Compact OS can save disk space, but it does not always make Windows faster or slower. It stores Windows files in compressed form, reducing the amount of data read from storage while adding CPU work to decompress those files. Which effect matters more depends on your processor, storage device and workload.
What Compact OS changes
Compact OS stores Windows operating-system files in compressed form and lets Windows run from those compressed files. Windows Update can replace or remove individual files as needed to help maintain the smaller footprint. It is a built-in Windows feature, not a separate compression utility.

The performance trade-off is straightforward: Windows may need to read fewer bytes from the drive, but the processor must decompress the files. Microsoft says the result depends on the relative performance of the storage device and processor. A fast CPU paired with slower storage may benefit in storage-bound work; a different device or workload may see no benefit or a slowdown. Microsoft’s guidance is to measure the scenarios that matter: Windows IoT Enterprise Compact OS guidance.

- Potentially helpful: A workload limited by storage reads, where reducing the bytes read outweighs the extra decompression work.
- Potentially slower: A workload where decompression adds CPU work without meaningfully reducing storage delays, particularly if the processor is the limiting component.
- Not decided by SSD alone: Microsoft says relatively new devices should not observe much performance downside, especially with an SSD, in its Windows IoT Enterprise guidance. This is qualified guidance for that context, not a measured guarantee for every consumer Windows PC.
There is no universal performance result or fixed current storage-saving figure that applies across Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. The available quantified Microsoft example is for Windows 10 version 1607 and particular configurations, not a benchmark for a current machine.

How much space Compact OS saved in Microsoft’s example
Microsoft’s Windows 10 version 1607 table reports these example footprints. They describe the listed configurations from that release; they are not current-system estimates or performance tests.
| Windows 10 version 1607 example | x86, 2 GB memory | x64, 4 GB memory |
|---|---|---|
| Base footprint | 11.68 GB | 15.06 GB |
| Compact OS, without single-instancing | 8.85 GB; reported savings greater than 2.75 GB | 11.3 GB; reported savings greater than 3.7 GB |
| Compact OS with single-instancing | 7.66 GB; reported savings greater than 4 GB | 10.09 GB; reported savings greater than 4.75 GB |
| Hiberfile off, without Compact OS | 10.87 GB; reported savings greater than 825 MB | 13.48 GB; reported savings greater than 1.5 GB |
| Reduced hiberfile, without Compact OS | 11.27 GB; reported savings greater than 400 MB | 14.15 GB; reported savings greater than 930 MB |
The single-instancing row combines two space-saving techniques, so its savings should not be attributed to Compact OS alone. Microsoft’s table and its qualifications appear in Compact OS.

How to check or change Compact OS
Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then run the command for the action you want. Microsoft’s Compact command reference applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- To check the current state, run
Compact.exe /CompactOS:query. - To enable Compact OS, run
Compact.exe /CompactOS:always. - To disable it, run
Compact.exe /CompactOS:never.
Query the state before changing it so you know whether Compact OS is already enabled. Enabling or disabling it changes the storage format of Windows files; it does not remove the other storage needs of a Windows installation.

How to decide on your own PC
Compare the same machine with Compact OS on and off, using the apps and tasks you actually care about. Keep the workload and conditions consistent, and record both storage use and responsiveness rather than relying on a single impression.
- Available disk space and Windows footprint.
- Boot and shutdown time.
- Launch time for frequently used apps.
- Disk I/O throughput.
- CPU use during disk reads.
Microsoft points to the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit assessment and performance toolkits, and DiskSpd, as measurement resources in its Compact OS performance guidance. For an everyday decision, begin with repeatable boot, app-launch and storage checks that match your use; specialized tools can help investigate differences you observe.

- Wide compatibility: Compatible with tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required; Reliably stores photos, videos & files
- Compact: Features a push-button retractor and a lanyard loop for on-the-go use
- Enhanced security: Lexar DataShield protects files, easily creates a password-protected safe with auto-encryption; Files deleted from the safe are securely erased and can't be recovered
Compact OS does not remove Windows’ other storage needs
Compressed operating-system files do not eliminate space required for servicing, restore points, logs, caches, RAM-related system files, apps or personal files. Microsoft says 8 GB drives are not large enough for the scenarios described in its Windows footprint guidance: Compact OS and Windows footprint. Treat compression as one way to reduce the OS footprint, not as a substitute for adequate storage capacity.
