1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor the sharpest, most cinematic Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots, prioritize the quality of the frame being captured rather than real-time frame rate: use the highest output resolution your GPU can finish reliably, enable Ray Tracing: Overdrive (path tracing) when hardware allows, turn on DLSS Ray Reconstruction on supported GeForce RTX cards, and capture through Photo Mode. At 4K, CD PROJEKT RED’s named Overdrive target is 60 FPS with a GeForce RTX 4080, 16 GB of VRAM and 24 GB of system memory, measured with DLSS Frame Generation enabled. A single Photo Mode frame has lower minimum VRAM requirements than continuous play, but rendering can take from a few seconds to several minutes as resolution rises or GPU power falls.
Start with the right target: a still image, not a game-play benchmark
A screenshot workflow has a different priority from ordinary play. In a game session you need consistent input latency and a sustained frame rate. For a still, the saved image is the product. It is therefore sensible to accept a slower preview, enable the most advanced lighting mode, and wait for one frame to finish if the result has cleaner reflections, shadows and indirect light.

The recommendations below separate published hardware requirements from editorial choices. CD PROJEKT RED publishes resolution, VRAM and performance targets; it does not publish a universal “best” DLSS mode for every scene, GPU and driver. Start with the highest-quality reconstruction your card can sustain, then inspect the saved file at 100 percent and adjust for shimmer, lost fine detail or denoising artifacts.
Choose a resolution and lighting profile
| Profile | Output resolution | Lighting mode | Hardware anchor | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum cinematic | 3840×2160 (2160p/4K) | Ray Tracing: Overdrive / Path Tracing | Official 2160p/60 target: GeForce RTX 4080, 16 GB VRAM, 24 GB system RAM; DLSS Frame Generation enabled for the measurement | Final hero images and scenes dominated by reflections or complex lighting |
| Balanced cinematic | 2560×1440 | Path Tracing if the Photo Mode threshold is met; otherwise Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster | At least 10 GB VRAM for a path-traced Photo Mode capture at 1440p | High-detail stills when 4K capture is too slow |
| Lower-VRAM cinematic | 1920×1080 | Path Tracing if supported; otherwise Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster | At least 8 GB VRAM for a path-traced Photo Mode capture at 1080p | Cards that cannot render a practical 1440p or 4K path-traced frame |
| Non-ray-traced Ultra | 3840×2160 (2160p/4K) | Ultra raster | Published 2160p/60 target: GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX, 12 GB VRAM | Clean high-resolution images when path tracing is unavailable |
These are named targets, not guarantees for every area, driver or game build. The Overdrive requirement is specifically measured with DLSS Frame Generation switched on. A card that reaches the target in one location may render more slowly in a dense market, during a weather effect or with many emissive signs in view.

Why Overdrive produces a more cinematic frame
Overdrive is Cyberpunk 2077’s path-tracing mode. NVIDIA describes full ray tracing as a unified method that models direct and global illumination, reflections and shadows from many light sources instead of combining separate screen-space and older global-illumination techniques. Reflections are rendered at full resolution. That combination is especially visible in Night City’s wet streets, glass, polished vehicles, neon signs and interiors with several colored light sources.
CD PROJEKT RED labels Overdrive very GPU intensive and leaves it off by default. The cost is not only a lower interactive frame rate: path-traced Photo Mode captures can take from a few seconds to several minutes. The support guidance ties the delay to both output resolution and GPU power, so a 2160p frame on a slower card can require substantially more patience than a 1080p frame on a faster one.
Raster Ultra and Ray Tracing Ultra remain useful fallbacks. Raster rendering can produce a crisp image at a much higher practical frame rate, while Ray Tracing Ultra adds selected ray-traced effects without the full path-traced workload. If your scene has little reflective material or the final image will be displayed small, the extra wait for Overdrive may not improve the result enough to justify it.
Set up the game before composing
- Update to a current game build. Patch 2.21 fixed Photo Mode issues involving camera movement, presets, spawned characters, aspect-ratio grid behavior and chromatic-aberration control. Interface labels can differ on older builds.
- Load the location you want to photograph and wait for texture and object streaming to settle. Moving the camera immediately after loading can leave a shot with temporary low-detail assets or missing background elements.
- Open the graphics settings and select your output resolution. Use native 2160p when your GPU can complete the frame reliably; otherwise choose 1440p or 1080p according to the VRAM thresholds and the time you can accept for each capture.
- Choose Ray Tracing: Overdrive for the maximum-lighting profile. If the option is impractical, select Ray Tracing Ultra, then Ultra raster if necessary.
- On supported GeForce RTX hardware, enable DLSS Ray Reconstruction when Path Tracing is active. The game’s current DLSS section exposes the model available to your build; Patch 2.21 documents CNN and Transformer choices.
- Choose the highest-quality DLSS Super Resolution mode that remains stable in your scene. Begin with Quality when you have headroom. Move to Balanced only when the frame cannot be completed in a reasonable time, and inspect fine geometry for breakup after saving.
- Use Frame Generation for interactive navigation if it makes camera movement easier. It can help the preview feel responsive, but the saved still is judged by the rendered image rather than the generated preview cadence.
DLSS Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution
Ray Reconstruction
DLSS Ray Reconstruction is designed to improve clarity in ray-traced effects by replacing conventional denoising with a learned reconstruction step. The 2.0 implementation places it in the NVIDIA DLSS section and requires Path Tracing. NVIDIA describes clearer reflections and more accurate global illumination with DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction. If you are using Ray Tracing Ultra or raster rendering, the option may be unavailable or may not provide the same benefit.
Super Resolution mode
There is no published universal optimum among Performance, Balanced and Quality for every Cyberpunk 2077 scene. Higher-quality modes preserve more source detail but require more GPU work; lower-resolution internal rendering can make a path-traced still finish sooner while increasing the risk of thin-line shimmer, foliage instability and texture softness. Use Quality first when your card has room. If the capture stalls or takes several minutes, test Balanced, save both versions and compare them at 100 percent rather than judging only the in-game preview.

