For the widest range of advanced mathematics, start with Wolfram|Alpha. It covers symbolic and numerical work from algebra and calculus through differential equations, linear algebra, complex analysis, optimization, statistics and discrete mathematics. Choose Photomath when your problem is on paper and you want a camera scan with guided explanations. Use Symbolab for focused symbolic algebra, calculus and matrix procedures, and use Desmos or GeoGebra when a graph or geometric construction is the main way you need to understand the problem. These tools complement one another; no single free service provides the deepest symbolic engine, best camera input and strongest visualization at the same time.
Which free math solver fits your problem?
The right choice depends less on the word “AI” than on the kind of mathematical evidence you need. A symbolic engine can manipulate an exact expression, a camera-first app can interpret handwriting, and a graphing tool can reveal behavior that a line of algebra hides. Use this quick sequence before opening a solver:

Wolfram|Alpha: the broadest advanced-math starting point
Wolfram|Alpha’s mathematics index describes coverage from “arithmetic, algebra, calculus, differential equations or anything in between.” Its published examples go beyond routine homework: solving Diophantine equations, optimizing functions, performing numerical integration, working with recurrence relations and probability, manipulating matrices, evaluating complex residues and producing two- and three-dimensional plots.
#1 Best Overall

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What it does especially well
- Exact versus numerical work: You can ask for an exact symbolic form when one exists, then request a decimal approximation or plot to inspect its practical behavior.
- Cross-topic range: A single interface can move from an eigenvalue calculation to a probability distribution or a differential equation without changing applications.
- Structured result pages: Entering a well-formed expression often returns several “pods,” such as alternate forms, conditions, plots or numerical values. Those views help you notice domain restrictions that a single answer line would hide.
Free web use versus Pro features
The free web experience should be treated separately from Wolfram|Alpha Pro. Pro lists step-by-step solutions, file and image uploads, downloadable computed data and extended computation time. Those are paid-product capabilities; do not assume that a free query will expose every intermediate transformation or accept an uploaded worksheet.
How to phrase a reliable query
- State the operation and the object: for example, “solve y” – 3y’ + 2y = 0” rather than entering an unlabeled string of symbols.
- Add conditions explicitly, such as an initial value, an integration interval or a variable domain.
- Request the representation you need: exact roots, numerical roots, a real plot, a complex plot or a particular matrix decomposition.
- Read the assumptions and alternate forms before copying an answer. An expression simplified under a hidden nonzero assumption may not be valid at every point in the original problem.
For advanced work, Wolfram|Alpha is usually the best first pass, but a first pass is not a proof. Re-derive critical transitions and test the result in the original equation.
Photomath: the practical camera-and-explanation choice
Photomath is built around scanning a problem, including word problems, and then presenting a guided breakdown. Its product page says, “Our step-by-step explanations help you break down problems so you can learn as you go.” Some problems offer multiple methods, which is useful when your class uses a particular algebraic technique.

What Plus adds
Photomath Plus is listed at $69.99 USD annually or $9.99 USD monthly. The listed additions include custom visual aids and extra “how” and “why” tips. Those prices and features are product-page terms for 2026; taxes, currency conversion and regional availability can differ.
Camera-scan precautions
- Flatten the page and include the complete equation, including fraction bars, exponents and parentheses.
- Inspect every recognized symbol before accepting the solution. A minus sign read as a dash, or a superscript read as a multiplier, changes the problem.
- For word problems, compare the app’s variable definitions with the wording. A correct calculation based on a misread quantity is still the wrong answer.
- When a result looks surprising, type the corrected expression into a symbolic or graphing tool and check it independently.
Symbolab: focused symbolic procedures
Symbolab presents an AI math solver with solution steps, graphing and calculators for integrals, derivatives, algebra, matrices, geometry, word problems and solution checking. It is a strong fit when you already know the mathematical object and want a procedural trail: differentiate a composite function, integrate a rational expression, row-reduce a matrix or inspect a graph of the resulting function.
Use it when the operation is specific
- Calculus: Compare derivative rules, antiderivatives and definite-integral setup.
- Algebra: Follow factoring, equation solving and simplification steps rather than receiving only a final root.
- Matrices: Inspect procedures such as row operations and use the result as a check on hand calculations.
- Geometry and word problems: Translate the statement into equations, then verify that the displayed solution matches the original quantities.
Do not assume every step is free
Symbolab’s public page does not clearly specify every free-tier limit. Availability of detailed steps, ads, saved work or other functions can change, so check the current interface before planning a study workflow around unlimited explanations. If a key step is gated, use the visible result as a checkpoint and reconstruct the algebra yourself rather than treating an unexplained answer as authoritative.
Desmos and GeoGebra: visualization as a second line of reasoning
Desmos and GeoGebra are strongest when the question is “What does this relationship look like?” rather than “What is the final symbolic expression?” Both are free choices for graphing and visual exploration, and both complement a symbolic engine.

