For competitive Fortnite on PC, start with Fullscreen, your monitor’s native resolution, V-Sync off, Performance rendering mode, Near view distance, 100% 3D resolution, Low textures and meshes, and Show FPS on. Epic recommends this as a starting point—not a guaranteed FPS boost or a universal best setup. Adjust one setting at a time and check frame rate, stability, and player visibility on your own system.
Recommended Fortnite settings for competitive play on PC
Epic Games Store’s 2026 competitive guide provides the recommendations below. They prioritize responsiveness and performance, but the best balance depends on your hardware, display, and preferences.

| Setting | Starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Window mode | Fullscreen | Epic recommends Fullscreen to minimize input lag. |
| Resolution | Your monitor’s default resolution | Epic notes that 1920×1080 is common among competitive players; it does not recommend that everyone switch to it. |
| V-Sync | Off | Epic recommends turning it off to minimize input lag. If you see tearing, consider variable refresh rate (VRR) or a frame-rate cap matched to your monitor’s default refresh rate. |
| Rendering mode | Performance | Epic describes Performance Mode as disabling most rendering features to reduce memory use and CPU/GPU load. Restart Fortnite if prompted after changing the mode. |
| Frame-rate limit | Unlimited to start | If unlimited causes tearing, Epic advises matching the limit to your monitor’s default refresh rate. |
| View distance | Near | Epic says players remain clear and visible at Near in Performance Mode. This is Epic’s recommendation, not an independent comparison of visibility. |
| 3D resolution | 100% | If you are not reaching your desired FPS, Epic suggests lowering it in 10% steps. Check that players and important details remain clear after each change. |
| Textures and meshes | Low | Epic’s competitive Performance Mode preset uses Low to reduce detail and prioritize performance. |
| Show FPS | On | Use the counter to observe how changes affect performance on your PC. |
| NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency | On + Boost, if available | This is Epic’s recommendation for systems with an NVIDIA GPU. It is not a universal setting for other GPU brands. |
These are vendor recommendations, not independently controlled benchmark results. Epic’s guidance does not establish a specific FPS increase for a given setting, so use your own in-game counter rather than expecting a particular gain. How to enable Performance Mode
- Open Fortnite’s Video settings.
- Under Display, find Rendering Mode and select Performance.
- Apply the change and restart Fortnite if prompted.
Epic says Performance Mode may increase FPS. The size of any change depends on the individual system; the support guidance does not quantify a typical FPS gain. Epic also says removing High Resolution Textures from the installation saves over 15 GB of disk space, according to its Player Support page accessed in 2026. That is a storage saving, not an FPS measurement. See Epic’s Performance Mode instructions.

How to tune FPS, visibility, and stability
Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. Keep the FPS counter visible and assess both player clarity and smoothness in the situations where you play.
- Begin with the settings in the table and note your usual FPS and any stutter.
- If FPS is below your target, reduce 3D resolution in 10% steps. After each change, check whether opponents and important scene details remain easy to see.
- If you have graphics problems, start with Low quality presets and 100% 3D resolution. If that improves the issue, raise settings gradually until you find a suitable balance between image quality and stability.
- If performance is unexpectedly poor on a laptop or multi-GPU PC, check that Fortnite is using the dedicated or high-performance GPU. Epic’s low-FPS guidance also covers Windows power mode and system setup; the outcome varies by device.
Epic’s troubleshooting advice is available in its graphics-problem guide and its low-frame-rate troubleshooting guide.

Choose anti-aliasing and upscaling options by hardware
Fortnite’s available anti-aliasing and super-resolution choices depend on your hardware and the options shown in the Video menu. Epic lists options that can include TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, FXAA, SMAA, or TAA. Read each in-game description and compare image clarity and performance on your setup; not every option will appear for every player.
Epic’s support page says DLSS setup requires DirectX 12, supported NVIDIA hardware, current Windows and drivers, and an up-to-date Fortnite installation. The same page says AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is not currently an in-game option. Availability can change, so use the options actually present in your current Video menu. Why competitive players usually leave ray tracing off
Epic says ray tracing is unavailable in Performance Mode and significantly reduces frame rates on PC. Its support article recommends leaving it off for competitive play. Treat ray tracing as an image-quality option for supported hardware, not a way to improve performance. See Epic’s ray-tracing support article.

The detailed settings above are for PC and do not map directly to console menus. Epic says PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X receive Lumen global illumination and reflections automatically. Xbox Series S receives a limited version with global illumination but without ray-traced reflections.

For PC, compare options available on your own GPU and display. With V-Sync off, a compatible FreeSync or G-SYNC display can help prevent tearing, but buying a VRR monitor is not required to use these settings. A refresh-matched frame cap is another option Epic advises if an unlimited cap causes tearing.
