Short answer: choose the replacement according to the risk you are trying to remove. EEM is the broad emerging-markets baseline, but it still owns substantial China, Taiwan and South Korea and does not apply a specific Indonesia-exclusion rule. EMXC is the clearest U.S.-listed choice when China is the exposure you want gone, although Taiwan and South Korea together represented 60.64% of its market value on 2026-10-13. If you also want to remove Taiwan, use an ETF tracking an MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ex Taiwan index where one is listed and available to you; that framework is much more concentrated in South Korea and India. A global ex-Indonesia index is a different solution, not a substitute for an emerging-markets sleeve.
Start with the exposure you actually want to replace
“Replace Indonesia” can mean several different portfolio jobs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Keep a normal emerging-markets allocation but avoid adding a dedicated Indonesia position.
- Remove China for regulatory, geopolitical or portfolio-policy reasons while retaining other emerging markets.
- Remove both China and Taiwan, accepting that the remaining index will be dominated by South Korea and India.
- Eliminate Indonesia from the entire global equity allocation, including developed markets.
Those objectives produce different funds. No broad emerging-markets ETF should be assumed to exclude Indonesia simply because Indonesia is a small weight on a particular date. Index providers can add, remove or resize countries during reviews, and market movements change weights between reviews. Check the current country table, index methodology and holdings before trading.
Best choices by objective
| Investor objective | Most direct framework | What you accept |
|---|---|---|
| Broad EM exposure after reducing a standalone Indonesia position | EEM, a broad large- and mid-cap emerging-markets fund | Large China, Taiwan and South Korea allocations; no stated Indonesia-exclusion policy |
| Broad EM exposure with China removed | EMXC | Very high Taiwan and South Korea weights and nearly half the portfolio in information technology |
| China and Taiwan both removed | An ETF tracking MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ex Taiwan | Heavy South Korea and India concentration; availability depends on listing and jurisdiction |
| Indonesia removed from a global portfolio | MSCI ACWI ex Indonesia implementation | Developed-market exposure as well as emerging markets; not a pure EM replacement |
| Non-U.S. or UCITS access to broad EM exposure | A locally available EM UCITS fund, such as the Invesco fund described below | China, Taiwan and Korea remain; domicile, tax and distribution restrictions vary |
For many investors, the practical decision is between EEM and EMXC. EEM preserves a conventional emerging-markets mix. EMXC is more targeted if China is the unwanted exposure, but it is not a low-concentration alternative.

EEM: broad emerging-markets baseline
What the fund is designed to do
BlackRock describes EEM as a fund tracking an index of large- and mid-cap companies from emerging-market countries, intended to provide broad and diversified emerging-markets equity exposure. That makes it a reasonable replacement for a single-country Indonesia allocation when your goal is to restore geographic breadth rather than to make a new country bet.
Country and cost snapshot
| Item | EEM value | Measurement date or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | 29.25% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| China | 20.39% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| South Korea | 17.98% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| India | 11.46% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| Brazil | 4.89% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| South Africa | 3.11% | Geography reported 2026-10-15 |
| Expense ratio | 0.72% | BlackRock/iShares figure reported in 2026 |
The listed countries already explain why EEM is not a clean Indonesia substitute. Taiwan, China and South Korea together were 67.62% on the stated date. Much of the portfolio’s behavior can therefore be driven by those markets, especially technology and semiconductor companies, rather than by Southeast Asian domestic growth.
When EEM fits
- You want one liquid, broad EM allocation instead of a country-specific holding.
- You are comfortable retaining China and Taiwan.
- You value a familiar large- and mid-cap benchmark more than an explicit Indonesia screen.
When EEM does not fit
- Your investment policy requires China to be zero.
- You want both China and Taiwan excluded.
- You are trying to control semiconductor or East Asian concentration.
- You need an independently verified Indonesia exclusion; EEM’s stated objective does not provide one.
EMXC: the clearest China-exclusion route
What it removes and what remains
EMXC is designed to remove China while retaining broad emerging-markets exposure. BlackRock’s country data dated 2026-10-13 showed Taiwan at 36.73%, South Korea at 23.91%, India at 13.72%, Brazil at 6.05%, South Africa at 3.74%, Saudi Arabia at 2.92% and Mexico at 2.06%.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| EMXC concentration measure | Weight | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | 36.73% | The largest country exposure after China is removed |
| South Korea | 23.91% | Second-largest country exposure |
| Taiwan plus South Korea | 60.64% | Combined market-value concentration on 2026-10-13 |
| Information technology | 49.92% | Nearly half the portfolio was in this sector |
| Financials | 19.72% | Second-largest reported sector |
Removing China does not produce a neutral emerging-markets basket. It mechanically increases the relative share of the countries left in the index, particularly Taiwan and South Korea. The 49.92% information-technology allocation also means that EMXC can behave more like a concentrated technology and semiconductor portfolio than a balanced representation of every emerging economy.
Ratings are not a forward-looking guarantee
BlackRock reported a five-star Morningstar rating for EMXC as of 2026-09-30, compared with 689 diversified emerging-markets funds. Morningstar ratings summarize historical risk-adjusted performance; they do not forecast returns, guarantee outperformance or remove the concentration risks shown above.

