Recommended Free Tools
Start with FFprobe or VLC’s Codec Information to identify what a video file contains; use MediaInfo when you need a more detailed report. If the file is readable and the problem appears to be its container, try remuxing a copy. Remuxing can change how existing streams are packaged, but it cannot be counted on to restore missing or corrupted video data.
Choose a tool for the job
| Tool | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg / FFprobe | Inspect media properties with FFprobe; process, remux, or convert files with FFmpeg. | Command-line oriented, so choose options carefully. Official FFmpeg documentation: ffprobe. |
| VLC | Play a file, inspect its codecs through the graphical interface, and attempt remuxing. | Interface labels and procedures can vary by version. See VideoLAN’s FAQ and remuxing guide. |
| MediaInfo | Display detailed technical information about a media file. | Focused on reporting file properties rather than repairing them. VideoLAN points to it for more detailed specifications: VideoLAN FAQ. |
Pick based on what you need to learn first: use a graphical player for a quick view, FFprobe for a repeatable command-line inspection, or MediaInfo for a detailed report. None of these roles establishes that a tool can recover every damaged recording.

Inspect the recording before attempting a repair
- Keep the original. Make a working copy before any processing. Inspection and remuxing do not guarantee recovery, so retain the untouched file in case an attempt makes matters worse.
- Check whether it opens. Try playing the copy in VLC. If it plays, inspect the codec details through Tools → Codec Information on Windows, as described in VideoLAN’s FAQ.
- Probe the file with FFprobe. A basic command is
ffprobe "input.mp4", replacing the filename with your copy’s path. Review whether the tool can identify the container and streams. FFprobe is part of FFmpeg; consult the official documentation for its options. - Get more detail if needed. Open the copy in MediaInfo when the VLC view is not detailed enough. Note the container and the listed video and audio streams before choosing what to try.
- Separate file symptoms from streaming symptoms. A file that opens and plays is different from a live OBS stream that drops frames or disconnects. For the latter, follow OBS’s dedicated stream connection troubleshooting rather than treating it as file corruption.
When remuxing may help—and when it may not
A container packages media streams; remuxing demuxes and re-muxes existing streams into a container. It is a packaging operation, not a way to recreate missing video or audio data. If inspection succeeds and the symptom plausibly points to a container problem, remuxing a copy is a reasonable attempt. VLC documents a graphical remux route in its remuxing guide; FFmpeg can also remux from the command line, but select an output container and options appropriate to the file rather than assuming one command fits every case.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Try a remux: the file is readable enough to inspect, and the suspected fault is packaging rather than the encoded streams.
- Do not expect a remux to restore content: data that is absent, truncated, or damaged inside a stream may remain absent or damaged in the output.
- Check the result: inspect and play the remuxed copy, and compare it with the original. Keep both until you know whether the output is usable.
The available tool documentation confirms inspection and remuxing capabilities, not a universal recovery method or success rate. A specific format, operating system, error message, and sample file are needed to choose a more targeted repair approach.

Keep OBS streaming problems separate from recording repair
If the video file itself plays normally but an OBS broadcast drops frames or loses its connection, focus on the streaming path. OBS maintains separate guidance for connection troubleshooting and an x264 guide. Those issues are not, by themselves, evidence that the source video file is damaged.
OBS is free and open source under GPLv2, with no watermarks or other limitations; its Help Portal says it can be used commercially without restrictions. Get it from the official OBS website, and see the project’s Help Portal for support guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than repair a file for a local OBS broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
