The best controller for Steam Machine
The Valve Steam Controller (2026) is the best starting point for a Steam-only living-room setup. Its hardware is built around Steam Input rather than a conventional console layout, so every button, pad and motion control can be remapped. You can use official or community layouts for a game instead of accepting the developer’s default controls.
The controller includes two TMR thumbsticks, capacitive touch surfaces, two trackpads, four assignable grip buttons, gyro-capable motion input and high-definition rumble. The trackpads can behave like a mouse, directional pad or scroll wheel, which is particularly useful for strategy games, older PC titles and interfaces that were designed for a desk.

Steam Controller features that matter
| Feature | What it does on Steam Machine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Input remapping | Lets you assign buttons, sticks, pads, triggers, grip buttons and motion controls to a game profile. | One controller can be adapted to radically different PC control schemes. |
| Two trackpads | Can emulate a mouse, d-pad, scroll wheel or other input surface. | Useful for menus, cursor-heavy games and titles without native gamepad support. |
| TMR thumbsticks | Use a contactless sensing design rather than a conventional potentiometer. | They are part of the controller’s updated hardware; long-term durability still depends on use. |
| Four assignable grip buttons | Provide extra inputs without removing your thumbs from the sticks or pads. | Useful for shortcuts, paddle-style controls and complex PC games. |
| Gyro-capable motion input | Allows aiming or other actions by moving the controller. | Can supplement a stick for fine aiming when a game profile supports it. |
| High-definition rumble | Provides detailed haptic feedback in supported profiles and games. | Adds tactile feedback beyond a simple on/off vibration motor. |
| Connection choices | Steam Controller Puck, Bluetooth or USB. | You can prioritize low-friction wireless use, device compatibility or a wired fallback. |
What the puck adds
The Steam Controller Puck acts as a wireless transmitter and magnetic charging station. It is the most convenient choice when the Steam Machine is permanently installed under a television: leave the puck connected, place the controller on it when you finish playing and avoid reaching behind the PC for a cable.
Tom’s Guide reports that one puck can pair up to four Steam Controllers for local multiplayer. That makes the puck more than a charger if your household expects couch co-op. Pair controllers one at a time, confirm each is assigned to a player, and test every seat before starting a multiplayer session.
The controller does not require the puck. Valve states that it pairs easily to Steam Machine without it, and Bluetooth or USB can be used instead. Bluetooth is useful when you are carrying the controller between rooms or do not want another transmitter attached. USB is the dependable troubleshooting option and can keep playing while the controller charges.

Where the Steam Controller is less suitable
Trackpads are powerful but not instantly familiar. Someone who expects a traditional console pad may need time to learn the sensitivity, click zones and grip buttons. If your household mostly plays games with standard twin-stick controls, a familiar layout may feel better immediately.
There is also an ecosystem limitation. Tom’s Guide reports that the controller works seamlessly with SteamOS but is not an easy plug-and-play choice for the Epic Games Store, the Xbox PC app or consoles. Steam Input can make many non-Steam situations workable, but treat those as configuration projects rather than guaranteed compatibility.

