Best Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Graphics and Performance Settings on PS5

Use Graphics Mode on a standard PS5 if image clarity, detailed environments and cinematic cutscenes matter most. Use Performance Mode if responsive combat and camera movement matter more, accepting a visibly softer image. On PS5 Pro, install the latest update and try Versatility Mode first: Square Enix designed it to combine Performance Mode-like fluidity with Graphics Mode-like resolution through PSSR.

Quick recommendation

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gives PS5 players a direct choice between visual detail and motion response. PlayStation describes Graphics Mode as prioritizing 4K graphics and Performance Mode as prioritizing smooth action at 60 frames per second. You make the choice in the game’s options menu.

Mode Console Motion and control Image presentation Best for Main compromise
Graphics Mode Base PS5 or PS5 Pro Cinematic, 30-fps-style presentation Sharper, higher-detail image aimed at 4K output Story playthroughs, large 4K televisions, screenshots and cutscenes Less fluid camera movement and input response than a 60-fps mode
Performance Mode Base PS5 or PS5 Pro Targets 60 frames per second for more responsive control Softer reconstruction, especially noticeable on a 4K screen Combat, action, camera movement and players sensitive to 30-fps judder Lower perceived sharpness than Graphics Mode
Versatility Mode PS5 Pro with version 1.050 or later Designed to retain Performance Mode-like fluidity Uses PSSR to target resolution comparable to Graphics Mode PS5 Pro owners who want one balanced setting It requires the Pro update and remains a compromise rather than two independent modes at once

A 120-Hz television or monitor can present 60-fps output cleanly, but it does not unlock a different mode or raise the game’s frame-rate target. The console and the selected in-game mode still determine the result.

Graphics or Performance Mode on a standard PS5?

Choose Graphics Mode for the clearest image

Graphics Mode is the better choice when you notice softness, shimmering or unstable fine detail in Performance Mode. Its higher-resolution presentation makes character faces, foliage, distant geometry and architecture look more defined, particularly on a large 4K television. It also suits a first, story-focused playthrough in which environments, cinematics and visual composition are more important than the quickest possible camera response.

The trade-off is motion. A 30-fps-style presentation is less fluid when you rotate the camera or move through the open world, and controls do not feel as immediate as they do at 60 fps. That difference is most obvious when switching directly between modes rather than judging either mode in isolation.

Choose Performance Mode for responsive combat

Performance Mode prioritizes a 60-fps target. Faster camera movement, dodging, parrying and character control feel more immediate, which can make real-time encounters easier to read and react to. If 30-fps judder bothers you, or if you play close to the screen, this is usually the more comfortable option.

The cost is image quality. Specialist technical coverage from Digital Foundry characterizes the base-PS5 choice as a substantial visual compromise in Performance Mode, while Graphics Mode preserves a considerably sharper presentation. Treat any exact internal-resolution numbers quoted in third-party analysis as estimates, not as guaranteed specifications: Square Enix’s official descriptions define each mode by its priority rather than publishing a fixed render resolution.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Start the game and open the options menu.
  2. Select Graphics Mode and walk through a detailed outdoor area. Look at distant foliage, signs, hair and thin geometry while moving the camera.
  3. Switch to Performance Mode in the same area. Perform a few camera turns and a combat encounter.
  4. Ask which change bothers you more: reduced sharpness or reduced motion response.
  5. Keep the mode that solves the larger problem for your eyes and hands. There is no universal winner on the base PS5.

PS5 Pro: start with Versatility Mode

Square Enix added Versatility Mode for PS5 Pro in version 1.050. The official game description says it combines the characteristics of Performance Mode and Graphics Mode with PSSR, Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution reconstruction technology. Square Enix Japan described the goal in its 2024 PS5 Pro notice as enabling both “fluid motion at 60 fps in Performance Mode” and “high resolution equivalent to Graphics Mode.”

Install the required update

  1. Highlight Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Press the Options button on the controller.
  3. Choose Check for Update and allow version 1.050 or a later patch to install.
  4. Launch the game, open the options menu and select Versatility Mode.
  5. Replay a familiar area for several minutes before judging the result; reconstruction quality is easier to assess in motion than from a paused menu.