When to disable reconstruction
If a particular frame shows ringing around bright signs, crawling patterns on cables or unstable reflection detail, make one controlled test with a different DLSS mode. Keep the lighting mode and camera unchanged so the comparison isolates reconstruction. Do not assume that disabling DLSS automatically improves every image: native rendering can still be limited by path-tracing noise, focus errors or clipped highlights.
Official Photo Mode VRAM thresholds
CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance gives minimum VRAM for a path-traced Photo Mode capture on other ray-tracing-capable GPUs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Photo Mode output | Minimum VRAM | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 8 GB | Lowest published threshold; capture time still depends on GPU power and scene complexity |
| 2560×1440 | 10 GB | More memory headroom is required as resolution and render targets grow |
| 3840×2160 | 12 GB | Highest published threshold; expect the longest waits on slower cards |
Meeting a threshold does not promise a fixed capture time or a particular frame rate. It means the support article identifies enough VRAM for that output class under its stated conditions. System memory, driver behavior, background applications and the selected effects can still affect whether a frame completes cleanly.
Photo Mode: exact capture workflow on PC
- Position your character and allow the scene to finish streaming.
- Press N on the PC keyboard to open Photo Mode.
- Use the camera controls to set position, rotation and field of view. A wider field of view shows more architecture but can make foreground edges stretch; a narrower field of view compresses distance and often suits portraits.
- Set depth of field deliberately. Place the focus plane on the eyes for a character portrait, on the nearest important object for a prop shot, or at the architectural feature that should carry the composition.
- Adjust Photo Mode visual effects as creative controls. Exposure, contrast, vignette, chromatic aberration and film grain change the look; none is a substitute for resolving a rendering problem.
- Enable the Photo Mode path-tracing option when your GPU and output resolution meet the published VRAM threshold. Give the game time to finish the single-frame render.
- Save the image. On PC, captures are stored in
%UserProfile%PicturesCyberpunk 2077. - Open the saved file in an image viewer at 100 percent. Check hair, cables, foliage, neon edges, mirrors and distant signs for shimmer or denoising artifacts, then inspect highlights for clipping and the subject’s eyes for focus errors.
Composing a sharp, cinematic shot
Use light direction before adding effects
Path tracing can reveal lighting relationships, but it cannot rescue a flat composition. Turn the camera toward a clear key light, let a rim light separate the subject from a dark background, and use reflective surfaces to carry color through the frame. Wet pavement and glass are valuable because Overdrive renders their reflections at full resolution.
Control field of view and perspective
For portraits, a moderate field of view avoids exaggerated facial and limb proportions. For environmental images, widen it only enough to include the leading lines you need. If straight architecture bends at the edges, move the camera back and use a narrower field of view rather than relying on a heavy crop.

Reserve depth of field for a clear subject
Excessive blur can hide the very detail that makes a high-resolution capture worthwhile. Keep enough background structure to establish Night City, then place the focus plane precisely. Recheck focus after changing the camera distance because a small move can shift the sharp zone.

Chromatic aberration, film grain and vignette are style choices. They can support a filmic look, but they also reduce edge clarity and make compression artifacts harder to spot. For a clean master image, begin with them off, save a neutral frame, and add only the effects that serve the composition.
Interactive navigation versus final rendering
| Task | Recommended priority | Suggested settings |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a camera angle | Responsive controls | Use Frame Generation if helpful; temporarily lower DLSS quality or disable Overdrive while scouting |
| Testing reflections and lighting | Visual accuracy | Enable Overdrive and Ray Reconstruction; wait for the preview to settle |
| Saving the final still | Rendered-frame quality | Use the highest stable resolution and reconstruction quality; enable Photo Mode path tracing when eligible |
Switching settings during scouting is practical because the final capture is independent of the frame rate you used to find the shot. Before saving, restore the intended resolution, lighting mode and reconstruction settings, then wait for streaming and the path-traced render to finish.

