Best Cheap Smartwatch Picks for GPS, iPhone and Running

Amazfit Active 2 is the best-supported cheap all-rounder, but iPhone owners, Android users and beginner runners may prefer a different 2026 pick.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Amazfit Active 2 is the strongest all-round cheap smartwatch pick for most buyers, especially below $100. It combines onboard GPS, health and sleep tracking, sports modes, and a 10-day rated battery life. Choose an Apple Watch SE 3 for iPhone integration, a discounted Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 for Android, or a Garmin Forerunner 165 if running metrics matter more than a broad app store.

“Cheap” depends on where you shop: US guide prices and UK budget bands are not interchangeable. The picks below reflect 2026 buying guides, not live price checks; confirm the current price, phone compatibility, and exact model before buying.

Best for beginner runners Garmin Forerunner 165 iPhone and Android, according to WIRED Up to 11 days advertised battery life in WIRED’s guide; no price figure stated in the supplied guide summary Training-focused rather than a pick for a rich third-party app ecosystem

Battery figures are manufacturer or editorially reported ratings, not results from one shared test. Actual runtime varies with settings and use, so treat the numbers as a rough comparison rather than a guarantee.

Which cheap smartwatch should you buy?

Amazfit Active 2: the best inexpensive all-rounder

At a $99 starting price in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup, the Active 2 is the clearest choice if you want GPS, general health and sleep tracking, sports modes, swimproofing, and long rated battery life without paying for a premium smartwatch. TechRadar also ranked it as its best cheap, system-agnostic pick at $99. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both list 10 days of battery life.

Military Smart Watch Built-in GPS,Bluetooth Calling, for iPhone & Android
  • 【Precision GPS Tracking】As a full-featured smart watch, it supports over 100 sports modes with the advanced GOMORE motion algorithm. GPS delivers precise route mapping and waypoint return for hiking or running, making every outdoor fitness activity more accurate.
  • 【Sports Companion】This Military smartwatch is built for outdoor and tough fitness training – featuring a 2.02-inch display, 2ATM water resistance, and smart water ejection, reliable for swimming, rain, or harsh conditions.
  • 【24/7 Wellness Monitor】This smartwatch provides 24/7 wellness tracking – monitor heart rate, sleep status, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), pressure levels, and HRV. Also includes one-click measurement for quick daily check-ins.
  • 【Stay Connected Anywhere】Stay connected during workouts with this smart watch – Bluetooth 5.4 supports hands-free calling, message alerts (from WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, etc.), and music control. It also features a voice assistant, remote camera shutter, and customizable notification modes.
  • 【Rugged Outdoor Gear】Take this smart watch on your next adventure – it includes essential outdoor tools: pressure measurement, altitude and atmospheric pressure tracking, compass, severe weather alerts, GPS time calibration, and waypoint return. Ideal for hiking, camping, or mountaineering. Also features a smart do-not-disturb mode, lift-to-wake screen, and customizable always-on display.

The compromise is software: its operating system is less polished and its third-party app selection is limited compared with Apple and Samsung. Tom’s Guide also raises concerns about heart-rate and elevation data, so runners or anyone relying on precise readings should weigh that caveat rather than assuming every metric is equally dependable.

Apple Watch SE 3: the iPhone-friendly choice

If you use an iPhone and value Apple integration, the SE 3 is the natural budget entry point in this group. Tom’s Guide identifies it as iOS-only and lists GPS, an always-on display, and an 18-hour rated battery. Its guide gives a $249 value price; WIRED’s page showed a $229 sale listing when accessed, which is a time-sensitive snapshot rather than a current offer. See Tom’s Guide and WIRED.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7: Android value if the discount is right

The Galaxy Watch 7 is an Android-only option with GPS and optional LTE. Tom’s Guide rates it for 24 hours of battery life, extending to 40 hours in low-power mode. Because it is an older generation in the 2026 buying context, its value depends on the discount available for the exact configuration; the guide does not establish a fixed price. Some broader health features also require a Samsung Galaxy phone. Details are in Tom’s Guide’s roundup.

Garmin Forerunner 165: the running-first pick

For a beginner runner, the Forerunner 165 puts built-in GPS and running and training metrics ahead of smartwatch app breadth. WIRED lists compatibility with iOS and Android, water resistance to 50 meters (5 ATM), and up to 11 days of advertised battery life; its reviewer reported around a week of use. These are WIRED’s guide figures, not a universal runtime promise. See WIRED and Wareable.

How to choose a budget smartwatch

Start with your phone

  • iPhone: The SE 3 is the native Apple option here. The Active 2 and Forerunner 165 are also described as cross-platform by the cited guides.
  • Android: The Galaxy Watch 7 works with Android, but some health features need a Samsung Galaxy phone. The Active 2 and Forerunner 165 are other cross-platform choices.
  • Check your exact setup: Confirm required phone operating-system versions and feature-by-feature support with the manufacturer before buying; “compatible” does not mean every feature works on every phone.

Decide whether you want apps or fitness tools

Apple and Samsung offer fuller app ecosystems. The Active 2 covers common smartwatch and fitness needs with less third-party app depth, while Garmin prioritizes training features. Pick based on what you will use: notifications and apps, everyday tracking, or structured running data.

Match battery expectations to your routine

The four stated ratings span 18 hours for the Apple Watch SE 3, 24 hours for Galaxy Watch 7 (40 in low-power mode), 10 days for Active 2, and up to 11 days for Forerunner 165. They come from different guides and conditions, so they are not directly comparable test results. Frequent GPS use, display settings, and connectivity can affect the time between charges.

Check GPS and workout requirements

Compare the exact price and variant

Guide prices are not live offers. Before checkout, compare the current price, watch size, GPS or LTE configuration, generation, seller, and stock. An older model can be worthwhile at a discount, but only if the configuration and phone support fit your needs.

What “cheap” means—and what testing can tell you

These recommendations use US dollar prices where the cited guides provide them. In the UK, Which? defines its budget smartwatch category as watches up to £200 and notes that buyers under £100 are likely to accept compromises; it says built-in GPS is more expected above £100. Those UK thresholds should not be treated as direct equivalents to US guide prices. Which?’s guide, dated 14 August 2026, describes testing sensor accuracy against reference devices and assessing personal-data security, scratch, drop and water resistance, screen readability, battery, and charging. Its opened page does not expose model-level scores without membership. See Which?’s UK buying guide.

The recommendations here reflect the named publishers’ findings: Tom’s Guide and TechRadar present expert picks, while Wareable describes its selections as tried and tested. They do not establish a single controlled comparison across all four models. Treat the cited battery figures as ratings or guide-reported use, and check model-specific testing where measurement accuracy or durability is a deciding factor.