Versatility Mode is the sensible first setting for a Pro owner who wants one balanced presentation. Graphics Mode remains valid if you prefer a strictly cinematic look and do not mind the slower presentation. Performance Mode remains available if motion clarity and control are your highest priorities.

What PSSR does—and does not—mean here

PSSR is the reconstruction method Square Enix cites for Versatility Mode. It does not turn the game into a native-4K, 60-fps title by definition, and the official material does not publish a fixed internal resolution or a frame-time guarantee. Judge the mode by the visible result on your display rather than by assuming that a label promises identical output to two separate modes simultaneously.

How to change the setting

The mode selection is made from the game’s options menu, not from the PS5 system’s video-output page. Menu wording can vary slightly by language and patch, but the procedure is straightforward:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pause the game or return to the title screen.
  2. Open Options.
  3. Find the display, graphics or image-quality section containing the mode choices.
  4. Select Graphics Mode, Performance Mode or, on an updated PS5 Pro, Versatility Mode.
  5. Return to gameplay and test the same scene before deciding whether to keep the change.

If a mode is missing, first confirm the console model and installed update. Versatility Mode is a PS5 Pro feature introduced with version 1.050; it is not a base-PS5 option.

How to fix blurry Performance Mode

On a standard PS5, some softness in Performance Mode is expected. It is the consequence of prioritizing a 60-fps target over the sharper presentation used by Graphics Mode. No television setting can make the base-PS5 Performance Mode image identical to Graphics Mode.

Check whether the softness is normal

  1. Switch between Performance Mode and Graphics Mode in the same location.
  2. Inspect foliage, distant objects, hair and thin lines while the camera is moving.
  3. If Performance Mode is consistently softer but gameplay is smooth, you are seeing the documented mode trade-off rather than a fault.
  4. If the image is suddenly much blurrier than it was previously, continue with the checks below.

Install the current game patch

Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press Options and choose Check for Update. Square Enix has issued visual-fidelity improvements for Performance Mode, so an unpatched installation may not match the current presentation. Patch behavior can change over time; allow the download and installation to finish before comparing modes.

Verify the console’s video output

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on PS5 and confirm that the console is communicating with the television at its available 4K output. If you use an AV receiver, switch or capture device, temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the display to rule out an intermediary limiting the signal. Exact labels and available choices depend on the television and HDMI hardware.

Remove display processing that exaggerates artifacts

Television picture modes with aggressive sharpening, noise reduction or motion interpolation can make reconstructed game images look harsher or less stable. Use the display’s game-oriented picture preset, then compare the same scene with those extra processors reduced or disabled. This does not increase the game’s render resolution; it only avoids adding processing that can emphasize shimmer, halos or softness.

Use the mode that matches your screen distance

Softness is easier to see on a large 4K screen viewed from close range. If the compromise remains distracting after updating and checking the signal, select Graphics Mode. If the image is acceptable once you sit at your normal viewing distance and the smoother controls are valuable, keep Performance Mode.

PS5 Pro alternative

On PS5 Pro, install version 1.050 or later and test Versatility Mode. Its stated purpose is to preserve Performance Mode-like fluidity while bringing resolution closer to Graphics Mode through PSSR. If the reconstructed image still does not meet your preference, Graphics Mode is the clarity-first fallback.

How display hardware affects what you see

4K televisions

A large 4K screen makes the difference between the two base-PS5 modes easier to notice because you can resolve more fine detail and more clearly see reconstruction artifacts. That does not make Graphics Mode objectively correct; it simply increases the visibility of its sharpness advantage and Performance Mode’s softness.

120-Hz televisions and monitors

A 120-Hz panel is useful for presenting a 60-fps signal with even refresh timing. It does not change Rebirth‘s selected mode, convert Graphics Mode to 60 fps or guarantee a higher frame-rate target. Treat the panel as a way to display the chosen output cleanly, not as a hidden performance upgrade.

Smaller screens and longer viewing distances

When you sit farther away or use a smaller display, the sharpness difference can be less obvious. In that situation, Performance Mode’s control response may provide more noticeable value than the additional detail in Graphics Mode. Your normal seating position matters more than the television’s marketing label.

