Best controller and graphics settings for trying demanding game demos

For a demanding game demo, start with the game’s recommended or hardware-detected preset, then tune for stable frame pacing rather than an Ultra label. Use a complete gamepad layout, keep a mouse or touchscreen available for launchers, and lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ray tracing and foliage density before sacrificing resolution. On a Steam Deck handheld gaming PC, verify that the launcher and every in-game action work with the controller, then test the busiest scene with the display’s native resolution or the game’s quality upscaler.

What to set before launching the demo

A demanding demo can fail for two different reasons: the controller path may be incomplete, or the graphics workload may exceed what the hardware can deliver consistently. Solve both before judging the demo itself.

Begin with the recommended preset

Run the game’s hardware detection or choose its Recommended preset on the first launch. This gives you a known starting point that reflects the game’s own estimates for your GPU, CPU and memory. Do not assume that the highest preset is the correct baseline for a short trial; a demo’s heaviest area may be much more demanding than its opening scene.

After the first load, enter the busiest area available—an outdoor hub, a combat encounter with many effects, or the section with the largest view distance—and watch for uneven delivery of frames. A lower but consistent setting is preferable to a higher setting that produces hitching whenever the camera turns or an effect appears.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Confirm the complete controller path

Before beginning a run, check that the gamepad can perform every action the demo requires:

  • Move through the launcher or title screen.
  • Open and navigate the options menu.
  • Accept, cancel and go back from menu screens.
  • Control movement, camera, interaction, combat and pause functions.
  • Reach accessibility, display and input settings without a mouse.

Valve’s Steamworks guidance says the default controller configuration should provide access to all in-game functionality, and this level of completeness is required for Deck/Machine Verified status. A demo can still fall short in practice, particularly when its launcher uses a separate window or expects pointer input.

Keep a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen fallback beside you for the first launch. Use it to dismiss a launcher, select a graphics API, accept a privacy prompt or recover from a menu that does not expose controller focus. Once the demo is running, return to the gamepad so you can evaluate the intended controller experience.

Controller settings that work for most demanding demos

Use the official or default layout first

Start with the game’s official layout or Steam Input default instead of immediately remapping buttons. A developer-created layout usually reflects the game’s complete action set, including menu navigation and context-sensitive controls. Record any changes you make so you can restore the original layout if a later update changes behavior.

If an action is missing, map it only after identifying where it is used. A back-button shortcut for map, inventory or quick-save can reduce menu travel, while leaving movement, camera and primary actions on their expected positions makes a short demo easier to learn. Avoid assigning the same button to two actions that occur in the same context; accidental overlap is difficult to diagnose when you are also tuning graphics.

Check stick, trigger and vibration behavior

Use the first minutes of play to check for unintended drift, a camera that accelerates too quickly, or triggers that reach full input before their travel ends. If the game exposes dead-zone and sensitivity controls, make the smallest adjustment that removes unwanted movement. Excessive dead-zone can make aiming feel sluggish; excessive sensitivity can make a demanding scene harder to control because small corrections become abrupt.

Vibration and haptics add power consumption and can make a controller feel busy during repeated effects. Leave them at the game’s default for the first comparison. Disable or reduce them only if they interfere with aiming, create noise, or contribute to discomfort; changing them does not substitute for fixing frame-time spikes.

Account for handheld controls

Steam Deck provides full-size thumbsticks, two trackpads, four customizable back buttons and a built-in gyroscope. Those inputs can supplement a gamepad layout, but they should not be required for basic navigation. Use a trackpad or touchscreen as a pointer fallback for launchers, and reserve back buttons or gyro for optional shortcuts and aiming assistance after the default controls work.

Graphics settings: lower the expensive options first

Change one group of settings at a time, then revisit the same demanding scene. This isolates the setting responsible for a hitch and prevents a long list of changes from becoming impossible to reverse.

1. Shadows

Reduce shadow quality or shadow distance before lowering the game’s output resolution. Dynamic shadows can require substantial rendering work across a large scene. Medium shadows often preserve depth cues while reducing the cost of distant lights and cascades. If the demo offers separate contact-shadow controls, keep a modest contact-shadow level only when it materially improves object grounding.

2. Volumetric effects

Fog, smoke, clouds, shafts of light and other volumetric effects can become expensive when they cover much of the screen. Move volumetric quality from Ultra to High or Medium before changing texture quality. This usually reduces the cost of atmospheric effects while leaving character and environment textures relatively sharp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Reflections

Lower reflection quality or reflection distance when water, wet floors, glass or polished surfaces cause frame-time spikes. Screen-space reflections can flicker or disappear at lower settings; that visual compromise is usually less disruptive than a repeated hitch during camera movement.

