For US shoppers, RTINGS currently names the TCL QM6K its general budget pick; its under-$500 guide instead favors the Hisense U6SF Pro. For the lowest prices or a very large screen, consider the Hisense QD6QF, with trade-offs in dark-scene performance.

Quick picks by budget and use
| Need | Model to check | Why it stands out | Trade-off or price context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best general budget candidate | TCL QM6K | RTINGS names it its best budget TV and notes deep blacks alongside bright elements and vibrant colors. | Bright objects and subtitles can create a glow in dark scenes. RTINGS’ broader 4K roundup updated September 11, 2026 says the Hisense U6SF Pro replaced it because the Hisense performed better and was more widely available. |
| Brighter-room step-up | Hisense U7SG | RTINGS describes it as brighter than the QM6K, with a matte screen and stronger dark-scene performance. | RTINGS says its full price is above $1,000, with regular sales at $600–$700; that is a reported pattern, not a guaranteed current price. |
| Lowest cost or big screen | Hisense QD6QF | RTINGS describes a 55-inch version as a value pick under $300 and an 85-inch version as regularly available just below $1,000. | It lacks local dimming and has weaker dark-scene performance. Verify the exact size and price. |
| Under-$500 shopping | Hisense U6SF Pro; TCL 65QM5K; Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K | RTINGS’ guide discusses these as alternatives, including the TCL 65QM5K as frequently sold below $500 and the Vizio as a size/value option. | Features and interfaces vary. The U6SF Pro replaced the QM6K in RTINGS’ under-$500 guide updated September 15, 2026, due to performance, price, and QM6K availability at that tier. |

If your ceiling is under $300
Look at the Hisense QD6QF, especially if a 55-inch set meets your needs. RTINGS identifies that size as a value pick under $300. At this price, do not assume every size or listing has the same price: verify the model suffix and screen diagonal on the product page. The set has no local dimming, which limits its ability to keep dark areas deep when bright content appears on screen. RTINGS’ QD6QF review covers the model.

If your ceiling is under $500
Start with the Hisense U6SF Pro in RTINGS’ September 15, 2026 under-$500 guide. The TCL QM6K remains relevant in broader budget coverage, but it had become harder to find below $500; the newer guide says the Hisense performs better and costs less. The TCL 65QM5K is another option RTINGS describes as frequently sold below $500, while the Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K can be worth checking when size and value matter. Compare the exact screen size and features rather than assuming every version stays under the same ceiling. See the guide’s current picks and model details.
If you can spend more for size or brightness
For an 85-inch screen, RTINGS says the QD6QF is regularly purchasable just below $1,000, but the price can change and dark-scene performance is a compromise. For a brighter room and better dark-scene handling, the U7SG is a step-up candidate; RTINGS reports its typical sale range as $600–$700 despite a full price above $1,000. Treat both figures as guide-reported patterns, not live quotes. Read RTINGS’ U7SG review.

Match the TV to your room
Bright rooms and reflections
Daylight, overhead lights, and windows can make a dim or reflective screen frustrating. The U7SG’s higher brightness and matte screen are useful traits to investigate for a bright room. Less expensive glossy sets may show reflections; if possible, check the screen finish and brightness for the exact model and size you plan to buy.

Local dimming can help a TV preserve darker areas while bright highlights remain visible. It is not a guarantee of perfect blacks: a halo or glow around subtitles and bright objects may still show up, as RTINGS notes for the QM6K. The QD6QF lacks local dimming, so it is a weaker fit if dark-room movie contrast is a priority.

Check gaming features and streaming apps
Gaming
Before buying, confirm the exact set’s native refresh rate, resolution at higher frame rates, variable refresh rate (VRR), and HDMI capabilities. Budget TVs can limit high-frame-rate gaming to a reduced resolution or omit more advanced gaming features. The cited guides describe differences among these models, but feature support can vary by size and model suffix; use the exact listing and model review rather than a family name alone.
Smart-TV platform
Check that the TV’s built-in interface has the apps your household uses. RTINGS’ under-$500 guide says the Vizio OS has a smaller app selection than Google TV. If an essential app is missing, that can matter more day to day than a modest picture-quality advantage.
A practical checklist before checkout
- Set a total budget and target size. At the lowest price tiers, sizes and model availability narrow; a slightly higher budget may open a larger screen or local dimming.
- Search the exact model and diagonal. Confirm the full model suffix, screen size, seller, and current price. Do not carry a price claim from one size to another.
- Prioritize your room. Favor brightness and a matte screen for a bright space; for dark-room movies, check local dimming and known glow or blooming behavior.
- Verify gaming needs. Match native refresh rate, high-frame-rate resolution, VRR, and HDMI support to your console or PC.
- Confirm apps and stock. Check the services you use and whether the exact configuration is actually available at the price that makes it a value.
Prices and rankings move quickly. RTINGS’ recommendations were updated in September 2026, and the model that fits a price tier can change as availability shifts.
