Google Skills is another option for Google Cloud learning paths and shareable credentials. Google Career Certificates offer a more packaged, project-based program, but in the US and Canada they cost $49 USD per month after a seven-day trial. The best fit depends on your target role, the practice you need, and whether you want a credential or career support—not on an unverified promise of employment.
Compare the platforms and their costs
“Free” can mean access to learning material, not necessarily a free certificate, lab, or professional exam. These official platform descriptions, accessed October 7, 2026, show different kinds of learning rather than a universal ranking.

| Platform | Best suited to | What it offers | Cost and credential notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cisco Networking Academy | Beginner and intermediate networking, cybersecurity, programming, and data learning | Free self-paced courses include Introduction to Cybersecurity, Networking Basics, Python Essentials 1, and Data Analytics Essentials. Cisco also lists network technician and junior cybersecurity analyst paths, plus resume and interview resources. Cisco Networking Academy | The listed courses are described as free. A course completion record is not the same as passing a separate industry certification exam. |
| Microsoft Learn | Guided learning for Microsoft technologies | Self-directed interactive modules and learning paths, along with career paths and credential-aligned training. Microsoft Learn | The training page is a learning resource; check separately for any exam or credential fees. |
| IBM SkillsBuild | Free, multi-topic technology learning | IBM describes the online platform as 100% free, with material aligned to job-market needs and topics including AI, data, cloud, and cybersecurity. IBM SkillsBuild | IBM’s description is a claim about platform learning, not independent evidence of job placement. |
| Google Skills | Google Cloud learning activities, badges, and credential preparation | Learning paths group activities by subject. The site distinguishes shareable certificates and skill badges from proctored Google Cloud certification exams. Google Skills | Google describes a particular no-cost GEAR subscription with 35 monthly hands-on learning credits. That offer does not establish that every course, lab, or exam is free. |
| Google Career Certificates | A structured, project-based route for selected entry-level digital careers | Google describes skills training, hands-on practice, and career resources such as resume tools and mock interviews. Google says the certificates are hosted on Coursera, which is not part of Google or Alphabet. Google Career Certificates | In the US and Canada, Google states a price of $49 USD per month after an initial seven-day trial. Other countries may have lower prices; check local enrollment terms. |
Which platform fits your target role?
Networking or cybersecurity
Start with Cisco if you want named beginner courses and a path organized around roles such as network technician or junior cybersecurity analyst. Its career resources can help with resumes and interviews, but they do not guarantee an interview or job.
Microsoft technology skills
Choose Microsoft Learn if your target role involves Microsoft products and you prefer interactive modules arranged into guided learning paths. Microsoft’s page says it has more than 700,000 job listings seeking candidates with Microsoft technical skills. That is Microsoft’s page claim; it does not say those listings are entry-level or show that completing a particular course causes hiring.

Broad technology topics at no platform cost
IBM SkillsBuild is a practical starting point if you want an online catalog spanning areas such as AI, data, cloud, and cybersecurity. IBM describes the platform as free; its statement alone does not establish employment outcomes.
Google Cloud learning and credentials
Google Skills is designed around Google Cloud learning activities and credential pathways. Check the specific activity or credential before enrolling: a shareable course certificate or skill badge is not the same as a proctored Google Cloud certification exam. Google’s described GEAR offer includes 35 monthly hands-on learning credits, but it is a particular offer rather than a universal benefit of the platform.

A packaged career program
Google Career Certificates may suit learners who want a more structured curriculum with projects and career resources. In the US and Canada, the ongoing subscription price means this is not a fully free route after the initial trial. Google also reports that 75% of program graduates say their career improved within six months of certificate completion. Treat that as a vendor-reported graduate result, not independent proof that the program caused career improvements.

How to choose a course that supports job readiness
- Choose one target role. Be specific—for example, junior cybersecurity analyst, network technician, or a role using Microsoft cloud tools.
- Check several relevant job descriptions. Note recurring tools, technical skills, and expected experience. Use those patterns to identify what to learn rather than collecting unrelated badges.
- Match the learning format to the gap. Look for an appropriate level and a sequenced path if you need structure; prioritize interactive modules, labs, or projects when you need practical experience.
- Check what the credential actually represents. Confirm whether it is a course completion record, a shareable badge or certificate, a professional certificate, or a proctored exam credential. Verify exam charges, regional pricing, and any renewal costs separately.
- Build a work sample. Apply what you learn in a project or practical demonstration you can explain to an employer. Training can help you prepare, but it does not guarantee employment.
- Confirm support and access details. Check whether resume or interview help is included, whether it is available in your region, and whether the course fits your schedule and language needs.
What free learning does—and does not—prove
Course access, badges, and certificates can document learning, but they are not interchangeable with professional certification exams or evidence of job placement. The platforms describe different offerings, and there is no independent, comparable head-to-head employment or salary study establishing that one of these providers gets learners hired more often. Compare the actual skills and practice each path offers, then decide whether its credential and any associated costs suit your goal.
