Xonotic is the clearest verified native-Linux alternative to Fortnite for players who want fast shooting and online matches without a compatibility layer. Team Xonotic describes it as “The Free and Fast Arena Shooter,” and its official site provides Linux downloads. It is not a replacement for Fortnite’s battle-royale map, construction system, or progression model: Xonotic is a competitive arena first-person shooter.
That distinction matters. Fortnite should not be called a native Linux game. Epic Online Services has described a planned pilot of “EAC Linux v2” in Fortnite, but a planned pilot is not confirmation of a current native Linux release. The guide below separates native Linux games from Windows games that may run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer.

If your non-negotiable requirement is “download a Linux build and play without Proton,” start with Xonotic. If your requirement is specifically a 100-player-style battle royale with construction, the available evidence here does not establish a native Linux substitute that reproduces those mechanics.
What “native Linux” means in this comparison
A native game ships a Linux executable intended to run on Linux. Ubuntu’s Steam documentation explains that Proton is software developed by Valve to run Windows games on Linux through Steam Play; the same guidance says a game that installs and runs without Proton is native and is likely to work best without it.

Valve’s Steam Play support material describes Windows-only games as potentially working on Linux, not as having Linux ports. Valve’s Proton repository likewise identifies Proton as a Steam Play tool built around Wine and related components. Those definitions produce two separate categories:
- Native Linux: the developer or project supplies a Linux build. The operating system runs that build directly.
- Proton: Linux launches the Windows build through Valve’s compatibility technology. The result may be excellent, imperfect or unusable, depending on the game, launcher, updates and anti-cheat.
Do not treat a successful Proton installation as proof that a game is native. For a gaming library, record the status next to every title so a future update does not turn a working setup into a misleading recommendation.

Xonotic is a free, fast arena shooter. Its official site lists Linux downloads, and its FAQ documents a Linux executable while distinguishing that executable from the dedicated-server binary. The project also lists multiple game modes and official maps, giving players more than a single match format.

You can therefore evaluate it without first configuring Steam Play or a Windows launcher.

Where the Fortnite comparison stops
Xonotic is an arena FPS. Matches are built around quick engagements, movement, weapons and map control. Fortnite’s identity includes a large battle-royale structure, scavenging across a persistent map, construction mechanics and a different camera and pacing model. Xonotic does not reproduce that combination.
Choose Xonotic when the priority is responsive multiplayer gunplay on Linux. Do not choose it expecting Fortnite’s building, storm-circle structure, cosmetic ecosystem or battle-royale progression. Calling it “Fortnite for Linux” would set the wrong expectation; “native Linux arena-shooter alternative” is accurate.
How to install and launch Xonotic on Linux
The exact package layout can change, so use the current Linux download and FAQ on the official Xonotic site as the authority for filenames. The following workflow keeps the native status clear and avoids accidentally launching a server binary instead of the client.
- Open the official Xonotic download page. Select the Linux package rather than a Windows or macOS archive.
- Save the archive in a location you control, such as your Downloads directory, then extract it with your distribution’s archive manager.
- Read the included project instructions or FAQ. Identify the Linux game executable; Xonotic’s documentation distinguishes it from the dedicated-server executable.
- Allow the game executable to run. In a graphical file manager, open the file’s properties and enable execution if your desktop marks it as non-executable. From a terminal, use the permission method documented by your distribution and the Xonotic package.
- Launch the client executable, not the dedicated-server binary. The client should open the game’s menus locally before you attempt to join a server.
- Check networking in the game menu. Confirm that the server browser loads and that a test match connects before changing graphics settings.
- Create a desktop or application-menu shortcut only after the first launch succeeds. Point the shortcut at the same client executable so future launches do not depend on the archive manager.
This process does not require Proton. If your distribution blocks an executable, reports a missing library or refuses to open the archive, keep the error message and consult the current Xonotic Linux instructions rather than downloading an unrelated Windows build.

Anti-cheat and multiplayer reliability
Anti-cheat support is separate from graphics support. A game can render correctly under Linux and still block online play because its anti-cheat service does not support the operating system, the compatibility layer or the specific server configuration.
Epic Online Services says Easy Anti-Cheat has supported native Linux clients since 2014 and Windows builds through Wine or Proton since 2021. The same announcement says Epic planned to pilot “EAC Linux v2” in Fortnite. That wording describes work under consideration or testing; it does not guarantee that a current Fortnite Linux client is available, that Fortnite’s live servers accept Linux players, or that every anti-cheat mode works through Proton.

Fortnite on Linux: what is and is not confirmed
Fortnite itself should not be listed as a native Linux recommendation. Epic’s announcement is useful because it explains the anti-cheat direction, but its reference to a planned EAC Linux v2 pilot is not a release notice.
There are three separate questions:
- Does a Linux executable exist? The cited information does not confirm a current native Fortnite client.
- Can the Windows build start through Proton? Proton can run many Windows games, but the supplied evidence does not verify Fortnite’s current launcher, anti-cheat and live-service behavior.
- Can you join official multiplayer servers? Anti-cheat policy and server acceptance can change without a graphics or launcher update, so this must be verified for the exact current build.
Consequently, “Can I play Fortnite without Windows?” has no unconditional answer from the available evidence. Linux users should not plan a system migration around the announced pilot. Treat any third-party compatibility report as version-specific and confirm the game’s current policy before relying on it.

Proton is useful when your priority is access to a particular Windows game rather than a native executable. In Steam, Proton is selected per game through Steam Play. The compatibility layer translates or supplies the Windows interfaces the game expects; it does not convert the game into a Linux port.

- You already own the Windows build in a Steam library.
- The game’s publisher and anti-cheat provider explicitly support Linux or Proton for the current release.
- You are comfortable retesting after game, driver or Proton updates.
- You can accept that troubleshooting may involve launch options, runtime versions or community fixes.
When native Linux is preferable
- You want the fewest compatibility variables.
- You need a game to work without Steam or a Windows launcher.
- You play competitive multiplayer where anti-cheat policy is critical.
- You want the project’s own Linux documentation and executable to be the support baseline.

Ubuntu-specific decision guide
Ubuntu users often ask for a single Fortnite replacement because Ubuntu is a common Linux gaming desktop. The operating system does not change the genre trade-off. Install Xonotic using its Linux package, confirm that the client starts, and test multiplayer. If you instead investigate a Windows title through Steam, follow Ubuntu’s Steam Play guidance and record which Proton tool is enabled. Before choosing, answer these questions:
- Do you require native binaries? If yes, Xonotic is the verified choice in this comparison.

Finally, judge community activity by the servers and modes you can actually reach from your location and at your usual play time. No authoritative population number is established here, so a precise-looking player count would be less useful than a direct connection test.
