The recommended starting setup
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 offers two graphics presets rather than a long list of individually adjustable console options. Your practical decision is whether to prioritize responsiveness or image detail.

- TV or monitor: Select Performance for an up-to-40-FPS target at 1080p output. Select Quality for a 30-FPS target with higher internal resolution.
- Handheld: Select Performance for an up-to-40-FPS target at 720p output and keep handheld VRR available. Select Quality for a 30-FPS target at 1080p output if you prefer a cleaner image and can accept slower motion.
- Phantom Liberty: Keep Performance as the default if you value control during combat and traversal, but expect larger drops in Dogtown and other demanding scenes.
These are targets, not promises that every scene will run at exactly 40 or 30 FPS. The game’s workload changes sharply between an enclosed room, a crowded street, a vehicle chase and a large firefight.

The target and output figures come from CD PROJEKT RED’s technical support information, current on October 19, 2026. The dynamic-resolution ranges were reported by Nintendo Life from Digital Foundry testing in 2025. Dynamic resolution means the internal render size can move within the stated range to manage the workload; it is not a fixed resolution guarantee.

Why Performance is the better default
At up to 40 FPS, Performance gives the game more frequent input and image updates than a 30-FPS preset. That difference is most noticeable when you turn quickly, track a moving target, steer through traffic or adjust your aim with a thumbstick. It does not make the game immune to drops, but it gives the console more headroom in ordinary scenes.
Digital Foundry testing reported by Nintendo Life found Performance commonly around 40 FPS indoors. Outdoor areas and busy firefights can fall to 30 FPS or slightly below. Those changes are why the preset should be understood as a higher frame-rate target rather than a locked mode.
Performance also lowers the internal resolution more aggressively when necessary. In handheld testing, the reported range extends from 640×360 to 1280×720; docked testing found 960×540 to 1920×1080. At the low end, fine signs, distant geometry and thin lines can look softer. The trade-off is that the game spends more of its rendering budget on motion responsiveness.
When Quality mode makes more sense
Quality targets 30 FPS and allows a higher internal resolution. Nintendo Life’s report of Digital Foundry testing measured a handheld range of 800×450 to 1440×810 and a docked range of 1280×720 to 1920×1080. The higher floor can preserve more detail in static views, although the handheld panel still receives the game’s 1080p output target rather than a guarantee that every frame is internally rendered at that size.

In the main story, Quality generally holds its 30-FPS target according to the same 2025 report. A consistent 30 FPS can look preferable to a mode that moves between roughly 40 and 30 FPS if you are sensitive to uneven pacing or usually play from a seated position where image clarity matters most.
Choose Quality if you value
- Sharper text, signage and distant objects when the scene allows the higher internal resolution.
- A conventional 30-FPS presentation for slower exploration and dialogue-heavy play.
- TV play where you sit close enough to notice softness and do not want the higher Performance target.
Do not choose Quality expecting a universal 30-FPS lock
Phantom Liberty can push Quality below its target in complex environments. Nintendo Life’s report describes drops to approximately 20–25 FPS in demanding expansion scenes. If the expansion is your main reason for playing, test Performance first rather than assuming the visual preset will remain steadier.
How to set the mode on Switch 2
- Launch Cyberpunk 2077 and open the game’s settings menu.
- Enter the graphics or display options where the Performance and Quality presets are listed.
- Select Performance for the higher frame-rate target, or Quality for the 30-FPS visual-priority target.
- Apply the change, then load a save in the type of area where you normally play. A quiet interior is not a useful test for expansion combat or dense city streets.
- Keep the preset that gives you the more comfortable combination of motion, image sharpness and controller response. Revisit it after beginning Phantom Liberty because its heavier scenes can change the balance.
The game does not provide evidence that a particular preset saves a measurable amount of battery. Treat the choice as a performance-and-image decision, not as a guaranteed power-saving switch.

Handheld VRR: what it helps with
CD PROJEKT RED says the game uses Variable Refresh Rate in handheld mode to create a smoother experience. VRR lets the display refresh in step with changing frame delivery instead of presenting every refresh at a rigid interval. When Performance moves from its usual indoor result toward 30 FPS or slightly below outdoors, VRR can make that variation feel less abrupt.

