Best cloud storage services for backing up a large photo library (2026)

For most mixed-device households, Google One with Google Photos is the best starting point: its US plan page lists 2TB for $9.99 per month and 5TB for $19.99, and storage can be shared with up to five other people. Choose iCloud+ instead when your household is centered on iPhone, iPad and Mac. For several computers or a 5TB-plus archive, IDrive is the better backup-oriented option; for one Mac or Windows computer with an exceptionally large local library, Backblaze provides unlimited computer backup for $9 per month.

Those services do different jobs. Google Photos, Apple Photos, OneDrive and Dropbox combine cloud storage with synchronization, browsing and sharing. IDrive and Backblaze are primarily backup systems. A dependable photo-preservation plan normally keeps the working library on your computer, a second copy on an external drive and a third copy in the cloud.

Quick recommendations by situation

Your situation Best starting point Why
Around 2TB, mixed phones and computers Google One with Google Photos 2TB costs $9.99 per month on Google’s US plan page, with strong photo search and sharing for up to five additional people.
iPhone, iPad and Mac household iCloud+ Apple Photos stays available across Apple devices, and Apple offers a 2TB tier for $9.99 per month plus family sharing.
5TB or more across several computers IDrive Personal Personal tiers run from 5TB to 100TB and cover multiple computers; the listed 5TB price is $11.99 per month.
One Mac or Windows computer with a huge local archive Backblaze Personal Computer Backup The service advertises $9 per month, encrypted uploads and unlimited backup with no data cap or overage charge.
Cross-platform folders and simple recovery Dropbox Plus Dropbox supports iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and cameras; Plus lists 2TB for $9.99 per month and 30 days to restore deleted files.
Already paying for Microsoft 365 OneDrive OneDrive saves, edits and shares files and photos across devices, but the exact storage allocation and country price depend on the Microsoft 365 plan and region.

What kind of service do you actually need?

The word “backup” hides two different designs. A synchronized photo library keeps a current cloud copy that you can browse, search and share from phones and browsers. A computer-backup service continuously copies files from a specified Mac or Windows computer so you can retrieve them after disk failure, theft or accidental deletion. The first is convenient for everyday access; the second is usually better at covering an entire computer without reorganizing your folders.

Photo-library services

Google Photos and Apple Photos are catalogues as well as storage. They can present years of images by date and other searchable attributes, and they are designed for opening the same library on multiple devices. OneDrive and Dropbox are more folder-oriented: they synchronize files and make sharing straightforward, but their photo browsing is less central to the product.

Backup-first services

IDrive and Backblaze emphasize recovery. IDrive is suited to several computers, external drives and large archives. Backblaze is focused on backing up data from one Mac or Windows computer and retrieving files when something goes wrong; it is not presented as a full photo-catalogue replacement.

Current capacities and prices

The figures below are the vendors’ listed prices and policies available on October 20, 2026. Prices are recurring unless noted otherwise; taxes, promotions and regional differences can change the amount charged at checkout.

Service Published capacity and price Devices and sharing Recovery detail stated by the vendor
Google One / Google Photos Google accounts include up to 15GB. Google’s US plan page lists 100GB at $1.99/month, 2TB at $9.99/month and 5TB at $19.99/month. Mixed-device use; storage sharing with up to five other people. Current photo and video backups use Google One capacity. Photos and videos backed up in High quality or Express quality before June 1, 2021 do not count toward storage.
Apple iCloud+ 50GB at $0.99/month, 200GB at $2.99/month, 2TB at $9.99/month and 6TB at $29.99/month on Apple’s listed plan page. Automatic availability across Apple devices; family sharing. Apple describes iCloud as automatically keeping photos and files backed up and available. A specific deleted-file retention period is not stated here.
Microsoft OneDrive Exact storage allocation and country price are not stated in the available product information; some Microsoft 365 plans bundle OneDrive storage. Files and photos can be saved, edited and shared across devices. A specific photo-deletion retention period is not stated here.
Dropbox Plus 2TB at $9.99/month. Photo backup from iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and cameras; folder synchronization and sharing. 30 days to restore deleted files on the listed Plus plan.
IDrive Personal 5TB at $11.99/month is listed; personal tiers extend through 10TB, 20TB, 50TB and 100TB. Multiple computers; can include external drives and large archives. Drive-image backup can target a secondary location such as an external hard drive or the cloud. A universal deleted-file period is not stated here.
Backblaze Personal Computer Backup $9/month personal pricing; backup is described as unlimited. Mac and Windows computers; designed around one computer’s data rather than a browsable photo catalogue. Encrypted uploads and unlimited file restore are listed. Unlimited means as much data as desired from Mac and Windows computers, without data caps or overage charges.