Choose Desmos for fast function exploration
Enter a function, add sliders for parameters and inspect intercepts, extrema, intersections and asymptotic behavior. A graph can reveal that a proposed root lies outside the plotted domain, that two curves never meet in the requested interval or that a parameter changes the number of solutions. Use those observations to choose the next algebraic check; a pixel-level intersection is not an exact proof.
Choose GeoGebra for linked geometry and algebra
GeoGebra is particularly useful when points, lines, circles, transformations and equations must remain connected. Drag a construction to test whether a conjectured relationship survives changing coordinates, then record the invariant and prove it symbolically. It is also useful for parameterized curves and surfaces where a static sketch can be misleading.
How visualization catches symbolic mistakes
- Graph the original expression and the proposed solution or residual on the same axes.
- Zoom around discontinuities, endpoints and suspected intersections.
- Change scale and parameter values; a curve that appears to touch at one zoom level may not intersect.
- Return to exact algebra for the final claim, using the plot as evidence about behavior and exceptions.
Best tool by advanced-math task
Differential equations
Start with Wolfram|Alpha for broad equation types and initial-value conditions. Enter the differential equation, identify the independent variable and include every boundary or initial condition. Use a graphing tool to inspect the family of solutions or compare a numerical trajectory with the symbolic form. If the result is only numerical, check residual error by substituting the function back into the differential equation.

Complex analysis
Wolfram|Alpha’s examples include complex residues. State whether you need a residue, contour integral, modulus, argument or a plot in the complex plane. Check poles and the contour’s orientation manually; a computed value is conditional on those definitions.
Calculus and optimization
Use Wolfram|Alpha for multistep or multivariable problems and Symbolab for a focused derivative or integral workflow. For optimization, include constraints and the domain, then test candidate points and boundaries. A stationary point alone does not establish a global maximum or minimum.
Probability and statistics
Wolfram|Alpha can evaluate distributions and probability expressions. Define the random variable, parameters and interval in the query. Check whether the output is a probability mass, density, cumulative probability or expected value; these quantities have different units and interpretations.
Number theory and discrete mathematics
Wolfram|Alpha’s documented examples include Diophantine equations and recurrence relations. State integer or natural-number restrictions explicitly. A numerical root over the reals does not answer an integer-solution question, and a recurrence needs initial values before a unique sequence can be determined.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A verification workflow that works across tools
- Define the problem independently. Write the variables, domains, units and required form before opening an app.
- Enter a clean transcription. Parenthesize denominators and exponents; separate parameters from variables.
- Run a primary solver. Select Wolfram|Alpha for breadth, Photomath for camera input or Symbolab for a targeted symbolic procedure.
- Inspect assumptions and conditions. Look for excluded denominators, branch choices, positivity assumptions and boundary conditions.
- Use a second representation. Graph with Desmos or GeoGebra, or evaluate the expression numerically at test points.
- Substitute back. For equations, insert the candidate into the original; for derivatives, differentiate the proposed antiderivative; for differential equations, compute the residual.
- Check edge cases. Test endpoints, discontinuities, repeated roots, zero parameters and sign changes.
- Write the reasoning in your own notation. Preserve the tool’s output as a check, not as a substitute for explaining why each step is valid.
Free-tier, privacy and assignment-policy decisions
Free does not mean feature-identical
Photomath explicitly lists a $0 Basic tier, while its Plus plan adds visual aids and extra explanations. Wolfram|Alpha Pro lists step-by-step solutions, uploads, downloadable data and extended computation time that are distinct from the free web experience. Symbolab’s page leaves some free limits unspecified. Desmos and GeoGebra provide free core visualization, but feature and account requirements can change. Check the current product screen before relying on a feature for an exam or class project.
Protect sensitive material
Avoid uploading names, student identifiers, unpublished research, test questions covered by a non-disclosure agreement or any other confidential material. Crop a worksheet to the mathematical content, remove metadata where practical and prefer typed input when a camera upload is unnecessary.

Follow course rules
Some instructors allow calculators or graphing tools but require handwritten derivations; others prohibit automated solvers during assessments. Use these services for practice, error checking and visualization only when that use complies with the assignment and exam policy.
Which tool should you use?
- One free starting point for advanced topics: Wolfram|Alpha.
- Photographed or handwritten worksheet: Photomath Basic, with a manual check of the scan.
- Derivative, integral, algebra or matrix procedure: Symbolab, after confirming which steps your account can view.
- Function behavior, intersections or parameter sweeps: Desmos.
- Dynamic geometry or linked algebraic constructions: GeoGebra.
- High-stakes or proof-based work: combine a symbolic result with a graph or numerical test, then verify the definitions and conditions yourself.
No accuracy percentage is established here for ranking these services against one another. Their strengths are different, so the most dependable workflow is often two tools used for different jobs: one to calculate and another to visualize or verify.