Settings by player priority

Your priority Recommended setting Why
Maximum environmental and character detail Graphics Mode It prioritizes the higher-resolution, more cinematic presentation.
Fast camera movement and combat response Performance Mode It prioritizes a 60-fps target and more immediate control.
30-fps judder is distracting Performance Mode The smoother target is likely to be more comfortable than sharper but slower motion.
First story-focused playthrough on a large 4K display Graphics Mode Fine detail, scenes and cutscenes receive priority.
PS5 Pro owner wanting one balanced choice Versatility Mode after updating It is specifically designed to combine the two priorities with PSSR.
PS5 Pro owner who wants the cleanest still image Graphics Mode Versatility Mode is a balance; Graphics Mode remains the clarity-first option.

What the official specifications do—and do not—establish

PlayStation’s official description establishes the priorities: Graphics Mode targets 4K graphics, while Performance Mode targets smooth action at 60 frames per second. Square Enix’s update information records visual-fidelity improvements when Performance Mode is selected. Square Enix’s current game page identifies version 1.050 as the update that added Versatility Mode on PS5 Pro, and Square Enix Japan explains that PSSR is intended to combine 60-fps fluidity with resolution equivalent to Graphics Mode.

Those descriptions do not provide a single guaranteed internal-resolution figure, a universal frame-time measurement or a promise that every scene will look identical on every television. Third-party technical analysis can help explain why one mode looks softer, but estimated internal resolutions should not be treated as official specifications.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing based only on the word “4K.” Graphics Mode’s sharper image comes with slower motion; Performance Mode’s 60-fps priority can make play feel better even when its image is softer.
  • Assuming a 120-Hz display creates a new mode. It only presents the selected output; it does not alter the game’s rendering choice.
  • Comparing modes in different scenes. Use the same location, camera angle and movement so you are judging the mode rather than the scene.
  • Expecting a TV sharpness slider to restore missing detail. Excessive sharpening can add halos and shimmer but cannot recreate the detail sacrificed for the 60-fps target.
  • Looking for Versatility Mode on a base PS5. The option requires a PS5 Pro and the update that introduced it.
  • Treating third-party resolution estimates as guarantees. Official sources describe priorities, not a fixed internal resolution for every scene.

Recommended setup checklist

  • Install the latest Final Fantasy VII Rebirth update before comparing modes.
  • Confirm whether your console is a base PS5 or PS5 Pro.
  • Use Graphics Mode when sharpness and cinematic presentation outrank motion response.
  • Use Performance Mode when combat control, camera fluidity or sensitivity to 30-fps judder outrank image detail.
  • On PS5 Pro, test Versatility Mode first after version 1.050 or later is installed.
  • Compare modes in the same scene and at your normal viewing distance.
  • Use a 120-Hz display if you want an appropriate panel for 60-fps output, but do not expect it to change the selected mode.
  • If Performance Mode looks unexpectedly blurry, update the game, verify the PS5’s 4K output path and reduce display processing before deciding whether the normal softness is unacceptable.

Final verdict

For a standard PS5, Graphics Mode is the best graphics setting for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when you want the sharpest image and most cinematic presentation. Performance Mode is the better performance setting when responsive 60-fps control matters more than clarity. Neither is universally superior. On PS5 Pro, Versatility Mode is the strongest starting point because Square Enix built it specifically to bridge those priorities with PSSR; switch to Graphics or Performance only when your own display and play style clearly favor one side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Final Fantasy VII Rebirth run at 60 fps in Graphics Mode?

Graphics Mode prioritizes the higher-resolution presentation rather than the 60-fps target. Performance Mode is the mode officially described as prioritizing smooth action at 60 frames per second.

Can I make base-PS5 Performance Mode as sharp as Graphics Mode?

No. Some softness is inherent to Performance Mode’s rendering compromise. Updating the game, checking the 4K signal and reducing excessive television processing can prevent extra degradation, but only Graphics Mode provides the sharper presentation.

Is Versatility Mode available on the original PS5?

No. Versatility Mode was added for PS5 Pro in version 1.050 and later updates. Base PS5 systems have Graphics Mode and Performance Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a 120-Hz TV increase the game’s frame rate?

No. A 120-Hz display can present 60-fps output appropriately, but it does not change the mode selected in the game or raise its frame-rate target.

Should I use Graphics or Performance Mode for a first playthrough?

Use Graphics Mode if your priority is environments, characters and cutscenes on a large 4K display. Use Performance Mode if responsive combat and camera movement, or avoiding 30-fps judder, matter more.
