A useful bathroom concept model describes more than what is in the room. It connects activities to the objects and infrastructure that support them, records where those things belong and how they relate, and marks conditions to avoid. Start with what a person does in the bathroom, then add the fixtures, spatial relationships, materials, boundaries, and constraints needed to describe it.
Start with activities, not a fixture list
Try it yourself: without looking at a picture of a bathroom, describe one in writing. You may begin by naming a sink, toilet, and shower. To make that description a concept model, ask what people do in the room and what each activity requires.

- Wash hands or face and brush teeth: a sink, a faucet connected to a water supply, and a drain. A stopper may allow the basin to hold water; the faucet should allow the user to adjust water temperature. Soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and perhaps a cup also need places.
- Use the toilet: a toilet, toilet paper, and a holder for the paper. The model might also include a tool for unclogging the toilet.
- Shower: a shower with a water supply and adjustable temperature, plus a drain for the shower area.
- Use the room safely and comfortably: lighting and a door for entering and leaving. Showering introduces moisture, so the example includes either a window to the outside or a vent.
This activity-first approach helps explain why an object belongs in the model, rather than treating the room as an arbitrary collection of things.
Add the elements an initial inventory can miss
An early list is likely to be incomplete. In the bathroom example in “Building a Concept Model: The Bathroom”, the author identifies a mirror in front of the sink and cabinets for towels and toilet paper as omissions. The example also raises covered outlets near the toilet and a door condition that might allow overflow water to escape.

These are prompts for a model, not universal building requirements. A concept model can record such features as questions or possible elements without claiming that every bathroom needs them or that a particular arrangement meets local rules.
Describe relationships as well as objects
A list can contain all the right objects and still describe a dysfunctional room. The source illustrates this with a deliberately “weird” bathroom: the towel bar is under the shower outlet, supplies are difficult to reach, the sink faces the wrong way, a shower control is on the floor, and the oversized room is visually exposed.

Those problems arise from relationships that an inventory leaves unstated. One practical way to organize the model is to describe:
- Function: which activities a fixture supports, such as a sink for washing and brushing or a shower for bathing.
- Connections: which elements supply or carry away water, such as a faucet connected to water supply and a basin connected to drainage.
- Placement and reach: where objects belong relative to one another, such as a mirror in front of a sink and supplies within reach where they are used.
- Orientation and height: which direction a fixture faces and whether controls are positioned where a user can reach them.
- Exposure and separation: whether towels and toilet paper are outside the shower’s water path, and whether the door provides privacy and can be locked.
- Materials and boundaries: the floor, walls, ceiling, and surfaces that define the room and contain water and moisture.
- Negative constraints: conditions the design must prevent, such as placing paper or towels where shower water reaches them.
As the author puts it, “A bathroom can’t be just a list of simple elements. It also has to be described how far apart the elements should be, at what height, and facing which direction.”

Make constraints explicit
Desired features say what the room should contain; constraints say what must or must not be true about those features. For example, a model can say that towels need a place near the shower while also specifying that they must not sit beneath the shower outlet. It can represent a temperature-adjustable control while recording that the control should be reachable rather than on the floor.
Writing down these relationships makes the model more useful for discussion, planning, or later design work. It also distinguishes a concept-level statement—such as “keep paper out of the shower’s water path”—from a technical specification about dimensions or construction, which this example does not provide.

Keep alternatives separate from decisions
The bathroom example offers a window to the outside or a vent as ways to address moisture from showering. A concept model can preserve both as alternatives without pretending to choose between them. The source provides no comparison of their performance, cost, energy use, or installation, so selecting an option requires context and evidence beyond this example. A vent may be represented as a possible element; the example does not establish that every bathroom needs an exhaust fan or specify how one should be installed.

The bathroom is an illustrative exercise in recording intent: activities, required elements, relationships, boundaries, and avoided conditions. It is not a bathroom design standard or a product guide. Its observations about outlets, doors, drainage, and ventilation do not substitute for jurisdiction-specific electrical, plumbing, accessibility, moisture-control, or building-code guidance.

That distinction matters whenever a model moves toward a real renovation. The model can reveal questions—where water goes, what must stay dry, what users need to reach—but it cannot establish code compliance, safe installation, or the right technical solution on its own.
