If OBS shows black video from a local file, first check how you added it: use Media Source or VLC Video to play a file in an OBS scene. Use Window Capture only when you specifically need to capture a separate player window. Then check the source setup, test Media Source with hardware decoding off, and compare playback through VLC Video. No single setting is a universal fix; the right diagnosis depends on your source type, file codec, operating system, and OBS version.
First, confirm how OBS is supposed to show the video
OBS has different sources for playing a media file and capturing another application. Mixing them up can look like a decoding problem even when the file itself is not at fault.

Playing a file inside your OBS scene
Add the local file as a Media Source. The OBS Project lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported file extensions for Media Source. That list is not a complete codec or profile compatibility table, so an extension alone cannot confirm that every file encoded in that container will play. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Capturing a separate player window
Use Window Capture only if your goal is to show the window of an external player, such as VLC, rather than add the video file directly to OBS. An OBS forum reply to a Windows 8.1 user running OBS 25.0.8 and VLC 3.0.11 suggested Media Source or VLC Source for a video file instead of capturing VLC through Window Capture. That older example illustrates the source distinction; it is not a universal fix for current versions. OBS forum discussion.

Work through the basic checks
- Open the scene you are using. In the Sources list, make sure the intended source is visible and enabled. Check that another source is not covering it.
- Verify the file selection. Open the source properties and confirm it points to the intended local file. If you use a Media Source, check its media-file field; if you use VLC Video, check the playlist entry.
- Check whether audio plays. Audio with a black picture is useful diagnostic information, but it does not by itself prove that the video codec is unsupported or that the file is corrupt.
- Test the file outside OBS. See whether a normal standalone player displays it. Note the player and whether both picture and sound work; this helps distinguish an OBS-source issue from a problem that also occurs outside OBS.
Test Media Source with hardware decoding off
Media Source has an optional Use hardware decoding when available setting. It asks the GPU to decode certain file types when a suitable hardware decoder is available; the OBS documentation gives Off as the default. If the setting is on and the preview is black, turn it off, apply the change, and test again. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure. OBS Media Sources documentation.
A historical OBS issue described a black screen after hardware decoding was enabled for a WebM Media Source on macOS 13 with OBS 28.1.2. It supports trying the setting off in a relevant case, but it does not establish that hardware decoding commonly causes black video or that current systems behave the same way. Compare playback with VLC Video
If Media Source still shows black, try the separate VLC Video source with the same file. OBS describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This gives you a different playback path to compare; it does not guarantee support for every codec or file. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If VLC Video displays the picture but Media Source does not, that narrows the investigation to differences in their playback paths. It does not, by itself, identify the file’s codec or prove that one source is a permanent fix.

Identify the file and system before trying a specific fix
If both OBS sources fail, avoid guessing from the filename extension. Find the actual video codec and, if available, its profile; record the following details before asking for help:
- Operating system and version, OBS version, and VLC version, if installed.
- File extension, video codec and profile if known, and whether a standalone player shows the picture.
- OBS source type, whether audio plays, and whether Media Source hardware decoding is enabled.
- GPU model and driver version, plus an OBS log from a session in which the problem occurs.
These details make it possible to investigate the actual playback path. The documentation and issue reports cited here do not establish one codec-specific fix that applies to all black-screen cases.

Do not confuse a black picture with an overloaded stream
A static black preview and choppy or laggy output are different symptoms. If the video stutters, OBS reports overload, or output performance drops, follow OBS’s performance guidance: free GPU capacity, simplify resource-heavy scenes, and consider a lower output resolution or frame rate where appropriate. That guidance addresses performance problems, not a proven fix for a static black file preview. OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting.
