The Anbernic RG DS is the best dual-screen handheld if Nintendo DS is your main target. Its two 4-inch 640×480 panels can show each DS screen at an exact 2× scale, and Lost In Consoles lists it at a $94 reference price. If you also want Nintendo 3DS, move up to the AYN Thor; for a premium Android clamshell, choose the AYANEO Pocket DS; and for Windows games, guides and multitasking, choose the AYANEO FLIP 1S DS.

Quick picks

Handheld Reference price Best fit Key reason
Anbernic RG DS $94 DS-only buyers and tight budgets Two 4-inch 640×480 screens reproduce the 256×192 DS image at an exact 2× scale.
AYN Thor $249 DS plus 3DS Higher-resolution AMOLED panels and the stronger direction for a combined DS/3DS library.
AYANEO Pocket DS $399 Premium Android and cloud gaming 7-inch 1080p 165Hz OLED main screen, 5-inch 4:3 LCD secondary screen, Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, 8,000mAh battery.
ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 $599 Buyers considering a high-priced alternative A dual-screen model in the comparison; detailed display and platform specifications are not established in the cited material.
AYANEO Flip DS $739 Higher-priced clamshell alternative A dual-screen model in the comparison; detailed display and platform specifications are not established in the cited material.
AYANEO FLIP 1S DS Starts at $799 Windows emulation and PC multitasking A 7-inch 144Hz OLED top display, 4.5-inch 1620×1080 IPS lower display and native Windows extended-screen use.

The prices above are reference figures, not guarantees of current stock or a single worldwide configuration. Lost In Consoles supplied the RG DS, AYN Thor, Pocket DS, ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 and AYANEO Flip DS figures in 2026. PC Gamer reported the FLIP 1S DS entry price on July 15, 2025 for a 16GB/1TB Ryzen 7 8840U configuration. Regional taxes, shipping, storage choices and later price changes can alter what you actually pay.

Why two physical screens matter for Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS software was designed around two 256×192 screens, usually arranged vertically. A conventional single-screen emulator can display both images, but it has to shrink them, place them side by side, or make you switch between views. A clamshell or stacked dual-screen handheld preserves the basic relationship between the screens and leaves each panel available for touch input, maps, inventory, menus or the main game view.

Integer scaling avoids uneven pixels

The RG DS is notable because its 640×480 panels are exactly twice the DS resolution in both directions: 256×2 = 512 and 192×2 = 384. The image can therefore be enlarged with whole-pixel steps rather than fractional interpolation. The resulting 512×384 picture fits inside each panel with space left for borders or interface elements. That does not make every game sharper than the original artwork, but it avoids the uneven softness that can occur when a source image is scaled by a non-integer factor.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Aspect ratio and touch are practical decisions

A DS screen is 4:3. A secondary panel that is also 4:3 can use the available area efficiently, while a wider or unusually tall panel may require borders or a custom layout. Touch is equally important: games that expect a stylus or fingertip input are easier to use when the lower display is physically reachable instead of being a small window on a large landscape screen.

Two screens do not automatically mean 3DS support

DS and 3DS are separate targets. The comparison grades the RG DS an F for 3DS and recommends the AYN Thor or AYANEO Pocket DS when a buyer wants a DS-plus-3DS library. Choose hardware for the most demanding system you intend to play rather than assuming that a device with two panels will handle both generations equally well.

Anbernic RG DS: the best value for DS alone

What you get

Lost In Consoles ranks the Anbernic RG DS first among the six dual-screen devices in its database and gives it a $94 reference price. Its defining hardware is a pair of 4.0-inch 640×480 displays. Each panel can represent a 256×192 DS screen at an exact 2× scale, which is the cleanest match in this group for the original DS pixel grid.

Why it wins the DS-specific recommendation

  • Faithful geometry: Two panels keep the upper-and-lower DS arrangement instead of forcing a software substitute.
  • Integer scaling: 2× scaling is straightforward on a 640×480 panel, with no fractional enlargement required.
  • Low reference cost: At $94, it is far below the other listed dual-screen models.
  • Portability: The 4-inch panels are much smaller than the premium devices’ main displays, which helps keep the design focused on handheld DS play.

