You can generate an ER diagram from a live database connection or, in tools that support it, from a database creation script. The resulting diagram maps the tables and declared foreign-key relationships that the tool can import; it will not necessarily reveal relationships enforced only in application code. Start by choosing the right database scope and input, then inspect the diagram for missing links and layout problems.
Choose the database scope before generating the diagram
Decide whether you need a diagram for the whole database, one schema, or a smaller group of connected tables. A whole-database view may be more complete but crowded; a schema-only view can omit references to objects outside that schema.

Check that the tool supports your database system and the metadata you need, then choose a live connection or a schema script as appropriate. These documented workflows are examples, not a guarantee of identical support across every database product or driver.

Generate the ER diagram
From a live database connection
- Identify the database product and the database or schema you want represented.
- In a tool with a connection-based reverse-engineering workflow, connect to the server and select the target database or schema. In MySQL Workbench, use its reverse-engineer live database workflow and filter objects if needed; follow the Workbench documentation for the product’s steps.
- Generate or open the ER diagram. pgAdmin documents generating a diagram from a database, schema, or table; DBeaver documents opening diagrams for existing tables or schemas.
- Inspect which tables and foreign-key links were imported before saving or exporting the result.
From a schema creation script
- Confirm that the script is in a format supported by the modeling tool. MySQL Workbench documents importing a MySQL create script to build a model.
- Import the script into the model rather than assuming the tool will connect to a live server.
- Review the imported objects and relationships, then arrange and save the diagram. See MySQL Workbench’s script-import documentation.
Validate relationships and diagram readability
A generated ERD is a view of the objects and relationships available to the tool’s import or introspection process. Check its coverage rather than treating every absent line as proof that no relationship exists.
- Check scope and filters. Verify the intended database or schemas were included and that object filters did not exclude relevant tables.
- Check declared foreign keys. Confirm expected foreign-key constraints appear as relationship lines. Review cross-schema references especially carefully when using a schema-level pgAdmin diagram.
- Look for application-level relationships. If code or naming conventions connect records without declared foreign keys, the diagram may not show those relationships. Validate them against application behavior or documentation.
- Make the diagram usable. If the view is too crowded, narrow the scope, filter objects, or arrange a smaller connected subset. Preserve a broader view separately if you need the full inventory.
Handle large imports without mistaking a layout warning for a hard limit
MySQL Workbench’s live reverse-engineering documentation warns that importing 250 or more objects may fail to create an EER diagram through automatic placement. It describes selecting fewer objects or creating a diagram manually before importing objects as alternatives. Keep exploration separate from schema changes
Use read-only diagramming when your goal is to understand or document the existing schema. DBeaver diagrams are read-only by default; in edit mode, schema edits can be converted into SQL that may be reviewed and executed. Inspect generated SQL before applying any change to a database.