The screenshot takes several minutes
- Lower output resolution from 2160p to 1440p or 1080p while keeping the same camera.
- Use Balanced instead of Quality Super Resolution if the saved image remains acceptably detailed.
- Close GPU-intensive background applications and confirm that the game is using the intended graphics adapter.
- If the scene does not benefit visibly from path tracing, switch to Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster.
The image looks soft
- Return to the highest-quality DLSS mode your GPU can sustain.
- Check that the game output resolution did not fall to a lower preset.
- Reduce depth-of-field blur and disable film grain or chromatic aberration for a neutral comparison.
- Inspect the saved file, not only the Photo Mode preview, because the preview can be affected by movement and unfinished rendering.
Reflections shimmer or contain unstable detail
- Enable DLSS Ray Reconstruction with Path Tracing on supported GeForce RTX hardware.
- Allow the scene to settle before opening Photo Mode and avoid judging a frame while the camera is still moving.
- Compare Quality and Balanced Super Resolution at identical camera settings.
- If the artifact remains, test Ray Tracing Ultra or raster rendering; a simpler lighting mode can be cleaner for a particular material or distance.
Highlights are clipped
Lower exposure in Photo Mode and recheck bright signs, headlights and emissive panels at 100 percent. Path tracing improves light transport, but it does not prevent an intentionally overexposed composition from losing highlight detail.
The Photo Mode interface behaves unexpectedly
Install the current game build. Patch 2.21 addressed camera movement, presets, spawned characters, aspect-ratio grid behavior and chromatic-aberration control, so an older build may show bugs that no longer apply to the documented interface.

What the official performance figures do and do not mean
The published 2160p/60 Overdrive target names a GeForce RTX 4080 with 16 GB VRAM and 24 GB system RAM, and records DLSS Frame Generation enabled. NVIDIA separately reported a 4.9× average performance increase versus native 4K for a DLSS 3.5 configuration using Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, Reflex and Super Resolution in its 2023 material. That figure is a vendor-reported average for the stated configuration, not a guarantee for your card, driver, scene or screenshot time.
Similarly, the 8 GB, 10 GB and 12 GB Photo Mode thresholds are capacity guidelines, not image-quality rankings. A card with more VRAM can still be slower than another card with less memory, and a faster card can still produce a noisy or poorly focused image if the camera and reconstruction settings are unsuitable.
A practical decision tree
- Do you have a ray-tracing-capable GPU with at least 12 GB VRAM and enough time for a 4K render? Use 2160p Overdrive, Ray Reconstruction and the highest stable Super Resolution quality.
- Do you have at least 10 GB VRAM but 4K is too slow? Use 1440p Path Tracing with Ray Reconstruction, then compare Quality and Balanced upscaling.
- Do you have at least 8 GB VRAM but limited performance? Use 1080p Path Tracing for selected hero frames, or Ray Tracing Ultra for faster iteration.
- Does your GPU fall below the applicable path-traced Photo Mode threshold? Use Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster, keep texture quality high, and choose the cleanest anti-aliasing or upscaling mode your hardware can sustain.
- Is the final image for a small web placement? Prefer a clean, stable 1440p or 1080p capture over a noisy 4K frame that will be reduced dramatically.
Final checklist before publishing a screenshot
- Resolution is the intended 1080p, 1440p or 2160p output.
- Lighting mode matches the goal: Overdrive for maximum path-traced realism, Ray Tracing Ultra or raster Ultra for speed.
- Ray Reconstruction is enabled when Path Tracing and supported GeForce RTX hardware make it available.
- Streaming has settled and no temporary low-detail assets remain.
- Subject focus, field of view and depth of field support the composition.
- Saved file has been inspected at 100 percent for shimmer, denoising, clipped highlights and focus errors.
- The file is retrieved from
%UserProfile%PicturesCyberpunk 2077and retained at the original capture resolution.
Bottom line
For a single, publication-quality Cyberpunk 2077 screenshot, start at the highest resolution your GPU can finish, choose Overdrive path tracing, enable Ray Reconstruction on supported GeForce RTX hardware, and capture with Photo Mode after the scene has settled. Use the official 8 GB, 10 GB and 12 GB VRAM thresholds as the minimum path-traced Photo Mode guide for 1080p, 1440p and 2160p respectively. If the wait or artifacts outweigh the lighting benefit, step down to Ray Tracing Ultra or Ultra raster while preserving resolution and careful composition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Path Tracing in Photo Mode with 8 GB of VRAM?
CD PROJEKT RED lists 8 GB VRAM as the minimum for a path-traced Photo Mode capture at 1080p. The 1440p and 2160p minimums are 10 GB and 12 GB, and actual capture time varies with GPU power and scene complexity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should Frame Generation be enabled for the final screenshot?
Frame Generation can make interactive camera movement feel smoother, and the official 2160p/60 Overdrive target was measured with it enabled. The saved still is judged by the rendered frame, so use it primarily for navigation and verify the final image at 100 percent.
Where are Cyberpunk 2077 PC Photo Mode screenshots saved?
They are saved in %UserProfile%PicturesCyberpunk 2077.
Why does my path-traced screenshot take so long?
CD PROJEKT RED states that higher resolution and a less powerful GPU increase capture time, which can range from a few seconds to several minutes. Lowering resolution or using Ray Tracing Ultra can shorten the wait.