Best choice for a 2TB photo library

Google One and Google Photos

Google is the most balanced option when a library is spread across Android phones, iPhones, Windows PCs and Macs. The 2TB tier costs $9.99 per month on Google’s US plan page, matching Apple’s listed 2TB price, while the 5TB tier costs $19.99 per month. Storage can be shared with up to five other people, so a household can place several users’ photos and other files under one allowance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Photos is the strongest fit when finding pictures matters as much as storing them. The service is built around a searchable photo timeline rather than only a folder tree. Remember that current backups consume Google One storage. The exception is historical: photos and videos uploaded in High quality or Express quality before June 1, 2021 do not count toward storage under Google’s stated policy. That grandfathered treatment does not make new uploads free.

iCloud+ for an Apple-only household

iCloud+ is the natural alternative when everyone uses Apple Photos. Apple lists 2TB at $9.99 per month and 6TB at $29.99 per month, with smaller 50GB and 200GB plans at $0.99 and $2.99 per month. Family sharing lets one plan serve multiple household members.

Apple’s product page says, “iCloud automatically keeps all your photos, files, and more backed up and available anywhere you go.” That convenience depends on using Apple’s Photos and iCloud settings consistently on each device. If your household includes Windows PCs, Android phones or cameras that are not part of the Apple workflow, test the import and access steps before moving the entire archive.

Cheapest practical way to protect 5TB

Compare the recurring prices first

Among the published capacities in this comparison, Google’s 5TB plan is $19.99 per month, while IDrive lists 5TB at $11.99 per month. Backblaze costs $9 per month but is unlimited computer backup rather than a selectable 5TB cloud drive, so the lower price is not an apples-to-apples replacement for a multi-device, browsable library. Apple’s listed 6TB plan is $29.99 per month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the 5TB library lives on one Mac or Windows computer and you mainly need disaster recovery, Backblaze can be the lowest recurring-cost route. If the archive is divided among several computers, external drives or a network of folders, IDrive’s multiple-computer coverage and 5TB-to-100TB tiers are more aligned with the job. If you need a searchable, shareable photo timeline on phones, Google Photos may justify its higher 5TB price.

Leave headroom for growth

Do not size a plan to the exact number shown by your operating system. RAW files, edited exports, phone videos and future imports can consume hundreds of gigabytes unexpectedly. A 2TB library that is already close to the limit should be treated as a 5TB planning problem, especially when the same account also stores documents or device backups.

When IDrive is the better fit

IDrive Personal is designed for people who need one backup account to cover multiple computers. Its listed personal capacities are 5TB, 10TB, 20TB, 50TB and 100TB, and the 5TB tier is listed at $11.99 per month. That makes it easier to scale a photography archive than a service whose main consumer tier stops at 2TB.

Use it for distributed libraries

Choose IDrive when images are on a desktop, a laptop and one or more attached drives, or when you want a drive-image backup in addition to ordinary file backup. IDrive’s pricing material describes placing a drive image in a secondary location such as an external hard drive or the cloud. Map which folders and external volumes are included; a cloud account cannot restore files it was never told to back up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the trade-off

IDrive is backup-oriented rather than a dedicated visual catalogue. It can protect the files, but you may still prefer a local photo application for ratings, albums and edits. Confirm the retention and version settings you need, because a universal deleted-file period is not specified in the available plan information.

Is Backblaze good for a large photo archive?

Backblaze is a strong choice when the archive is local to one Mac or Windows computer and the priority is having an off-site copy without a storage ceiling. Personal Computer Backup is listed at $9 per month, with encrypted uploads and unlimited file restore. Backblaze defines unlimited backup as backing up as much data as desired from Mac and Windows computers without data caps or overage charges.

Where it excels

  • It can protect a very large local library without selecting a higher storage tier as the archive grows.
  • It is designed to back up all data on a covered Mac or Windows computer, rather than requiring a photo folder to be manually curated.
  • Encrypted uploads and unlimited restore are explicitly part of the published product information.

Where it is not a replacement

  • It is retrieval-oriented backup, not a full photo browsing and search environment like Google Photos or Apple Photos.
  • If your originals are spread across several computers, check the coverage model carefully; the product description is centered on computer backup, while IDrive explicitly supports multiple computers.
  • A backup copy should not be your only working copy. Keep the local library and a separate external copy so you can continue working during an outage or account problem.

Dropbox and OneDrive for cross-platform folders

Dropbox Plus

Dropbox Plus lists 2TB at $9.99 per month and supports photo backup from iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and cameras. Its strength is a familiar folder model: put the original files in a synchronized location, share folders when needed and use the listed 30-day window to restore deleted files.

This approach works well for photographers who organize by year, event or client and want the same folders on several systems. It is less specialized than a photo catalogue, so search, face grouping and timeline browsing may not match a dedicated photo service. Dropbox documents backup of one computer and one external hard drive; include those sources deliberately rather than assuming every attached volume is covered.