When EMXC fits
- Your principal requirement is zero or near-zero China exposure.
- You can tolerate substantial Taiwan, South Korea and technology exposure.
- You prefer a U.S.-listed implementation and have confirmed that its current holdings meet your policy.
Checks to make before using EMXC as an Indonesia replacement
- Open the latest holdings and confirm the Indonesia weight. The China-exclusion rule does not, by itself, establish that Indonesia is excluded.
- Check the fund’s current country and sector tables because the figures above are snapshots from 2026-10-13.
- Compare the quoted trading spread and assets with your order size, not only the stated expense ratio.
Ex-China ex-Taiwan: more targeted, more concentrated
Index composition
MSCI’s Emerging Markets ex China ex Taiwan Index factsheet dated 2026-09-30 listed 515 constituents. Country weights were South Korea 41.75%, India 20.78%, Brazil 7.97%, South Africa 5.71% and Saudi Arabia 4.49%. Sector weights were information technology 31.66% and financials 25.04%.
| Country or sector | Weight in MSCI EM ex China ex Taiwan | Factsheet date |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea | 41.75% | 2026-09-30 |
| India | 20.78% | 2026-09-30 |
| Brazil | 7.97% | 2026-09-30 |
| South Africa | 5.71% | 2026-09-30 |
| Saudi Arabia | 4.49% | 2026-09-30 |
| Information technology | 31.66% | 2026-09-30 |
| Financials | 25.04% | 2026-09-30 |
This is the most precise framework for an investor who specifically wants China and Taiwan out. It is not a broad, country-neutral replacement: South Korea and India together accounted for 62.53% of the index on the factsheet date. An ETF may also differ from the index because of sampling, fees, tax, trading costs and implementation choices.

Index history and back-testing caveat
MSCI launched the index on 2021-06-17. Performance figures before that launch date are back-tested rather than live index history. Treat any fund’s live record, tracking difference and trading liquidity as separate evidence when evaluating an implementation.
Availability is not universal
The factsheet describes an index, not a guarantee that an ETF exists on your exchange. Search by the exact index name, then verify the fund’s ticker, share class, domicile, currency, dealing hours, distribution policy and eligibility in your country. A locally listed product may have different withholding-tax and reporting consequences from a U.S.-listed fund.
A global ex-Indonesia index solves a different problem
MSCI’s ACWI ex Indonesia Index is a conceptual reference when the mandate is to remove Indonesia from a whole global portfolio. The index covers 2,405 large- and mid-cap constituents across 23 developed-market and 23 emerging-market countries, representing approximately 85% of the global investable equity opportunity set.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