4. Ray tracing

Disable ray-traced lighting, shadows or reflections first when a demo enables them by default. Ray tracing can multiply the workload of an already demanding scene. Keep conventional lighting at the highest level that maintains stable delivery, then re-enable one ray-traced feature only if the resulting image is worth the performance cost on your hardware.

5. Foliage and view density

Reduce foliage density, grass distance and similar object-population settings when open areas produce stalls or sustained GPU load. A lower density is most noticeable in wide outdoor views but often has less impact on interface readability than reducing resolution.

6. Texture quality

Textures are not the first setting to lower unless the system is running out of video memory. Keep texture quality high enough to avoid blurry surfaces when memory allows, and lower it only after the options above have been tested. Texture changes may require a restart or a new level load before their memory effect is visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Anti-aliasing and post-processing

If the demo separates anti-aliasing, sharpening, motion blur and depth of field, adjust them after the major lighting and geometry costs. Disable motion blur when it makes camera movement appear smeared, but do not confuse that preference with a frame-rate improvement. Sharpening can restore some perceived detail after an upscaler is enabled, although too much sharpening produces halos.

Resolution and upscaling choices

Preserve native resolution when it remains stable

Native output keeps interface text and fine geometry clearest. Preserve it when the demanding scene remains smooth after the expensive lighting and geometry settings have been reduced. On Steam Deck, Valve’s Verified criteria expect support for the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, good default settings, legible text and a controller-navigable launcher.

Use the game’s quality upscaler when native output is too heavy

When native resolution cannot maintain consistent frame pacing, select the game’s quality-oriented upscaling mode rather than immediately choosing the most aggressive performance mode. The upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output for the display. Quality modes generally retain more detail than Balanced or Performance modes, but the correct choice depends on the demo’s reconstruction implementation and your screen size.

Example: AMD FSR 1.0 on Steam Deck

Larian’s official guidance for Baldur’s Gate 3 recommends default medium video options with AMD FSR 1.0 set to Balanced when performance is poor on Steam Deck. Treat this as a game-specific example, not a universal prescription: another demo may use a different upscaler, a different internal resolution, or a different bottleneck.

Choosing between viable presets

Two presets can produce similar average smoothness while feeling very different. Compare them on the four criteria below, using the same heavy scene and the same controller action sequence.

Comparison axis What to observe Preferred result
Frame-time stability Hitches during camera turns, combat, streaming or large effects The preset with steadier delivery in the heaviest scene
Image clarity Text legibility, thin geometry, foliage and distant detail at the display’s native output The clearest image that does not introduce disruptive stutter
Input latency and controller completeness Menu focus, button response, camera control and access to every required action The layout that works without a mouse during play
Power and fan cost on a handheld Fan noise, heat and battery drain during a sustained run The lower-cost preset when visual differences are minor

If one preset is sharper but produces visible stalls and another is slightly softer yet steady, choose the steady option for a demo session. A stable frame sequence makes controller timing easier to judge and prevents a graphics spike from being mistaken for input failure.

Steam Deck setup for demanding demos

Verify the exact hardware and software context

Steam Deck exists in LCD and OLED versions, and the installed SteamOS, Proton and game build can affect behavior. Confirm which model you are using, update the system and game, and note whether the demo is running through Proton or a native Linux build. Do not transfer a setting recommendation from one model or operating environment without checking the result in the demo’s heaviest scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a sensible first pass

  1. Open the demo with the default or recommended preset.
  2. Confirm that the launcher and all menus accept gamepad input; use the touchscreen or trackpad if they do not.
  3. Keep the Deck’s default resolution at 1280×800 or 1280×720 when the game supports it.
  4. Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing and foliage density in that order if frame pacing is uneven.
  5. Enable the game’s quality upscaler if native output remains too demanding.
  6. Play the busiest scene for several minutes, checking text, camera response, fan behavior and repeated hitches.

Steam Deck is designed to run demanding AAA games and includes multiple control methods, but a Verified label does not guarantee that every demo build behaves identically after an update. Treat the label as a useful compatibility signal, then perform the controller and heavy-scene checks yourself.

Power and heat trade-offs

Higher settings can increase fan noise, heat and battery use even when the frame rate appears acceptable. For a portable demo session, a modest reduction in volumetrics, reflections or foliage may provide a better overall experience than retaining every visual effect. Compare presets over a sustained run rather than judging power cost from the first minute after launch.

Windows 11 settings for windowed and multi-GPU systems

Enable Optimizations for windowed games when appropriate

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles. Microsoft documents that the feature can reduce presentation latency in windowed or borderless modes. Open Windows Settings, go to System → Display → Graphics, select the game, choose Options, and enable the optimization if the title is compatible.

Restart the game after changing the option. The setting does not apply to every graphics API or every demo, so leave it disabled if the game behaves worse and compare in the same window mode.

