance views can show whether CPU, memory, or disk use is unusually high, while Startup apps can reveal software that launches with Windows. If those views do not explain the slowdown, use a more specialized tool only for the evidence you need—process details, startup configuration, or a real-time activity trace.
No single utility diagnoses every cause. Limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs can all contribute to a slow PC, according to Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance. A high resource reading is a clue to investigate, not proof of the root cause.

Which free tool should you open first?
For most people, the right first check is Task Manager, which is built into Windows. It gives a useful overview without requiring you to interpret detailed system events or change advanced settings.
- Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click Start and choose Task Manager.
- Check Processes. Look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns while the PC is slow. Select a column heading to sort by that resource and identify which apps or processes are using the most at that moment.
- Check Performance. Review the CPU, memory, and disk activity graphs. This view helps distinguish a brief spike from sustained heavy use.
- Check Startup apps. If the PC is slow mainly after signing in, review the listed apps and their startup impact. Disable an entry only if you recognize it and do not need it to start automatically.
Microsoft’s guidance on improving PC performance in Windows recommends checking resource use and startup apps. Exact Task Manager labels and layout can vary by Windows version.

How the free tools compare
| Tool | Best evidence for | Accessibility | Availability |
| Task Manager | Current CPU, memory, and disk use; apps and processes; startup apps | Best first stop for most users | Built into Windows |
| Windows Security: Device performance and health | Common storage, battery, or system issues and recommendations | Beginner-friendly summary | Built into Windows Security; availability of details may vary by device |
| Microsoft PC Manager | Storage cleanup, startup management, and performance optimization | Designed as an optional, more guided utility | Optional Microsoft utility; download availability can change |
| Process Explorer | More detailed investigation of running processes, including certain DLL-version problems and handle leaks | For users who need more than Task Manager shows | Free Sysinternals download; Microsoft’s current documentation lists Windows 11 and higher for client systems |
| Process Monitor | Real-time file-system, Registry, and process/thread activity | Advanced; event output can be difficult to interpret | Free Sysinternals download; version 4.11 was listed on Microsoft Learn on September 10, 2026 |
| Autoruns | What is configured to launch automatically, including the Registry and file locations for startup settings | Advanced; entries need careful interpretation | Free Sysinternals download |
Microsoft’s system configuration guidance describes Task Manager as a system monitor and startup manager. Its Device performance and health guidance explains the Windows Security overview. Microsoft also documents Process Explorer, Process Monitor, Autoruns, and the Sysinternals Suite. These general links lead to official support or Sysinternals resources; use the named tool or document there to locate its current page and download.
Use Windows Security for a broader health check
When Task Manager shows no clear resource bottleneck—or you want a general check alongside it—open Windows Security and select Device performance and health. Microsoft says this page can identify common storage, battery, or system issues and offer recommendations. It is a broad health overview, not a detailed trace of which process caused a slowdown.

When an optional utility is useful
Microsoft PC Manager
Microsoft PC Manager offers storage cleanup, startup management, and performance optimization. Consider it if you prefer a guided utility for those tasks. It is optional: Task Manager and Windows Security provide built-in checks, and PC Manager should not be treated as a universal diagnosis or a guarantee that a PC will become faster.
Sysinternals tools
Microsoft’s free Sysinternals utilities are for questions that the built-in views cannot answer. Download them from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals pages, and check the current Windows compatibility information there before use. The Sysinternals Suite bundles Process Explorer, Process Monitor, Autoruns, and other utilities, but you do not need the whole suite to investigate one specific issue.

Choose a Sysinternals tool based on the question
Process Explorer: what is this process doing?
Process Explorer provides more detail about running processes than a basic overview. Microsoft highlights it for investigating issues such as DLL-version problems and handle leaks. Use it when a process is a plausible lead but Task Manager does not show enough detail to investigate it. Its current Microsoft documentation lists Windows 11 and higher for client systems.
Autoruns: what starts automatically?
Autoruns shows what is configured to run automatically and the Registry or file locations that hold those startup settings. It offers more coverage than a simple startup-app list, which also means its entries can be harder to assess. Inspect an entry carefully before changing it; an unfamiliar name is not, by itself, evidence that it is safe to disable or remove.

Process Monitor: what activity is happening in real time?
Microsoft describes Process Monitor as an advanced monitoring tool that shows real-time file-system, Registry, and process/thread activity. Microsoft Learn listed version 4.11 on September 10, 2026. This level of detail is useful for a specific, advanced investigation, but it is not the first tool most people need for a generally slow PC. A long event stream can be difficult to interpret without a focused question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFollow the slowdown instead of guessing
Note when the problem occurs, then observe the relevant resource during that period. A PC that lags while signing in calls for a different first look from one that slows only when a particular app opens.
- Slow mainly at startup: review Task Manager’s Startup apps tab first. Use Autoruns only if you need to inspect startup configuration beyond the basic list.
- Slow while using one app: watch CPU, memory, and disk use in Task Manager while reproducing the problem. Process Explorer may help when you need more detail about a running process.
- Slow continuously: check whether resource use stays high over time, and run the Windows Security device-health check for common system or storage issues.
- Need to trace file, Registry, or process activity: Process Monitor can show those events in real time, but it is an advanced diagnostic tool rather than a general-purpose speed meter.
Change one setting or startup item at a time, then see whether the same slowdown changes. That makes it easier to tell whether your adjustment mattered. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes or changing advanced startup entries simply because a utility lists them; first establish what the item is and why it is relevant.
What a slow-PC tool can—and cannot—tell you
Resource monitors show activity, startup utilities show configuration, and health pages flag certain common issues. None alone proves the underlying cause of every slowdown. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and aging hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs among possible contributors. If the tools do not reveal a clear lead, do not assume that a high reading identifies a faulty component or that a cleanup utility will resolve the problem.