OneDrive

OneDrive saves, accesses, edits and shares files and photos across devices and is bundled with some Microsoft 365 plans. It can be economical when you already pay for that ecosystem, but the exact storage allowance and price vary by plan and country. Verify the allocation shown at purchase and confirm that it exceeds the size of your photo library plus expected growth.

Sync is not the same as an independent backup

A synchronized service aims to make every device agree. If you delete a folder, overwrite an edit or allow a bad change to sync, that change can propagate to the cloud and other devices. A backup system keeps recovery copies according to its retention rules, but it still needs a complete source and a tested restore path.

For valuable photographs, use a practical 3-2-1-style arrangement:

  • Working copy: the computer or photo library you actively edit.
  • Local backup: an external hard drive stored separately from the computer when possible.
  • Cloud copy: Google, Apple, Dropbox, IDrive or Backblaze, selected according to your device and recovery needs.

Do not treat a second folder on the same internal disk as a separate copy. It will not help if that disk fails, is encrypted by malware or is stolen with the computer.

How to set up a large photo-library backup

  1. Measure the source. Check the size of the original photo and video folders, the Photos library package if you use one, RAW files, edited exports and attached drives. Record the total and the fastest expected growth over the next year.
  2. Choose the service type. Select Google Photos or iCloud+ when browsing, search and device availability are central. Select Dropbox or OneDrive for folder synchronization and sharing. Select IDrive for several computers or 5TB-plus archives. Select Backblaze for unlimited protection of one Mac or Windows computer.
  3. Create the local copy. Use an external hard drive at least as large as the source, with additional room for growth and versions. Keep it disconnected when backups are complete if ransomware exposure is a concern.
  4. Install and sign in on every source device. A plan only protects devices and folders that are included. On phones, enable photo upload and choose whether cellular data is allowed. On computers, verify that the intended photo-library folder or drive is selected.
  5. Let the first upload finish. The initial transfer can take days over a slow connection. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep from interrupting the job and check the service’s status until the queue reports completion.
  6. Check the count and dates. Compare representative folders, recent phone photos, older RAW files and large videos. A completed upload indicator does not prove that an excluded external drive or unsupported library location was copied.
  7. Test a restore. Download several originals, an edited file and a video to a different folder or computer. Open them and verify metadata before deleting anything from the source.
  8. Schedule maintenance. Review storage use monthly, connect the external drive for scheduled updates and perform a small restore at least quarterly. Revisit the plan when the library approaches 80% of its allowance.

Upload, restore and deletion pitfalls

Phone uploads do not prove that originals are safe

Some mobile workflows optimize images or upload only selected folders. Confirm that full-resolution originals, Live Photos or equivalent motion files, RAW images and videos are included if those matter to you. Compare a downloaded file’s dimensions and metadata with the local original.

Edited versions can be separate files

Photo applications may store edits inside a library database while the original remains elsewhere. Back up both the library database and exported originals. If you only back up an export folder, you may lose albums, ratings or non-destructive edits even though the pixels survive.

Deletion windows are not universal

Dropbox Plus explicitly lists 30 days to restore deleted files. The supplied plan information does not give an equivalent universal retention period for Google One, iCloud+, OneDrive or IDrive, so check the current recovery settings before relying on them. Backblaze lists unlimited file restore, but that statement describes restore capability rather than a promise that every deleted version is retained forever.

Account access is part of recovery

Use a unique password, enable the strongest available multi-factor authentication and store recovery codes offline. A perfectly uploaded archive is useless if you cannot sign in after losing your phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and security questions

Backblaze explicitly lists encrypted uploads. For Google, Apple, OneDrive, Dropbox and IDrive, the supplied plan details do not establish a comparable end-to-end encryption model or a particular client-side encryption option. Review each service’s current security documentation and settings if your photographs contain sensitive personal, medical or professional material.

Encryption does not replace account security. Protect the account, limit shared links and folders, remove old collaborators and avoid leaving the only copy of recovery codes inside the same cloud account. For client work, document who can access the archive and how long shared links remain active.

A decision checklist

  • Pick Google One if you need a searchable photo experience across mixed devices and your target is 2TB or 5TB.
  • Pick iCloud+ if Apple Photos is the center of the household and you want 2TB or 6TB with family sharing.
  • Pick IDrive if several computers, external drives or a 5TB-to-100TB archive must be covered under one backup-oriented account.
  • Pick Backblaze if one Mac or Windows computer contains the archive and unlimited backup matters more than photo-catalogue features.
  • Pick Dropbox if cross-platform folders, camera uploads and a stated 30-day deleted-file restore window are the priority.
  • Pick OneDrive if Microsoft 365 already supplies the account and its verified storage allocation is sufficient.

Whichever service you select, keep the original library, maintain an external-drive copy and perform a real restore before trusting the archive. That combination protects against both hardware failure and the more subtle risk of synchronizing an unwanted deletion everywhere.