Should you use an Xbox-, PlayStation- or Switch-style controller?
A conventional pad is a reasonable alternative when familiarity, couch co-op or use across several devices matters more than Steam Input’s extra controls. The available information does not establish an official, model-by-model certification list for third-party controllers, so these should be treated as compatibility options to test—not guaranteed recommendations.
| Controller style | Best for | Trade-offs on Steam Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox-style layout | Players who want the familiar offset-stick arrangement and broad PC-game conventions. | Usually easier to understand immediately, but it may provide fewer dedicated inputs than the Steam Controller. Verify wireless pairing, button labeling and Steam Input behavior for the exact model. |
| PlayStation-style layout | Players already comfortable with symmetrical sticks and that button arrangement. | Can be a good couch option, but PC support and feature behavior vary by model and connection method. Test Bluetooth and USB separately if both are important. |
| Switch-style layout | Families that already use compact pads or need several controllers for local multiplayer. | Compact designs differ substantially in sticks, triggers and wireless behavior. Confirm that SteamOS detects the exact controller and that the game receives the expected inputs. |
| Valve Steam Controller | Steam-only libraries, mouse-heavy games, remapping and motion aiming. | Requires learning the trackpads; non-Steam and console use is less plug-and-play. |
For any alternative pad, check four things before buying multiples: whether SteamOS sees it over Bluetooth, whether USB works without a special driver, whether Steam Input exposes every button, and whether the controller can reconnect after the Steam Machine wakes. A wired test with one unit is safer than purchasing a complete local-multiplayer set first.
How to choose between the Steam Controller and a conventional pad
- Choose the Steam Controller if you play strategy, simulation, role-playing, older PC releases, desktop-style interfaces or games that benefit from gyro aiming and extra rear buttons.
- Choose a conventional pad if everyone already knows that layout, your library is mostly standard gamepad titles, or the same controllers must also serve other devices.
- Use both if the primary player wants Steam Input features while guests prefer familiar controls. Test each device in the same Steam Input configuration before local multiplayer begins.
- Plan for charging before choosing wireless. The puck is the neatest permanent setup; Bluetooth avoids a dedicated transmitter; USB remains the simplest fallback.
Accessories that solve real Steam Machine problems
Certified HDMI 2.0 cable
Steam Machine includes an HDMI 2.0 cable and has an HDMI 2.0 output, so a replacement is not mandatory. A longer certified HDMI 2.0 cable is justified when the supplied lead cannot reach the television, when you need a spare, or when the existing cable is damaged.
Match the cable length to the room and the display mode you actually intend to use. The cable cannot add rendering performance; it only carries the signal. If a television has several HDMI inputs with different capabilities, use the input whose specification supports the mode you plan to select and enable any required gaming or low-latency setting on the display.
Powered USB hub
PC Gamer lists two front USB-A 3.2 ports, two rear USB-A 2.0 ports and one rear USB-C port. That is enough for a basic setup, but several wired controllers, a keyboard, a mouse and external storage can consume the convenient ports quickly.

A powered hub is the right accessory when multiple peripherals must remain connected. External power matters because a hub that draws everything from one USB port can become unreliable when several devices are attached. Keep high-bandwidth storage and latency-sensitive accessories on the Steam Machine’s own ports when practical, and use the hub for the remaining controllers and low-demand peripherals.

Cat6 Ethernet cable
The machine has a 1 Gbps Ethernet port as well as Wi-Fi 6E. If the router is nearby, wired Ethernet is the sensible choice for consistent downloads, remote play and online multiplayer. It does not increase the Steam Machine’s rendering performance; it improves the network path between the machine and your router.
Choose a cable long enough to avoid sharp bends or tension. If routing a cable is impractical, Wi-Fi 6E may be entirely adequate, but interference, distance and wall construction can make wireless performance less predictable.
microSDXC card
PC Gamer reports a front microSD card slot and internal storage choices of 512 GB or 2 TB. A microSDXC card can provide removable game storage, simplify moving a library between compatible systems and preserve the internal drive for frequently played titles.
SteamOS support and usable capacity should be verified before naming or buying a specific card. Capacity printed on the package is not the same as free space after formatting, and game load behavior can differ between internal and removable storage. Treat the card as an expansion layer, not a substitute for a backup of saves or irreplaceable files.

4K gaming television or monitor
Steam Machine is designed for living-room play and provides HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. A display upgrade is worthwhile only when its real specifications match the games and settings you intend to use.
- Refresh rate: choose a panel that can display the frame rates you realistically target rather than paying for a number the machine cannot sustain.
- Input latency: use a display’s game mode or low-latency mode when available.
- Adaptive sync: check whether the display and connection support the variable-refresh behavior you want.
- Input limits: verify the actual HDMI input specification; a television may have different capabilities on different ports.
- Physical placement: ensure the display has room for the Steam Machine, puck and any USB hub without blocking ventilation or access to the front card slot.
Steam Machine hardware that should influence your accessory plan
PC Gamer lists a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C/12T processor, RDNA 3 graphics, 16 GB of DDR5 system memory and 8 GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Storage is offered in 512 GB or 2 TB configurations. Networking includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and a 1 Gbps Ethernet port. Video outputs are HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, and the enclosure includes USB-A and USB-C connectivity.
Those specifications explain the accessory priorities. The machine already has modern wireless networking and Bluetooth, so Ethernet is a consistency upgrade rather than a requirement. The built-in card reader and multiple USB ports make expansion possible, while the two internal-storage choices determine how urgently you need removable storage. The included HDMI cable means display compatibility—not cable ownership—is usually the first question.