Where it falls short

The same comparison gives the RG DS an F for 3DS. It is therefore a poor choice if you expect one purchase to cover both Nintendo handheld generations. Its smaller screens also provide less room for large touch targets, guides or desktop-style multitasking than the premium Android and Windows alternatives. Those are trade-offs, not defects, when the goal is an inexpensive DS-focused machine.

Who should buy it

Pick the RG DS when DS is the primary or exclusive library, you value the original two-screen layout, and you want to spend as little as possible. It is the clear recommendation for a buyer asking, “What is the best dual-screen handheld for Nintendo DS games?” without adding 3DS, cloud gaming or PC-workstation requirements.

AYN Thor: the step up for DS and 3DS

Display and price position

Lost In Consoles lists AYN Thor at a $249 reference price, placing it between the RG DS and the more expensive AYANEO models. Its primary panel is a 1920×1080 AMOLED display and its secondary panel is a 1240×1080 AMOLED display. Those resolutions provide substantially more screen area than the RG DS panels for higher-resolution systems, interfaces and touch controls.

Why it is the better multi-generation choice

The comparison specifically points buyers toward Thor or Pocket DS for a DS-plus-3DS library. That recommendation makes Thor the logical upgrade when 3DS capability matters but the Pocket DS’s premium Android design and price are unnecessary. The two AMOLED panels also give you more flexibility for layouts, overlays and readable menus than a pair of small 640×480 screens.

Trade-offs versus RG DS

  • Cost: The $249 reference price is more than twice the RG DS figure.
  • Scaling: The panels are not a simple 2× match for the DS’s 256×192 source, so emulator settings may need a layout or scaling choice that is not as mathematically direct as the RG DS’s.
  • Portability: Larger, higher-resolution screens generally favor visibility and 3DS use over the smallest possible package.

Those compromises are worthwhile if your collection extends beyond DS. If you only want DS games and do not need the extra performance or display area, the RG DS remains the more economical answer.

AYANEO Pocket DS: premium Android with a large OLED main screen

Hardware specifications

AYANEO’s August 18, 2025 announcement describes the Pocket DS as a clamshell Android handheld built around a 7-inch 1080p 165Hz OLED main display and a 5-inch 4:3 LCD secondary display. The company specifies the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 platform, an 8,000mAh battery, and a configuration with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Lost In Consoles lists a $399 reference price.

AYANEO positions the device for dual-screen retro titles and cloud gaming. The 5-inch 4:3 lower panel is a more natural shape for a DS screen than a wide phone-style display, while the 7-inch OLED gives modern Android games, streaming interfaces and menus considerably more room.

When the Pocket DS makes sense

  • You want Android: Android offers a familiar mobile software environment and makes the device suitable for cloud services as well as local emulation.
  • You value a large main panel: A 7-inch OLED is easier to read for games that put most action on the upper screen.
  • You want one device for more than DS: The comparison names Pocket DS alongside Thor as a stronger option when 3DS capability matters.
  • You need endurance on paper: The stated 8,000mAh battery is substantially larger than what is typical of small retro handhelds, although real runtime depends on brightness, refresh rate, emulation load and networking.

What the premium price buys

At $399, Pocket DS costs over four times the RG DS reference price. You are paying for a larger OLED main display, a 4:3 secondary panel, newer mobile hardware, more memory and storage in the cited configuration, and an Android/cloud-gaming role. If those features will sit unused while you play only DS software, the extra expenditure is difficult to justify. If the handheld is also an Android gaming and streaming device, the larger displays give the premium price a clearer purpose.

AYANEO FLIP 1S DS: the Windows option for emulation and multitasking

Two screens that behave like a Windows PC setup

AYANEO describes the FLIP 1S DS’s 4.5-inch 1620×1080 IPS secondary display as a native Windows extended display. That means it is not limited to showing a second emulator viewport: it can hold guides, monitoring tools, controls, a video or another Windows application while the main game remains on the upper panel.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

AYANEO says users can play NDS or 3DS dual-screen games, read guides or watch videos while playing. PC Gamer reported on July 15, 2025 that the device combines a 7-inch 144Hz OLED top panel with a 4.5-inch 1080p IPS lower panel and starts at $799 for a 16GB/1TB configuration using a Ryzen 7 8840U.