That breadth is the key distinction. An ACWI ex Indonesia implementation includes developed markets such as the United States, Japan and European markets alongside emerging markets. It can replace an Indonesia exposure in a global strategic allocation, but it does not replace the emerging-markets sleeve one-for-one. Before using it, decide whether your target allocation is global equities ex Indonesia or emerging-market equities ex Indonesia.
UCITS implementation and regional access
An Invesco MSCI Emerging Markets UCITS ETF factsheet dated 2026-09-30 reported Taiwan at 28.9%, South Korea at 21.4%, China at 19.5%, India at 10.7%, Brazil at 4.0% and South Africa at 2.5%. Its largest named exposures included Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing at 15.63%, Samsung Electronics at 7.55% and SK Hynix at 5.90%.
| Reported exposure | Weight |
|---|---|
| Taiwan | 28.9% |
| South Korea | 21.4% |
| China | 19.5% |
| India | 10.7% |
| Brazil | 4.0% |
| South Africa | 2.5% |
| Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing | 15.63% |
| Samsung Electronics | 7.55% |
| SK Hynix | 5.90% |
This illustration shows why a broad EM UCITS fund is not automatically an Indonesia-exclusion fund and why single-company concentration deserves attention. The factsheet warns that distribution restrictions apply in some jurisdictions, so confirm investor eligibility and local listing before placing an order.
How to compare candidate ETFs correctly
Use one consistent measurement date wherever possible. A fund with an older factsheet can look safer or cheaper simply because the data was captured under different market conditions.
- Indonesia rule: determine whether Indonesia is explicitly excluded, merely small, or not addressed by the index methodology.
- Country mix: record China, Taiwan, South Korea, India and any other country that could dominate returns.
- Sector mix: check information technology, financials, materials, energy and communication services. Sector concentration can remain high even when country counts look broad.
- Security concentration: identify the largest ten holdings and any company whose weight is large enough to affect daily performance.
- Index methodology: read the index provider’s inclusion rules, review schedule, reconstitution process, foreign-ownership limits and treatment of new classifications.
- Total cost: compare the expense ratio with bid-ask spread, commissions, creation/redemption costs and tracking difference.
- Structure and domicile: verify whether the fund is U.S.-domiciled, UCITS or another structure and understand estate-tax, withholding-tax and reporting implications for your residence.
- Liquidity: review assets, average volume and normal spread. Use limit orders when the spread is material relative to your trade.
- Currency and distribution: distinguish the trading currency from the currency risk of the underlying companies, and check whether dividends are accumulating or distributing.
- Availability: confirm that your broker permits the ticker and that the share class is offered to your investor category.
Implementation: a practical decision process
Step 1: write the exclusion in one sentence
Examples include “I need diversified EM exposure and have no China restriction,” “China must be excluded,” or “China and Taiwan must both be excluded.” If you cannot state the rule precisely, selecting an ETF by its marketing label is premature.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 2: choose the narrowest index that satisfies it
- Use a broad EM index for a broad EM objective.
- Use an ex-China index when China is the specific restriction.
- Use ex-China ex-Taiwan only when both exclusions are intentional and you accept the resulting Korea and India weights.
- Use a global ex-Indonesia index only when developed-market exposure is part of the target.
Step 3: verify live holdings
Download the latest holdings file or factsheet from the issuer. Confirm Indonesia, China, Taiwan and South Korea weights, then check the largest companies and sectors. Do not carry a historical percentage into a new trade date.
Step 4: model the portfolio-level result
Add the candidate ETF to your existing positions rather than evaluating it in isolation. A portfolio that already owns a technology fund, Taiwan fund or Korean stocks can become concentrated even if the new ETF appears diversified on its own.
Step 5: place and monitor the trade
Check the live spread, use a limit order when appropriate, and record the index, expense ratio and country weights at purchase. Recheck after scheduled index reviews or when the fund changes its methodology. A replacement remains suitable only while it continues to meet your written rule.

Treating a country count as diversification
Hundreds of constituents do not prevent a few countries or sectors from dominating. The ex-China ex-Taiwan index had 515 constituents but still assigned 41.75% to South Korea and 20.78% to India.
Choosing on expense ratio alone
A lower annual fee can be offset by a wide spread, poor tracking or inconvenient trading access. Evaluate total implementation cost.
Using back-tested index history as live fund evidence
MSCI identifies pre-launch history for the ex-China ex-Taiwan index as back-tested. Separate that history from the performance and liquidity of any ETF launched later.

Monitoring checklist after purchase
- Review the issuer’s country table at least at each index rebalance.
- Confirm that Indonesia remains treated as intended by the index.
- Track China, Taiwan and South Korea weights for drift.
- Watch information-technology and financial-sector concentration.
- Compare the fund’s return with its index after fees and withholding taxes.
- Reassess the position if the fund changes domicile, index provider, replication method or distribution policy.
- Keep a written rebalancing rule rather than trading solely in response to a country’s recent performance.
Bottom line
EEM is the straightforward broad-emerging-markets replacement when you are simply reducing a standalone Indonesia position and accept China, Taiwan and South Korea. EMXC is the most direct choice when China is the exposure to remove, but its 60.64% combined Taiwan-and-South-Korea weight and 49.92% information-technology allocation require deliberate acceptance. An ex-China ex-Taiwan tracker is more precise for that double exclusion, yet it concentrates heavily in South Korea and India. A global ex-Indonesia index belongs in a global allocation, not as an automatic substitute for an EM fund. In every case, verify the latest holdings, fees, index rules, domicile and liquidity before trading.