Setup: controller, network, storage and display
1. Connect the display and network first
- Connect the Steam Machine to the television or monitor with the supplied HDMI 2.0 cable, or use a suitable DisplayPort 1.4 connection.
- Turn on the display and select the input used by the Steam Machine. If the screen is blank, try the display’s other compatible input before changing software settings.
- Connect Ethernet if the router is close enough for a clean cable run. Otherwise, complete Wi-Fi setup and keep the router’s location in mind if downloads or remote play become unstable.
2. Pair the Steam Controller
- For the most integrated setup, connect the Steam Controller Puck to the Steam Machine and place or pair the controller as directed by the on-screen SteamOS prompt.
- If you are not using the puck, select Bluetooth pairing in SteamOS and put the controller into pairing mode. Keep the controller close to the machine during the first connection.
- If wireless pairing fails, connect the controller by USB. A wired connection confirms that SteamOS can see the device and gives you a recovery path for later Bluetooth troubleshooting.
3. Configure Steam Input
- Open the Steam controller settings and select the connected controller. SteamOS labels can change between releases, but the relevant area is the Controller section of Settings.
- Choose a game and inspect its controller layout. Start with the game’s official layout, then try a community layout when a title needs mouse emulation, gyro aiming or extra bindings.
- Test every button, both trackpads, the grip buttons and gyro behavior from the couch before launching a long session. Save a personal layout after making changes so an update or community layout change does not erase your preferred mapping.
4. Add local multiplayer controllers
- Pair additional Steam Controllers to the same puck one at a time. Tom’s Guide reports a maximum of four Steam Controllers per puck.
- Connect conventional pads individually by Bluetooth or USB and confirm that SteamOS assigns each to a separate player.
- Launch a game with a known local multiplayer mode and verify that every player can join before downloading or configuring anything else.
5. Add storage and peripherals
- Insert a compatible microSDXC card into the front slot only after confirming its capacity and SteamOS support.
- Connect a powered USB hub when the available front and rear ports cannot accommodate all controllers and peripherals.
- Keep the puck, hub and storage where cables cannot be pulled by people moving around the television stand.
Troubleshooting common problems
The controller will not pair
- Connect it by USB first to rule out a depleted battery or a wireless-mode problem.
- Move the controller close to the Steam Machine or puck during pairing and remove nearby Bluetooth devices that are competing for attention.
- Power-cycle the controller and Steam Machine, then repeat pairing rather than repeatedly selecting a stale device entry.
- If several controllers are attached, disconnect the extras and pair one device at a time.
The trackpad behaves like a mouse when you want a d-pad
Open the game’s Steam Input layout and change the trackpad behavior from mouse to directional pad, or select a community layout that already does so. Save the result as your personal layout. This is a configuration issue, not evidence that the hardware is defective.
A non-Steam game does not respond correctly
The Steam Controller’s seamless behavior is centered on SteamOS and Steam Input. Epic Games Store titles, the Xbox PC app and console use may require additional configuration and are not guaranteed to be plug-and-play. Try launching the title through Steam with an appropriate controller layout, or use a conventional pad if the game expects standard inputs.
Several USB devices disconnect
Move the most demanding device to a built-in port and use a powered hub for the remaining peripherals. A bus-powered hub can become unstable when controllers, storage and other devices draw power at the same time. Test with fewer devices attached to identify whether the issue is power, the hub or an individual cable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe microSDXC card is not available
Remove and reinsert the card, restart SteamOS and confirm that the card’s capacity and format are supported. Do not assume that every high-capacity card will work simply because it fits physically. Keep important saves backed up separately.
The television shows no picture
Check that the Steam Machine is powered on, the display is set to the correct input and the HDMI cable is fully seated. Try another HDMI 2.0 cable or the DisplayPort 1.4 output with a compatible monitor. If one display input works and another does not, the limitation may be the television’s port specification rather than the Steam Machine.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Buy the Steam Controller first if your library is Steam-only and includes mouse-heavy or complex PC games.
- Buy a conventional pad instead if your priority is immediate familiarity or sharing controllers with another device.
- Choose the puck when you want magnetic charging, a permanent wireless transmitter and support for up to four Steam Controllers.
- Choose Bluetooth when you need a transmitter-free setup or plan to move the controller between devices.
- Keep a USB cable available even if you play wirelessly; it is the fastest recovery method.
- Replace the HDMI cable only when length, damage or a second-room setup justifies it.
- Use a powered USB hub when the listed USB-A and USB-C ports are occupied by several peripherals.
- Run Cat6 Ethernet when the router is nearby and connection consistency matters.
- Buy microSDXC storage only after checking SteamOS support and the capacity you need.
- Choose a television or monitor by its actual refresh rate, latency, adaptive-sync support and HDMI limits, not by resolution alone.
