For a pre-recorded playlist, export each video using the same upload settings you would use for any other pre-recorded YouTube video. Do not substitute live-stream encoder settings: YouTube’s upload guidance recommends variable bitrate, while its separate live-stream guidance specifies constant bitrate.

Use H.264 High Profile when your goal is to match YouTube’s general recommended upload encoding settings. YouTube’s official upload page names High Profile and does not name Main Profile as an alternative recommendation: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Recommended export settings for a pre-recorded YouTube upload
YouTube’s general guidance specifies the following video settings. Use them as a practical export checklist, while matching frame rate and resolution to your actual source and delivery needs.

YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common frame rates, while noting other frame rates are acceptable. Its guidance states: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”

Choose the upload bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The figures below are YouTube’s published SDR upload recommendations, not mandatory ceilings or guaranteed quality thresholds. Choose the resolution row and frame-rate group that match your export. These figures are from YouTube Help; the page reviewed does not state a publication year.

These are reference recommendations from the general upload page, which says that no bitrate limit is required. Do not treat the higher figure as a required target for every video; the appropriate value depends on the source, resolution, frame rate, and encoding.

Audio and color settings
Audio
YouTube’s general upload page lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. Channel configuration depends on the audio setup, so preserve the intended channel layout rather than changing it without a reason. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings for the complete audio details.
SDR and HDR are different workflows
For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709. That advice is not a complete HDR workflow. YouTube’s dedicated HDR upload guidance calls for correct metadata for the transfer function (PQ or HLG), Rec. 2020 primaries, and the Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix. It recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC/H.265 for HDR because they support 10-bit encoding and HDR metadata at reasonable bitrates; H.264 10-bit is listed as workable but requiring very high bitrates. If the finished video is HDR, follow that dedicated guidance instead of assuming the SDR H.264 recommendations cover it.

Keep pre-recorded uploads separate from live-stream settings
A playlist made from uploaded videos is still a pre-recorded upload workflow. Use the upload page’s variable-bitrate guidance for the files. YouTube’s separate live encoder settings cover live ingestion and specify constant bitrate. Do not copy live-stream bitrate or keyframe advice into an upload export merely because the video will later appear in a playlist or continuous stream.

If the upload looks wrong after processing
When color appears incorrect, check that the file’s transfer characteristics, color primaries, and matrix metadata match the mastering. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance also points SDR creators to BT.709. For a profile-related export issue, verify what the encoder actually produced and consult its documentation; YouTube’s general page does not establish that Main Profile files universally fail or explain a universal compatibility difference between Main and High.