Why choose Windows over Android

Windows is the deciding feature for buyers who want a handheld PC rather than a dedicated retro console. You can use desktop emulators, Windows utilities and ordinary PC applications on the extended lower display. That flexibility is useful for a 3DS or DS game with a reference guide open, for streamers monitoring software, or for anyone who wants the handheld to double as a compact computer.

Reasons not to buy it for basic DS play

  • Price: The $799 starting figure is the highest named entry price in this comparison.
  • Complexity: A Windows handheld involves desktop configuration and maintenance that a simpler retro-focused device may avoid.
  • Overkill: If your only requirement is two screens for DS, the RG DS delivers the more direct design at a fraction of the price.

Choose the FLIP 1S DS when the Windows extended-display function is itself a priority. It is the premium productivity-and-emulation choice, not the value pick.

ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1

Lost In Consoles lists the ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 at a $599 reference price and includes it among the six dual-screen devices in its database. Treat it as a higher-priced option to investigate only after confirming the exact configuration and software support for your games.

AYANEO Flip DS

The same comparison lists the AYANEO Flip DS at a $739 reference price. The cited material does not provide enough display, operating-system or performance detail to place it ahead of the better-documented RG DS, Thor, Pocket DS or FLIP 1S DS. A buyer considering it should verify the current model’s specifications and availability before choosing it over those clearer recommendations.

Choosing by your actual use case

Your priority Best match Why
Lowest cost with authentic DS geometry Anbernic RG DS The $94 reference price and exact 2× DS scaling directly address DS play.
DS and 3DS in one handheld AYN Thor The cited comparison recommends Thor for a DS-plus-3DS library and gives it larger AMOLED panels.
Premium Android, OLED and cloud gaming AYANEO Pocket DS Its 7-inch 165Hz OLED, 5-inch 4:3 LCD, Snapdragon platform and 8,000mAh battery support broader Android use.
Windows applications alongside games AYANEO FLIP 1S DS The lower screen is a native Windows extended display, not merely a fixed emulator panel.
Considering an expensive alternative with incomplete published details here ONEXSUGAR SUGAR 1 or AYANEO Flip DS Both appear in the comparison, but the supplied material does not establish enough specifications for a confident ranking.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide whether DS is the endpoint. If you will not play 3DS, start with the RG DS. If 3DS is part of the plan, evaluate Thor or Pocket DS instead.
  2. Check the operating system you actually want. Android favors mobile software and cloud gaming; Windows favors desktop emulators, guides and multitasking.
  3. Prioritize panel geometry. For DS, look for a 4:3 secondary screen and enough physical area for touch controls. The RG DS’s 640×480 panels are the only configuration here explicitly matched to exact 2× DS scaling.
  4. Set a hard price ceiling. Reference prices span $94 to $799. Do not pay for OLED, a large battery or Windows features that you will not use.
  5. Confirm the exact configuration before ordering. Storage, memory, regional pricing, taxes, shipping and availability can change the final cost. The $799 FLIP 1S DS figure specifically refers to a 16GB/1TB Ryzen 7 8840U configuration.
  6. Verify software support for your library. No single ranking proves how every emulator version, game or control scheme behaves. Check the current device documentation and community reports for the titles you care about.

Price, availability and evidence limits

The listed prices are useful for positioning, not a promise of today’s checkout price. Lost In Consoles’ figures are 2026 reference prices for five models, while the FLIP 1S DS starting price comes from PC Gamer’s July 15, 2025 report. Retail inventory, country-specific pricing and configuration changes were not verified for this comparison.

The recommendations also rely on the cited product descriptions and comparison rather than independent hands-on testing. That matters most for questions such as battery runtime, emulator frame-rate consistency, hinge durability, touch latency and the behavior of particular DS or 3DS games. Use the hardware distinctions above to narrow the field, then confirm those model-specific details for your region and software library.

Bottom line

Buy the Anbernic RG DS for the most faithful and affordable Nintendo DS experience: its twin 4-inch 640×480 panels provide an exact 2× representation of each 256×192 DS screen. Choose AYN Thor when 3DS is part of the plan, AYANEO Pocket DS when you want premium Android and cloud gaming, and AYANEO FLIP 1S DS when a Windows extended display for games, guides and multitasking justifies the $799 starting price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
