Recommended Free Tools
For most streamers, OBS Studio is the best place to start: it is free, open source, and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Choose vMix if you use Windows and want a broader live-production suite with documented green- and blue-screen keying. Choose NVIDIA Broadcast if you want AI background removal without a physical screen and have a supported RTX-class GPU. These tools serve different workflows; the available product information does not establish a controlled performance winner.
Chroma key or AI background removal: which do you need?
Traditional chroma key removes a selected color—usually green or blue—from a camera image so another image or video can show through. It relies on a physical, colored backdrop. NVIDIA Broadcast takes a different approach: AI processes a webcam feed to remove its background, then replace it with an image or video, or blur it. A physical green screen is not the same requirement for both methods.

For either approach, results depend on your camera, movement, room conditions, computer load, and configuration. With a physical screen, aim for a clean, evenly colored background and check the keyed image for unwanted edges or color spill. No single preset can be assumed to work well for every room and camera.

There is no controlled head-to-head test here comparing edge quality, motion handling, or resource use, so treat the “best” choice as a fit decision, not a quality ranking. NVIDIA says the effect’s performance impact varies with the GPU, game, camera resolution and frame rate, and enabled effects.

Which software should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio for a flexible free starting point
OBS is a strong first option if you want to build a stream from scenes and sources, and you do not want to pay for the production software. It supports sources such as webcams, capture cards, images, and windows. OBS itself advises using its Auto Configuration Wizard: streaming performance depends on factors including encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the OBS system requirements and run a full test rather than treating basic compatibility as a performance guarantee.
If you intend to use a green screen in OBS, verify the current filter steps and controls in OBS’s own documentation before relying on a particular menu path or setting. The official OBS pages cited here do not establish those exact controls.

Choose vMix for Windows-based production with documented keying controls
vMix combines chroma keying with a wider live-production toolset. Its guide documents green/blue keying, virtual sets, tolerance controls, and a filter intended to address green or blue halos. Adjust controls against your actual camera feed: inspect edges and spill while the subject moves, and do not assume a preset will suit every screen, camera, and room.
vMix describes its software as live-production software for recording and streaming from a PC or laptop. It is Windows-based, and its hardware guidance varies with production scale and graphics hardware. Confirm your machine’s fit on the vMix hardware page. Its product page advertises a 60-day full-featured trial; verify current terms and prices before committing.

Choose NVIDIA Broadcast to remove a webcam background without a physical screen
NVIDIA describes its virtual-background effect as using AI to remove a webcam background and replace it with game footage, an image, or a blur. Broadcast creates virtual Windows camera and audio devices that you can select in supported streaming apps, including OBS. This is useful when you do not have a physical screen, but the reviewed FAQ’s RTX-class GPU requirements rule it out for systems without supported NVIDIA hardware.
Effects use system resources, and NVIDIA says the impact depends on your GPU, game, camera resolution and frame rate, and enabled effects. Test the camera and stream together with your intended effects active. Check the current NVIDIA Broadcast FAQ for requirements and supported features, since those may change.

How to get a cleaner keyed image
- Set up the physical screen and camera. Use a clean, evenly colored green or blue backdrop, frame the subject, and check the camera image before opening the keyer. Uneven color, shadows, and color reflected onto the subject can make the result harder to clean up.
- Choose the key color and tune against the live feed. In vMix, use its documented green/blue key and tolerance controls. Inspect the subject’s outline and watch for green or blue halos as the subject moves. For OBS, confirm the current chroma-key filter workflow and controls in official OBS documentation rather than relying on unverified menu steps.
- Check the complete scene. Add the background you actually plan to use and review the composite at your intended camera framing. Look closely at hair, moving hands, and edges; a clean-looking still frame does not prove the result will hold up during motion.
- Test the entire stream on your computer. Run the keyer or AI effects, other scene sources, and the intended encoder, resolution, and frame rate together. For OBS, start with the Auto Configuration Wizard and then test your full scene. For NVIDIA Broadcast, select its virtual camera in the streaming app and verify the feed there.
Compatibility and cost checks before you commit
- Check the operating system first. OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; vMix is Windows-based; the reviewed NVIDIA Broadcast FAQ specifies Windows 10 64-bit.
- Match the hardware to the method. NVIDIA Broadcast requires supported RTX-class hardware under the reviewed FAQ. For OBS and vMix, a compatible operating system alone does not establish that your system can handle your intended scenes and stream settings.
- Budget for production scope, not just keying. OBS is free and open source. vMix offers a broader production suite with trial, lifetime-license, and subscription terms listed on its product page. NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate AI effects workflow; check NVIDIA’s current terms and availability.
- Trial the real setup before a scheduled broadcast. Camera, movement, scene complexity, output settings, and computer load affect the final result. Test with the same equipment and configuration you plan to use live.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules still apply
Chroma keying changes the appearance of a camera image; it does not grant rights to music, footage, images, or other material used in a stream. Make sure you have permission to use every element in your production and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. Background removal does not make reused or copyrighted content permissible.
