What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an occasional, attended session with a relative, start with Microsoft Quick Assist. It is made for helping friends or family, and your relative approves screen sharing—and separately, full control—before you can use the PC. TeamViewer and AnyDesk are alternatives for personal, non-commercial help, but their free-use limits make them a poor fit for paid or work support.
Which free remote-access tool should you choose?
| Tool | Best fit | What your relative must do | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Quick Assist | One-off, attended help between family or friends | Enter the helper’s six-digit code, allow screen sharing, and separately approve full control if wanted | A work- or school-managed PC may block Microsoft Store installation. Microsoft advises connecting only with a trusted helper. Microsoft’s Quick Assist instructions. |
| TeamViewer | Personal, non-commercial remote help across supported operating systems | Install the client and use the invitation or ID-based connection flow described by TeamViewer | Free use is limited to personal, non-commercial purposes; business use requires a separate plan. TeamViewer’s remote-access page. |
| AnyDesk | Occasional, non-commercial help for family or friends | Provide the device ID and approve the helper’s connection request | The free personal option is limited. Repeated or business-like use may lead to restrictions or upgrade prompts; it is not permission to provide paid support. AnyDesk’s personal-use page. |
Quick Assist is the clearest starting point when the person at the PC can participate. Choose TeamViewer or AnyDesk if you specifically need a third-party service or broader device support, and check the vendor’s current terms before using it. The available official product information does not establish a universal winner or support a reliable comparison of session limits, file transfer, every free-tier unattended-access rule, or every supported Windows release.

How to help a relative with Quick Assist
- Open Quick Assist on the helper’s PC. Choose Help someone and share the six-digit code with your relative.
- Have your relative enter the code. They review the request and allow the connection and screen sharing.
- Ask before taking control. If seeing the screen is not enough, request full control. Your relative must approve that separately and can decline.
- End the session when the problem is resolved. Either person can leave the session.
Microsoft documents Quick Assist for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and notes that it requires WebView2. Installation may involve the Microsoft Store; organizational policy can block Store access on a work- or school-managed PC, and Microsoft notes that some older Windows builds can have installation problems. See Microsoft’s Quick Assist instructions for current setup guidance.
Keep remote help under the computer owner’s control
A remote session can expose what is on the screen and, if the owner grants it, let the helper control the PC. Make the connection something the relative knowingly starts and approves—not a response to a surprise call, pop-up, or message claiming there is an urgent computer problem.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Arrange the session with your relative and confirm your identity through a separate channel if needed.
- Explain whether you need to view the screen or control the PC, and request only the access needed.
- Do not ask the relative to approve a connection they did not expect. Microsoft warns users to allow connections only with trusted helpers and to be alert to tech-support scams. Its instructions say to contact Microsoft Support directly before connecting with a purported Microsoft support agent.
- Use the family-help desktop app flow. The Quick Assist web app described by Microsoft is for verified Microsoft support agents, not the ordinary family-help route.
- Have your relative end the session when finished. Do not make unattended access the default for troubleshooting together.
When TeamViewer or AnyDesk makes sense
TeamViewer
TeamViewer says its remote-access software is free for personal, non-commercial use. Its product page lists support across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, and describes an invitation- or ID-based connection that requires the receiving device to have the client installed. Those terms fit unpaid family assistance, not paid support or work use. Check TeamViewer’s current product and license information before connecting.
AnyDesk
AnyDesk describes its free personal option as suitable for non-commercial remote access, including helping family and friends. The helper enters the remote device’s ID and requests permission; the product page also describes optional unattended access. The free tier is limited, and repeated or business-like usage may trigger restrictions or upgrade prompts. Do not use it as a way to provide paid support. See AnyDesk’s personal-use terms.
