For a new action RPG player looking for the gentler start, Minecraft Dungeons II is the provisional pick. Xbox presents it as approachable, and GamesRadar’s review describes its early play as streamlined. Diablo IV can still work for beginners: it offers a campaign and a staged difficulty path, though its skill trees, gear and endgame give players more systems to learn. The choice depends on whether you want a simpler-feeling introduction or deeper ongoing build progression.
What makes Minecraft Dungeons II the gentler starting point?
Xbox’s official framing emphasizes approachability while also saying the sequel expands gameplay and build expression. That suggests a balance: there is room to experiment, but the game is still positioned as an accessible action RPG. Minecraft describes it as an adventure with new missions, enemies and areas. Xbox Wire’s overview and Minecraft’s game announcement explain that positioning.

GamesRadar’s September 28, 2026 review calls the game streamlined for younger players, but notes that later Soul Storms bring tougher enemies and can become frustrating. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not the result of a controlled comparison with Diablo IV. It does mean “easier” should not be read as “easy all the way through.” Read the GamesRadar review.

How approachable is Diablo IV for beginners?
Diablo IV has a campaign and an expansive endgame, with progression systems built around skills, gear and increasingly challenging content. That breadth can mean more to explore and learn than a streamlined introduction, but it does not make the game off-limits to newcomers. Blizzard provides a progression path through difficulty settings rather than requiring players to start at the hardest level. Blizzard’s Diablo IV overview describes the campaign and endgame.

Difficulty increases in stages
Blizzard’s difficulty guide says Expert unlocks after the prologue. Penitent becomes available after the final quest in the base campaign, or if a player skips the base game’s main questline. Higher Torment tiers and endgame challenges provide further escalation. The practical takeaway is that beginners can start lower and advance as they become comfortable; these unlocks are not a measure of how difficult the games are relative to one another. See Blizzard’s difficulty guide.

The descriptions in the table reflect official product framing and a review, not a shared difficulty scale or side-by-side play test.
