Best fit for looping a folder of videos to YouTube Live: simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder. Its README documents MP4 and MKV files mounted into the container and an option to loop them indefinitely. It is a repository project with build-from-source instructions, not a verified prebuilt registry image, so check its current files and test its output before relying on it. For a more customizable but less turnkey base, consider linuxserver/ffmpeg. If you would rather not maintain a Docker host, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative that plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a Docker image.
Which Docker image should you choose?
| Option | Best for | What is documented | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Keeping uploaded videos playing on YouTube without running a home computer | Cloud-based YouTube streaming, 24/7 looping and playlists; it is a service, not a Docker image. StreamNeo | You do not manage a Docker container or custom FFmpeg command. |
simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder |
Playing files from a mounted folder sequentially and looping them | The README documents MP4/MKV input, a /videos mount, a YouTube stream key, and LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true. Project repository |
Build-from-source instructions are documented. The available documentation does not establish a prebuilt registry image, current maintenance, exact encoding settings, or compatibility with every YouTube ingest protocol. |
linuxserver/ffmpeg |
Custom FFmpeg pipelines and command-level control | A general-purpose, ephemeral command-line image; x86-64 and arm64 support and hardware-acceleration options are documented. LinuxServer FFmpeg documentation | It is not a turnkey folder-looping YouTube app. You need to construct and maintain the FFmpeg command and understand Docker. |
The documentation establishes intended features, not a real-world reliability or performance ranking. Before choosing, check whether looping and playlist behavior suit your files, whether the project is maintained, how it handles the stream key, what architectures and acceleration options it supports, and whether its actual FFmpeg output matches your YouTube ingest settings.

Set up the folder-looping project
The project README describes building the image from source, mounting a video directory, and providing a YouTube stream key. Its documented loop control is LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true. Repository instructions can change, so inspect the current Dockerfile, entrypoint, and README before copying commands or exposing the container to a live channel.
- Prepare the host and files. Install Docker on a host that can remain available for the duration of the broadcast. Put the MP4 or MKV files you want to play in a dedicated directory. The project documentation describes mounting this directory at
/videos. - Review and build the image. Follow the repository’s current build instructions. The documented workflow builds from source; do not assume that a particular prebuilt image tag is available or current.
- Configure the mount and loop setting. Mount the host’s video directory at
/videosand setLOOP_INDEFINITELY=trueas described by the project. Confirm the entrypoint’s actual file ordering and behavior for your version rather than assuming it creates a playlist in a particular order. - Create a YouTube live stream and supply its key securely. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, configure the stream in Live Control Room, and copy the stream key for that stream. Pass it to the container using the mechanism the current project documentation supports. Do not commit it in a public Compose file, paste it into logs, or leave it in shell history; anyone who obtains the key may be able to broadcast to that stream.
- Match the ingest protocol and test. YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical encoder ingest. Check the stream’s selected server and protocol in Live Control Room, then verify that the project’s FFmpeg command targets the same protocol and endpoint. Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health before scheduling a public event.
- Monitor the host and stream. Watch FFmpeg/container output and YouTube stream health while testing. A container process that is running does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving valid video and audio.
Configure YouTube ingest, video, and audio
Prefer RTMPS for ordinary encoder ingest
YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube encoder settings guidance. Confirm the exact ingest address and protocol in Live Control Room; do not infer protocol support solely from a project’s description of “YouTube streaming.” The folder-looping project’s documented summary does not establish which protocol its current command uses.

HLS is a separate workflow
If you deliberately select YouTube’s HLS ingest, its requirements differ from the usual RTMP/RTMPS workflow. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. It calls for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range requests, and encryption only through HTTPS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube HLS ingest guidance. Use HLS only if your selected YouTube ingest route and FFmpeg output meet that guidance.
Match encoding to the source and host
The reviewed project information does not establish a specific resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, keyframe interval, or audio bitrate for its generated stream. Inspect the actual FFmpeg command and the settings shown for your stream in Live Control Room; avoid copying a generic bitrate or keyframe value into a command without checking the intended output and YouTube’s current settings guidance. If the workflow re-encodes, compute needs depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, and available hardware. LinuxServer documents hardware-acceleration options, but that is not a benchmark or a minimum host specification.

Use only videos and audio for which you have the necessary streaming rights, including permission for any music, footage, performances, or other included material. A Docker image or successful ingest does not grant those rights. YouTube may detect or restrict copyrighted material, and repeated or minimally changed uploads can raise separate monetization and channel-policy concerns. Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Stream key, selected ingest endpoint/protocol, and container output | Confirm the key belongs to the active stream in Live Control Room, verify the FFmpeg destination uses the selected protocol, and inspect logs for connection or authentication errors. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio. |
| Container starts but files do not play | Host-to-container mount and file formats | Check that files are visible inside /videos, that the mount points to the intended host directory, and that the files are readable and supported by the current command. |
| Playback stops after one pass | Loop environment setting and current entrypoint behavior | Verify LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true is actually passed to the container and supported by the version you built. Review the entrypoint to confirm how it handles end-of-list and errors. |
| Video or audio is rejected or unhealthy | Actual encoder output versus YouTube ingest settings | Inspect the FFmpeg command and stream health details. Confirm codec and, for HLS, the segment and playlist requirements; test with representative motion and audio before going live. |
| Host load is high or frames are dropped | Whether the workflow re-encodes, plus codec, resolution, frame rate, and acceleration | Check FFmpeg output and host utilization. Consider supported hardware acceleration or a suitable host, but determine capacity with your real workload; the cited image documentation gives no minimum specification or benchmark. |
| The stream disconnects and does not resume | Container restart behavior and YouTube reconnection | Check the container’s exit status and logs, then verify whether the current setup restarts the process and reconnects successfully. The reviewed project descriptions do not establish automatic recovery behavior, so test recovery rather than assuming it. |
