Best External Cron Job Services Compared (2026)

Compare three external cron approaches: hosted HTTP scheduling with cron-job.org, Google Cloud Scheduler for Google targets, and Amazon EventBridge Scheduler for AWS tasks.

The best external cron service depends on what the scheduled task needs to reach. For a straightforward HTTP request, cron-job.org is a hosted option with execution history and notifications. For tasks tied to Google Cloud or AWS, the native schedulers can invoke cloud targets directly. Choose the operating model first, then compare scheduling, delivery behavior, visibility, and cost.

What “external cron” means—and why it matters

An external cron service runs on a hosted platform rather than on the server running your application. But the phrase covers two different patterns:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Hosted HTTP scheduler: sends a request to a URL on a schedule. This is a direct fit when the work can be started through an HTTP endpoint.
  • Cloud-native scheduler: invokes a platform target or API, such as a messaging service or a cloud application. This fits work already integrated with that provider’s environment.

These patterns are not interchangeable. A URL-triggered service may be simpler for a basic web task; a cloud scheduler may avoid adding an HTTP endpoint when the work already belongs inside a cloud platform. That is an architectural distinction, not a measured usability or reliability ranking.

Quick comparison

Service Best fit Scheduling and targets Visibility and controls Published cost information
cron-job.org Scheduled calls to websites or scripts Predefined or custom schedules; service page says frequencies up to once per minute and customizable HTTP requests Execution history, test runs, status notifications, monitoring features, status pages, and a REST API, according to the service page Service page says “Absolutely free”; verify current limits and terms
Google Cloud Scheduler Google Cloud workloads and supported HTTP/S, Pub/Sub, or App Engine targets Unix-cron schedules with a selectable time zone At-least-once delivery; configurable retries with exponential backoff Google Cloud’s 2026 published example: three jobs per billing account per month free, then $0.10 per job per 31 days
Amazon EventBridge Scheduler Scheduled AWS service API tasks Recurring cron or rate expressions and one-time invocations Flexible time windows, retry limits, and retention settings for failed API invocations Not stated in the cited overview

Features and prices can change. The table reflects the cited provider pages; it is not an independent reliability test or a complete market ranking.

Which service fits your workload?

cron-job.org for scheduled HTTP requests

Consider cron-job.org when the task is already exposed as a website or script endpoint and you want a hosted interface for scheduling it. Its service page describes customizable HTTP requests, test runs, execution history, and status notifications. Confirm the current frequency limits, notification behavior, and support expectations before relying on it for a critical workflow.

cron-job.org also says it has operated for over 15 years and executes millions of cron jobs every day. Those are vendor-reported claims on its 2026 service page, not independently audited uptime or reliability measurements.

Google Cloud Scheduler for Google Cloud and supported targets

Cloud Scheduler supports HTTP/S endpoints, Pub/Sub topics, and App Engine applications. It is worth evaluating when the target is one of these or when the workload benefits from Google Cloud integration. Its delivery model has an important consequence: Google documents at-least-once delivery, so a scheduled execution can result in duplicate invocations. The target should be idempotent—that is, safely handle the same request more than once without performing the operation twice.

Retries are configurable and use exponential backoff. The documented default retry count is zero, so do not assume failed jobs will automatically be retried; choose and configure a policy that matches the task.

Amazon EventBridge Scheduler for AWS API tasks

EventBridge Scheduler supports recurring cron and rate expressions as well as one-time invocations. Its flexible time windows and retry and retention controls are useful when an AWS API task should run within a window rather than at one exact instant, or when failed invocations need configured handling.

AWS says the service can schedule millions of tasks targeting more than 270 AWS services and over 6,000 API operations. These are AWS-published capacity and coverage figures for 2026, not an uptime guarantee or proof that a particular workload is suitable. AWS recommends Scheduler over older EventBridge scheduled rules in its user guide.

Scheduling, time zones, and daylight saving

Cloud Scheduler supports Unix-cron syntax and a selectable time zone. A schedule defined in local wall-clock time can behave unexpectedly when daylight saving time changes: a run may occur unexpectedly or not occur, depending on the transition and schedule. Google recommends UTC when a very specific cadence matters. If a task must follow local business hours, decide how it should behave at clock changes and test that schedule rather than assuming every local time occurs once each day.

EventBridge Scheduler offers cron and rate expressions, along with one-time schedules. cron-job.org describes predefined and custom schedules. Check each service’s current scheduling and timezone documentation for the exact expression rules and edge cases you need; the cited pages do not establish a single syntax that works identically across all three.

Retries, duplicate work, and monitoring are different concerns

A retry policy governs what happens after a failed delivery or invocation. Monitoring and notifications help you notice or investigate execution outcomes. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other.

  • For Cloud Scheduler, build idempotency into the target because at-least-once delivery can produce duplicates. Configure retries deliberately; the documented default count is zero.
  • For EventBridge Scheduler, configure retry limits and failed-invocation retention to match the task’s recovery needs.
  • For cron-job.org, the service page lists execution history and status notifications. Those visibility features do not, by themselves, establish a delivery guarantee.

How to choose

  1. Identify the target. If the task can be started by an HTTP request, evaluate a hosted HTTP scheduler such as cron-job.org. If it should call a Google Cloud target or an AWS service API, start with that platform’s scheduler.
  2. Choose the timing model. Decide whether you need a recurring cron expression, a fixed-rate interval, a one-time run, or a local-time schedule that must account for daylight saving changes.
  3. Plan for failure and duplicates. Determine how the task handles repeated requests, how failures should be retried, and what recovery information must be retained.
  4. Check operational visibility. Confirm that the history, notifications, and failure details available in the service are enough for whoever will troubleshoot the task.
  5. Compare current costs and limits. Google publishes per-job pricing and a free-job allowance; cron-job.org describes its service as free. Verify current terms and any workload limits directly with the provider. The cited AWS overview does not state a price.

What this comparison does not establish

The available provider documentation supports a focused comparison of these three services, not a complete ranking of every hosted cron product. It does not establish comparative uptime, service-level agreement superiority, or independent performance results. A heartbeat monitor can report whether a job appears to run, but monitoring a job is not the same as scheduling and executing it; verify the capabilities of any monitoring product separately.
