Pixel 11 includes Car Crash Detection, but you need to set it up in the Personal Safety app. Turn it on before you drive: if the phone detects a possible severe crash, it can alert you and, if you do not respond, attempt to call emergency services and share your approximate location.
How to turn on Car Crash Detection on Pixel 11
- Open the Personal Safety app.
- Tap Features.
- Scroll to Car Crash Detection and tap Set up.
- When prompted, allow location, microphone and physical activity access.
- Make sure the phone has a SIM. Google says the feature requires one.
Google lists Car Crash Detection among Pixel 11’s Safety features on its Pixel 11 specifications page. Setup instructions are in Google’s emergency-help guidance. App labels and instructions can vary by region and Android version.

What happens after a possible crash
With Car Crash Detection enabled, the phone can assess whether you may have been in a severe car crash. It vibrates, sounds an alarm and asks whether you need help. Google says you have 60 seconds to respond: you can choose to call emergency services or cancel.
If you do not respond within 60 seconds, the phone turns on speakerphone, attempts to call emergency services, announces that a car crash happened and shares the device’s approximate location. These are attempted actions, not a guarantee that a call will connect or responders will receive your location.

Google describes the feature as using Activity Recognition and device inputs such as accelerometer, GPS and microphone data to distinguish a possible crash from other motion. That is Google’s explanation of how the system works, not a published accuracy or success rate. Its Car Crash Detection explainer describes the feature as ambient detection that can activate when you are driving, riding as a passenger or in a taxi.
Conditions that can prevent it from working
- No SIM: Google says a SIM is required.
- Airplane mode or Battery Saver: Car Crash Detection does not work while either is on.
- Roaming outside the SIM’s country: Google says the feature works only in the country associated with the phone’s SIM.
- Permissions or connectivity: Detection and emergency calling or location sharing can depend on permissions, device and carrier support, country, and available connectivity.
Before relying on the feature, finish setup, grant the requested permissions and avoid Airplane mode or Battery Saver while driving. If you travel, remember that availability is tied to the SIM’s country.

Car Crash Detection is different from Emergency SOS
Car Crash Detection is automatic: it reacts to a possible severe crash and prompts you. Emergency SOS is a separate, manual action. Google says to press the power button five times or more, then follow the countdown or confirmation behavior configured on the phone. Its recipients and behavior depend on your settings; do not treat SOS as the same feature as automatic crash detection. See Google’s Pixel emergency guidance for the applicable setup details.

Car Crash Detection is an emergency aid, not a guarantee that every crash will be detected, that a call will connect, or that help will arrive. Google’s Pixel safety overview presents it among Pixel’s safety functions, but the cited official pages do not publish a detection accuracy rate or a population-level count of lives saved.