VRR cannot create missing frames, raise a scene to 40 FPS or prevent a heavy area from becoming GPU-limited. It is most useful when the frame rate is fluctuating near the display’s supported range. Leave the handheld VRR option available if you prefer Performance and find uneven motion distracting.
Practical VRR checks
- Use handheld mode rather than assuming a docked display will provide the same behavior; the official statement specifically describes VRR for handheld play.
- Compare a repeatable route, such as turning the camera through a busy street, with VRR available and unavailable if your system settings let you change it.
- Judge comfort during movement, not only a still screenshot. VRR’s benefit is in the transition between frame deliveries.
Phantom Liberty requires a different expectation
The Dogtown area and the expansion’s combat encounters are more demanding than many main-story situations. The reported Quality behavior is approximately 20–25 FPS in complex Phantom Liberty environments, while Performance is commonly around 40 FPS indoors but can reach 30 FPS or slightly below outdoors and in busy firefights.
Recommended expansion settings
- Performance for combat: The higher target leaves more room for responsive camera and aim movement, even though heavy scenes still dip.
- Quality for calm exploration: Use it if the expansion’s image detail is more important to you than maintaining the higher target, and accept that complex scenes may run below 30 FPS.
- Do not switch during a difficult encounter: Change presets from a safe location, then judge the result in a representative combat or driving sequence.
A drop in Dogtown is not evidence that the console or game is malfunctioning. It reflects the expansion’s more complex environments and effects load. If responsiveness is your priority, Performance remains the sensible baseline; if neither preset feels smooth enough in a particular scene, no setting in the supplied options can guarantee a fixed frame rate there.

Battery life: the honest estimate and the useful adjustments
CD PROJEKT RED states that the game can run on battery for “approximately up to 2 hours.” The publisher specifically notes that runtime varies with factors such as screen brightness. This is an approximate upper estimate, not a promise for every session, and it is not a mode-by-mode laboratory result.

Lower the handheld screen brightness when the room allows it. Because the publisher does not publish separate battery measurements for Performance and Quality, do not claim that switching presets saves a specific number of minutes. A mode may change rendering work, but the available evidence does not quantify that effect.
Battery habits that do not require unsupported promises
- Begin a long session with the console fully charged rather than treating the two-hour figure as a guaranteed reserve.
- Reduce brightness to the lowest level that keeps dark interiors and menus comfortable to read.
- Carry a suitable charger or power bank for travel if you need more than an approximately two-hour session away from an outlet.
- Use Performance for control and Quality for image detail; choose between them on play feel, not on an assumed battery advantage.
Understanding the resolution numbers
The ranges in the table are internal dynamic-resolution measurements reported from Digital Foundry testing, not declarations that the game permanently renders at one fixed size. Performance can move down to 640×360 in handheld or 960×540 when docked before scaling to the display output. Quality’s reported lower bounds are higher: 800×450 handheld and 1280×720 docked.
The upper ends also explain why docked play can look cleaner in favorable scenes. Performance can reach 1920×1080 when docked, while handheld Performance tops out at 1280×720 in the reported range. Quality can reach 1920×1080 in both test categories, although the internal value changes with the scene.
These numbers describe image detail, not frame rate. A scene can render at a relatively high internal resolution and still miss its frame target if its geometry, effects or CPU workload is heavy. Conversely, a lower internal resolution can help the game deliver a more responsive frame.

Choosing a preset by the way you play

Use the same save and route when comparing. Looking only at a pause screen favors Quality; driving through traffic or tracking an enemy favors Performance. A short, repeatable test gives you a more useful answer than a single screenshot.
Common problems and what the settings can—and cannot—fix
“Performance does not stay at 40 FPS.”
That behavior is within the reported range. Outdoor areas and busy firefights can reach 30 FPS or slightly below. Keep Performance if its lower-resolution trade-off still feels more responsive, or move to Quality if you prefer a steadier 30-FPS target in the main story.
“Quality looks soft in handheld mode.”
Quality has a higher reported dynamic-resolution range than Performance, but it still changes resolution by scene and is scaled to the handheld display. Inspecting a distant sign during a demanding scene can reveal softness even in the visual-priority preset.
“VRR made a dip less obvious but did not remove it.”
That is the expected role of VRR. It can smooth the perception of uneven delivery in handheld mode; it does not add frames or prevent the workload from exceeding the preset’s target.
“The battery lasts less than two hours.”
The publisher’s wording is approximately up to two hours, with brightness and other conditions affecting the result. Treat it as an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime. Lower brightness when practical and plan access to power for longer trips.
Which edition is being discussed?
The Switch 2 release is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. The physical version uses a 64 GB game card and includes both the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion. That matters when planning storage, travel and performance expectations: the expansion is part of the package and is also the content most likely to expose the larger frame-rate dips described above.
Bottom line
Set Performance first, especially for handheld play and Phantom Liberty combat, and leave handheld VRR available. Choose Quality when higher image detail and a 30-FPS target are more important than the faster response. Keep the official approximately-up-to-two-hour battery estimate in mind, reduce brightness when practical, and do not treat either frame-rate target or battery figure as a guarantee for every scene or session.
