For most HP Stream owners, Microsoft’s free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are the easiest place to start: they run in a browser, need a Microsoft account, and avoid installing a desktop suite. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are another browser-based option; LibreOffice is the choice here for work that needs a locally installed suite. The right fit depends on your exact Stream model, internet needs, free storage, and whether Windows is in S mode.

Choose based on how you work
If you mainly need everyday documents and spreadsheets
Start with Microsoft’s web apps if you want familiar Word, Excel, or PowerPoint workflows without a desktop installation. You need a Microsoft account, and online cloud use requires internet access. If your work is shared with people using Google tools, try Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides and verify that the sharing and editing features suit the files involved.

If you need locally installed software
LibreOffice is the desktop option in this comparison. Before installing it, check that your Stream has enough free local storage and that your Windows setup permits installation. Microsoft and Google’s browser-based suites avoid the desktop-installer decision, although their cloud-based features depend on being online.
If exact formatting or advanced features matter
Test the actual documents, spreadsheets, and presentations you need to edit. The available product information establishes that the first two suites are browser-based and that LibreOffice supports Windows 10 and 11; it does not establish perfect Microsoft-format fidelity across these suites. Complex layouts, formulas, macros, and presentation effects may need particular scrutiny before you rely on a converted or shared file.

Check your HP Stream before installing a desktop suite
“HP Stream” covers multiple configurations, so a specification from one model is not a safe assumption about another. For example, HP lists Windows 10 Home in S mode and 64 GB eMMC storage for the 11-ak0012dx; the 11-ak0053dx listing specifies Windows 11 Home in S mode, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB eMMC. HP’s Stream 11 Pro G5 datasheet lists 4 GB onboard memory among its configurations. These are model-specific examples, not specifications for every Stream. See HP’s pages for the 11-ak0012dx, 11-ak0053dx, and Stream 11 Pro G5.
- Find the exact model or SKU on the laptop or in Windows system information; use that identifier when checking specifications and support.
- Check free storage before downloading a desktop application. Advertised eMMC capacity is not the same as space available for installing software and keeping files.
- Confirm which Windows version is installed and whether S mode is enabled.
- Try the browser-based option first if you want to avoid an installer or are unsure whether your device can accommodate one.
What S mode means for installing LibreOffice
Microsoft says Windows in S mode allows apps to be installed only from Microsoft Store. If an app you want is not available there, Microsoft says you must permanently switch out of S mode to install it; returning to S mode requires resetting or reloading Windows. Check the current Store listing for the specific app before making that decision. Browser-based office apps do not require installing a desktop suite. Read Microsoft’s S mode FAQ before switching.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Check whether your exact Stream is eligible for an upgrade and whether its operating system remains supported; do not assume every Stream can run Windows 11. Do not look for the old Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Mobile UWP apps as the current Windows solution: Microsoft says those apps are no longer available to download from Microsoft Store and their support ended October 14, 2025.