  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Select the high-performance GPU

Systems with integrated and discrete GPUs can launch a demo on the lower-power adapter by mistake. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add or select the demo, choose Options, select High performance, save, and restart the game. Verify that the change applies to the executable that actually renders the demo; a separate launcher may have its own entry.

Recovering from a graphics change that prevents launch

A failed launch after changing resolution, display mode or graphics API is usually recoverable without reinstalling the demo.

  1. Close the demo and return to Steam.
  2. Open the game’s Properties window and use the Launch Options field to apply a supported startup argument that restores a safer display mode or API.
  3. Launch the demo, return to its video settings and choose a conservative resolution and window mode.
  4. Remove the temporary launch option and restart once more.

Steam Support documents launch options as a recovery path and notes that an alternate DirectX mode can help some older graphics hardware when the game supports that mode. Do not enter random flags copied from another title; launch arguments are engine-specific, and an unsupported argument can create a new failure.

Diagnosing stutter, latency and controller failures

The picture is sharp but motion hitches

  • Repeat the run in the demo’s busiest scene rather than a quiet area.
  • Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing and foliage density.
  • Check whether a windowed or borderless mode is involved and, on Windows 11, test Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 or 11 titles.
  • Close background applications that compete for CPU, GPU or disk access.
  • Restart after changing the graphics API, window mode or Windows graphics assignment.

The image is smooth but looks soft or unstable

  • Move the upscaler from Performance or Balanced to Quality.
  • Restore native output if the hardware can sustain it.
  • Inspect text, foliage and thin geometry for shimmer before deciding that a higher preset is better.
  • Reduce a lighting or geometry setting instead of lowering output resolution further.

The controller works in play but not in the launcher

  • Use the touchscreen, trackpad or mouse to pass the launcher.
  • Check the Steam Input layout and confirm that menu navigation has focus, confirm and back actions.
  • Look for a separate launcher executable and configure its controller support if Steam exposes it.
  • Once inside the demo, verify options and accessibility menus before starting the test run.

The demo will not launch after a video change

  • Use Steam launch options to force a supported safe mode or alternate DirectX mode.
  • Undo the last resolution, API or fullscreen change.
  • Restart the game after the setting is corrected.
  • If the problem persists, remember that hardware, drivers, Proton or DirectX versions and the demo engine can interact in ways that require title-specific support.

How to validate a setting without a misleading benchmark

No authoritative source establishes a universal FPS target for every demanding demo. Hardware, drivers, Proton or DirectX versions, display refresh rate and engine behavior all change the result. Steam Support also notes that the number of unique hardware and software configurations makes detailed per-user analysis impractical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable observation instead of chasing a single number:

  1. Select one preset and record resolution, upscaler mode, window mode and major effects settings.
  2. Load the same demanding scene and follow the same route or perform the same combat sequence.
  3. Watch for repeated hitches, delayed camera response, unreadable text and controller actions that fail to register.
  4. Repeat after changing one setting group.
  5. Keep the configuration that remains stable and readable during the heaviest portion of the demo.

If the demo offers an in-game frame-time graph, use it to identify spikes, but do not treat an average frame-rate figure as proof of smoothness. A brief high average can hide recurring stalls that are obvious during camera movement.

Quick setup checklist

  • Recommended or hardware-detected preset selected.
  • Controller layout opens the launcher, menus and every required in-game action.
  • Mouse, trackpad or touchscreen available as a launcher fallback.
  • Shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing and foliage reduced before resolution.
  • Native output retained when stable; quality upscaling used when it is not.
  • Steam Deck tested at 1280×800 or 1280×720 when supported, with readable text.
  • Windows 11 high-performance GPU selected on multi-GPU systems.
  • Windowed-game optimization tested only for compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 titles, followed by a restart.
  • Launch options prepared as a recovery path before experimenting with display APIs.
  • Final choice validated in the demo’s busiest scene, including fan and power behavior on a handheld.

Recommended starting profiles

Desktop with one modern GPU

Use the Recommended preset at native output. If the heavy scene stutters, lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing and foliage in sequence. Keep textures and interface resolution higher when memory allows. Enable the game’s Quality upscaler only after those changes fail to produce stable pacing.

Windows 11 laptop with integrated and discrete graphics

Assign the demo to the High performance GPU in Windows Graphics settings, restart, and test in the intended window mode. For a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 title, compare Optimizations for windowed games in borderless or windowed mode. Keep a controller and mouse available because laptop launchers frequently expose pointer-only prompts.

Steam Deck handheld gaming PC

Begin with the default or recommended settings at 1280×800 or 1280×720 when supported. Confirm controller navigation, then lower the major lighting and density options. Use a quality upscaler if native output is too demanding, and judge the final profile by frame pacing, readable text, fan noise and battery behavior during the busiest scene.
